by sumaila ogbaje3 the nigerian meteorological agency nimet has predicted cloudy weather conditions with prospects of thunderstorms and rainfall activities over most parts of the country on monday1 nimets weather outlook by its central forecast office cfo on sunday predicted cloudy morning over the central states with thunderstorms in mambila plateau jalingo yola and jos1 it added that there are chances of scattered thunderstorms over most parts with day and night temperatures of 25 to 32 and 18 to 23 degrees celsius respectively1 it predicted chances of scattered thunderstorms over gombe bauchi taraba lokoja and niger later in the day with day and night temperatures of 26 to 33 and 16 to 22 degrees celsius respectively1 the agency predicted that northern states would experience partly cloudy to cloudy conditions during the forecast period with day and night temperatures of 30 to 35 and 21 to 25 degrees celsius respectively1 it also predicted that southern states would experience cloudy morning with chances of thunderstorms over calabar and eket axis1 rains accompanied by storms are likely over the inland and the coast in the afternoon and evening period with day and night temperatures of 27 to 31 and 21 to 24 degrees celsius respectively1 there are prospects of thunderstorms over the central and the inland cities with chances of rain along the coast within the next 24 hours nimet predicted. nan1

Strike: Normal activities continue at Abuja airport

by sumaila ogbaje3 according to him what the labour is fighting for is for the benefit of all workers which is why every worker must be part of this agitation. nan1 nan reports that normal flight operations are smoothly ongoing at both the arrival and departure sections of the airports1 nan also observed that all major airlines were booking and boarding passengers with airport staff fully on ground for normal services1 mr abdulahi saroke station manager for max air told nan the strike had not affected flight operations in all airports adding that he had received flights from lagos and kano and boarded passengers to those airports1 however saroke said he had heard the news that airports could be shut anytime to join the strike1 in spite of the total shutdown proposed by the organised labour unions in the ongoing nationwide strike normal activities continued on thursday at the nnamdi azikiwe international airport abuja the news agency of nigeria nan reports1 akinjole explained that the delegates conference at which a new leadership of the national union of air transpirt employees nuate would be elected had been planned before the decision by the labour unions to embark on a nationwide strike1 he said the reason why the strike had yet to be enforced at the airports was because all aviation union leaders were out of their stations1 according to him aviation unions are strongly with the nlc on the strike even though we are not on ground to enforce it today1 we are currently in asaba for nuates national delegates conference for today and tomorrow and we shall enforce the compliance in aviation sector as soon as we finish from here he said1 a staff of abuja airport who pleaded anonymity said their various unions had not mobilised them to join the strike. he said a lot of airport workers were willing to support the strike to press home the demands for a new minimum wage in the country.1 when contacted mr francis akinjole general secretary air transport senior staff association of nigeria atssan said that all aviation unions in the country were currently attending their national delegates conference at asaba delta1

WMO canvasses NiMet support for Sierra Leone

by sumaila ogbaje3 on the delegation are the director-general of sierra leone meteorological agency and mr james kinyangi chief climate and policy development fund african development bank afdb1 mr bernard gomez wmo representative for north central and west africa made the call during a technical exchange visit of sierra leone mission on weather and climate service to nimet on monday in abuja1 gomez said that wmo was aware of nigerias supportive role to the cause of meteorology globally and particularly at the regional level1 he explained that the visit was to enable the delegation to talk with nimet to see what could be done to help sierra leone to improve on its meteorological services1 according to him wmo knows that nimet is supporting sierra leone in the area of weather forecast but it still needs to do more1 those of us who fly in the sub-region know what it means for meteorological services not functioning well or not effective1 i think it is our duty to see what can be done to help strengthen a sister country in our sub-region1 and i am confident that at the end of this mission you would have collected a lot of information that would help boost your weather services1 it is a good thing for nimet and sierra leone to work together to ensure better met service delivery in the sub region1 nimet is very supportive to the coursework of meteorology globally and particularly at the regional level1 the world meteorological organisation wmo has called on the nigerian meteorological agency nimet to enhance its technical support for the sierra leonean meteorological agency to deliver efficient service1 we are here to talk with nimet to see what can be done to help this country in our sub region he said1 the director-general of nimet prof. sani mashi represented by mr mailadi yusuf director of applied meteorological services assured that the agency was ready to ensure a successful tour by the delegation1 mashi said nimet being an agency mandated with the responsibility of advising government in all areas of meteorology had always carried out its functions in a more professional and satisfactory manner1 he said that nimet products and services had always been used by professionals and policy makers to guide their decisions and support national development1 the principal product is the seasonal rainfall predictions srp which advised on the onset and cessation of rainfall in every part of the country and we just issued the 2018 edition1 i believe your visit and tour of nimet facility would help you to discover areas to improve your operations especially in hazard monitoring and early warning processes that could help mitigate effects of such occurrences1 you will therefore be guided through our facilities such as the weather forecasting studio standard observatory and ict and data management laboratory1 it is my belief that undertaking periodic review will help improve the operations of the agencies especially those that deliver essential public services he said1 the sierra leonean delegation was led by mr usman binya acting permanent secretary ministry of transport and aviation of sierra leone1 i am very happy that today we are here with the permanent secretary at the ministry of transport as well as the director general of met agency and the african development bank1
