The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra says one prospective corps member in the state has been diagnosed of possible case of COVID-19.

Mr Kehinde Aremu, Coordinator of the scheme said this on Monday during the swearing in of 800 members of 2020 Batch B stream 1A corps members at the permanent orientation camp, Umuawulu/Mbaukwu.

Aremu said the suspect had been handed over to the government through the disease management team.

He said NYSC was working with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to enable it manage the corps members as well as ensure operations of the scheme were not interrupted.

All our activities are arranged sequentially and in agreement with the Presidential Task Force (PTF) and NCDC guidelines whose officials are also resident here to administer COVID-19 test on both camp officials and corps members.

We had a single case which the state government had already taken care of through the state disease management team, he said.

The Coordinator said that the number of corps members was reduced to ensure strict compliance to the NCDC guidelines.

He said the batch would be admitted to camp in batch 200 adding that the left overs would be captured in the next batch.

We are only 800 corps members in the state, and even that number was segmented into four batches of 200.

This measure will enable us manage the crowd; this camp has the capability for 3,000 corps members but we staggered it so that each corps member is entitled to a double bunk bed, he said.

Aremu said there were enough hand wash facilities, soap, sanitizers and steady water supply.

Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, Secretary to the State Government, who represented the governor, Chief Willie Obiano, commended the corps members contributions to bridging the manpower gap in educational and health sectors of the state.

He pledged the governors commitment to continue support to the NYSC amidst COVID-19 scourge challenge. (NAN)

Nigerias delegation arrive in Freetown ahead Super Eagles 2021 AFCON Qualifying match against Sierra Leone

Nigerias delegation to Tuesdays 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Sierra Leone have arrived in Freetown.

Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), in a statement on Monday said the team arrived in the afternoon afternoon from Benin City.

He said the team had then proceeded on a 30-minute ferry ride on the Atlantic from the International Airport in Lungi to the Sierra Leonean capital.

The chartered aircraft touched down at the airport in Lungi at 12:15 p.m. local time.

Players and officials were received by the Charge dAffaires of the Nigeria High Commission, Sona Charles, the Consular, Paul Alabi, and some members of the Sierra Leone Football Association, Olajire said.

He however disclosed that there was a hiccup at the airport as Sierra Leonean immigration officials insisted that the Nigerian players and officials must undergo COVID-19 tests right at the airport.

This was even after evidence was provided by the Nigeria team that all delegation members did the tests and all returned negative just hours before boarding their flight in Benin City.

Top officials from the Nigeria High Commission and the Leader of Delegation, Ibrahim Gusau, tried to convince the Sierra Leonean immigration officials.

They tried to make them understand that the results obtained few hours earlier were sufficient for the delegation members to enter into Freetown, prosecute the match and return to Nigeria.

But this failed to sway the officials.

Further pleas to allow the players and officials leave the airport and for Sierra Leone to send medical officials to conduct the tests at the team hotel fell on deaf ears.

After the tests, the players and officials boarded the ferry and eventually arrived at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown just before 3 p.m. local time (4 p.m. in Nigeria), Olajire said.

The NFF spokesman added that team head coach Gernot Rohr and his technical team led a total of 22 players and backroom staff.

The Eagles were due to have their official training at the Siaka Stevens Stadium (venue of Tuesdays match) on Monday evening.

The delegation also included Emmanuel Ikpeme (NFF Deputy General Secretary); Bola Oyeyode (Director of Competitions); Augustine Eguavoen (Technical Director); and Olajire (Director of Media and Communications).

Others are Nasiru Jibril (Chief Technical Officer); Emmanuel Ayanbunmi (Protocol Officer); Mohammed Ameenu (SA to General Secretary) and Ayo Olu-Ibidapo (Media Officer), he said.

Olajire also disclosed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had appointed Guinean officials led by Tawel Camara Younoussa for the match.

Younoussa was appointed as Centre Referee and with his compatriots, namely Sidiki Sidibe (Assistant Referee 1), Abdoulaye Sylla (Assistant Referee 2) and Bangaly Konate (Fourth Official).

The match commissioner is Silvestre Cantussan from Guinea Bissau, he said.

Stakeholder in the oil and gas sector have stressed the need for contract transparency in the extractive industry to ensure growth and development in the country.

Some of the stakeholders spoke at a capacity building workshop on implementation of contract transparency in the extractive sector in Owerri on Monday.

Mr Nduka Ikeyi, a lead partner with Ikeyi-Shitu and company, a law firm said the opacity of contracts engagement in the sector had affected development of the country.

He said that government had engaged in various contracts in the oil and gas sector that had not translated to expected value to the growth of the nation.

He named some of the contracts to include joint venture and operational agreement,production sharing contracts, Service contracts,among others.

According to him,most of the contracts involves allocation and sharing risks which requires a lot ofmonitoring.

He said that with transparency in the contract,monitoringimplementation process and holding parties involved accountable would be easy.

Citizens needs to know what governmentis doing and also their spending in such contracts to ensure value for the money,

Government needs to be transparentenough by making the contract portal accessible to ordinary people to understandthe terms and conditions of the contract, he said.

Mrs Charity Odili, the immediate past PresidentNational Council of Women Society said that contracttransparencywas key to development of oil host communities in the country.

She said that the need forcontract transparency in the extractive industry cannot be over emphasised.

Most host communities do not know what is happening,most of the contracts are done in secrecy and memorandum of understanding are not signed by the communities.

In my community Ndukwa in Delta, the local governmentis complaining that most international oil companies operating are no longer paying tenements rate, royalties as required, she said.

She said that it was unfortunatethat the communities was up to date still suffer the hazzards associated with exploration in the area. (NAN)

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Timipre Sylva, says Federal Governments earnings, from oil and non-oil sectors coupled with low revenue receipts from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), have dropped by 60 per cent, putting the nations economy under serious pressure.

Sylva stated this after a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja, on Monday.

He particularly noted that the revenue being generated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) had also reduced drastically due to the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The minister, who spoke to State House correspondents after his routine briefing of the president, acknowledged that the current socio-economic challenges had made life more difficult for Nigerians, while appealing for more understanding as government was determined to uplift the quality of life of the people.

The minister also assured that Nigerians would get used to the recent deregulation of the pump price of PMS, just as they did with kerosene and diesel which are more important to the ordinary citizens than petrol, that is mostly used by the elite.

According to him, trucks that move food items from one part of the country to another use diesel, while kerosene also used by most of the Nigerian masses, has since been deregulated.

The only explanation to everything we have said is that the country just could not afford subsidy anymore. It is unfortunate we are experiencing some of these things now. We will get by, I am sure when things stabilize, our earnings begin to improve, we will begin to see the benefits of what this government has done, he said.

On the sudden increase in the price of petrol, he said: Let us first agree, that these are not the best of times not only for Nigeria but for the global community.

What we have said over and over again as a government is that government is no longer in the business of fixing pump price, that is the meaning of deregulation and stepping back on subsidy.

Yes, we are very aware that this will result to some increase, but why do we have to do this, because it is clearly impossible for government to continue to subsidize, the minister further said.

He added: I was just discussing with someone today that we just have to make a choice. If government were to continue with subsidy, it means, for example, that at some point we may not even have money, after subsidizing petrol, to pay salaries. You have to choose. It is very clear that today things are not as they were before.

Sylva reiterated that the governments earnings have reduced by 60 percent, our FIRS collection has also reduced because less oil is being produced, there is less activity in the oil industry which is driving the economy. So you find out it is a double whammy from all sides.

Elias Mbam,

Chief Elias Mbam, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi, has urged Gov. Dave Umahi to move ahead with his plans to defect to the APC.

Mbam, also Chairman, Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), said this while speaking with newsmen on Monday in Abakaliki.

He was reacting to a meeting held between the governor and some APC stakeholders on Sunday, in Uburu, in Ohaozara Local Government Area (LGA) of the state preparatory to his defection to the party.

Mbam said that the decision was a welcome development saying that the state, as well as the South East would benefit from the defection.

He said that the South East had nothing to show for its numerous support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since the return to civil rule in 1999.

Mbam said that the APC-led Federal Government has shown commitment towards developing infrastructure in the South-East, adding that it was time politicians in the zone moved to APC en-masse.

The major stakeholders in our party met with the governor and he told us why he wanted to leave his party for the APC; part of the reasons was the need for South East to be part of the government at the centre.

He stressed the need for the zone to collaborate with the North and that if we do that; we will be able to get what we have not been able to get since 1999.

Since 1999, PDP has been in control in Ebonyi and other states in South East, yet the party has not found one person worthy of flying its flag and we dont even have any hope that it would happen soon, Mbam said.

He said that the APC led federal government does bot accord much recognition to the South East, hence the need for the zone to join the ruling party in order to become relevant to the government.

He said that Ebonyi needed to join the ruling party in order to be present where major decisions were being taken.

We want to lead a campaign where the South East will become more relevant at the centre; Umahis move is a commendable decision, its good for our state and Igbo people.

The best way to be represented in a meeting is to be present where major decisions are taken and if Ebonyi is not present at the centre, certainly it will affect what we get from there, he said.

The RMAFC chairman said that Umahis defection to APC would further strengthen the unity of the party in the state and reposition it towards capturing the governors seat in 2023. (NAN)

Rivers United Football Club on Sunday defeated Bayelsa United FC 6-5 after penalty kicks to win the Gov. Nyesom Wike Pre-Season Football Tournament in Port Harcourt.

The encounter which was played at the Sharks FC stadium ended 1-1 after regulation time before the Port Harcourt-based Rivers United won 5-4 in the deciding penalty kicks shootout.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, Wike, represented by Desmond Akawor, Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, said the standard of play during the tournament was satisfactory.

I can say that the standard of play was high and officiating very good. I congratulate the Ministry of Sports for the success in organising the competition, he said.

Rivers Commissioner for Sports, Boma Iyaye, on his part commended Wike for his support for sports in the state

I thank Gov. Wike for his support for sports in Rivers. God has used him to ensure the state succeeds in sports, he said.

Iyaye urged Rivers United players and officials to work hard so as to succeed in their upcoming continental competition matches.

You have a lot to do when playing on the continent, if you really want to make impact, the Commissioner said.

He thanked clubs which were in Port Harcourt for the competition for participating in the tournament.

The competition was not about the winners but an opportunity for clubs to assess themselves and appreciate their weaknesses, added.

Hadi Sirika-led Rubicon overpowered Lintex 9 goals to 6 and a half to emerge winners of the Presidents Cup at the Nigeria National Carnival Polo tournament on Sunday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rubicon came into the final game with six points, having won all their previous matches and only needed to avoid defeat to become champions.

Lintex on their part, had three points and needed a win in their final game to stand a chance of snatching the tournaments highest prize.

The quartet of Lintex included the Dantata brothers; Sadiq ( 1), Abba ( 2) and Bashir ( 3) combined with Chis Mckenzie, a 7-goaler from South Africa for a total team handicap of 13.

Rubicon, the current champions of the Georgian Cup, had a total team handicap of 15 with the likes of the Badamasi brothers; Abdulmalik and Idris combining well with Jamilu Mohammed and their teammate from Argentina, Gonzalo Bourdieu, a 6-goaler.

Two and half a goal was awarded to Lintex to even the goal difference between the teams before the start of the game.

Rubicon had the advantage of the best and fastest ponnies in its arsenal.

However, it was Lintex who drew the first blood through Mckenzie who also went ahead to grab his brace for a 4 and a half to 0 goal at the end of first chukka.

Rubicon came alive in the second chukka and scored four unreplied goals to cut Lintexs lead to half for a 4 and a half to 4 scoreline.

From then on, it was Rubicon all the way as the teams experience and quality began to show and the champions added five more unreplied goals for a 9 to 4 goals scoreline.

Lintex, however, mounted a late comeback but could only manage to score two more goals in the fifth and final chukka to make it 9 goals to 6 goals at the end of the gruelling encounter.

Malcomines of Jos finished with six points after defeating Keffi Ponnies 8-6 to settle for the runners up position.

In the Legislative Shield, Fas Agro edged Casiva by 7 and a half goals to 7 to emerge winners, while Casiva finished as runners up

Rubicon 2 thrashed Golden Alchemy by 5 goals to 2 and a half to emerge winners of the FCT Ministers Cup.

Also, the Guards Challenge saw Dee-bee Farms edge Dokaji Farms by 5-4 to emerge winners.

The tournament which was in its 11th edition began on Monday and came to an end on Sunday.

COVID-19 updates by NCDC

Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 152 new infections of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country.

The NCDC made this known via its verified website on Sunday.

The centre noted that the country had so far tested 705,809 persons since the first confirmed case relating to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced on Feb. 27, 2020.

The public health agency said that the new infections brings the countrys total number of infections to 65,148.

It added that the new infections were reported from seven states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with no Coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours in the country.

It stated that 44 new patients were successfully treated and discharged, taking total number of people discharged to 61,073 in the country.

It stated that it had activated a multi-sectoral national Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at Level III to coordinate the national response activities in the country.

The health agency said the 152 cases were from Lagos-136, Kano-4, Niger-3, Ekiti-2, Kaduna-2, Ogun-2, Taraba-2, and FCT-1.

The NCDC stated that till date, 65,148 cases have been confirmed, 61,073 patients discharged and 1,163 deaths recorded in 36 states and the FCT.

It, however, disclosed that there were 2,912 active cases across the country.

The agency, therefore, advised Nigerians to continue to observe the COVID-19 protocols to stay safe, stressing that the Coronavirus pandemic was not over yet.

Wear a face mask properly; avoid large gatherings, maintain physical distance from others.

The PHCs are to provide medical care, maternal-child health including family planning, safe water supply and basic sanitation, prevent and control locally endemic diseases, collect and report vital statistics and education about health.

PHCs are also for national health programmes, as well as for referral services.

Given the enormity of the roles of PHCs, the absence of it or its malfunction will greatly affect healthcare delivery in the country.

A check by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), therefore, seeks to find out the state of the centres across the country, and their functionality toward improving the health status of citizens, especially at the grassroots.

He told NAN that equipment and staff were increased to ensure effective health delivery at the grassroots.

Hamza-Ikara added that the agency had trained over 8,000 community health volunteers and conducted adequate mobilisation to encourage patronage of the facilities.

At Kalambaina area, one of the residents, Danladi Kaka, told NAN that the PHC there is more like a General Hospital, as the staff work 24 hours daily.

At Dange PHC, one Alhaji Danazumi Saraki, said people of the area are being taken care of at the facility, and referred to general hospital when absolutely necessary.

Meanwhile, Kebbi Government in collaboration with some partners, is renovating and equipping 225 PHCs to enhance access to healthcare services at the grassroots.

The scheme was launched in October 2017 and is still functional, the governors aide said.

Also, the Executive Secretary, Kebbi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Abubakar Kaoje, said the state government is taking measures to bring healthcare under one roof to ensure proper coordination by pooling money from local governments to support PHCs.

He also said that the state government rolled out the State Emergency Maternal and Child Health Coordination Centre, and renovated PHCs.

Kaoje explained that about 76 centres had so far been renovated out of the 225 PHCs in the state.

The state Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Jafar Mohammad, said the government would soon accredit 86 primary and 12 secondary healthcare facilities for the state contributory healthcare scheme.

At Takalau PHC in Birnin Kebbi, one of the renovated primary health centres, a Community Health Extension Worker, Rukayya Shehu, informed NAN that the 15-bed centre attend to at least 20 pregnant women daily for Antenatal Care (ANC) and five for Post Natal care.

Actually, the patronage is good here, women come for ANC, delivery and even post natal because they believe that here we have skilled health providers.

We conduct ANC on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, featuring health talk on ANC, exclusive breastfeeding, nutrition, child-spacing and HIV/AIDS counselling, she said.

She, however, said that the centre lacked fencing, adequate drugs and beds, as well as cold store, furniture and other facilities like blood pressure apparatus.

Zainab Faruk, a 25- year-old mother who attends the health facility for post natal, said she had her baby at home, but had to go to hospital after the child developed some complications.

NAN reports that although the state of many Primary Healthcare centres in Kano had improved, not many residents patronise them.

In Zamfara, the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Yahaya Kanoma said the state government will soon establish functional and modern PHCs in each of the 147 wards of the state.

As I am speaking now, many have been completed and equipped with modern health care facilities.

He described the situation as unfortunate, while rating the health care services of the posts and clinics as poor.

He told NAN that primary healthcare centres are the facilities that should provide basic health services at the community level, but Plateau does not have any.

COVID-19

After several months without any locally acquired coronavirus case, South Australia on Monday recorded a significant spike in new infections, breaking the countrys successful streak of community containment.

The state of around 1.7 million people recorded 14 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, up from just three the day before.

The cluster is thought to have spread from a hotel quarantine worker who passed the virus on to family members in the states capital Adelaide, according to health officials.

It is a very dangerous situation that were in here in South Australia at the moment, and its really going to require the cooperation of every single citizen for us to get on top of this,state premier Steven Marshall told local radio 5AAon Monday.

In response, all of Australias other states and the Northern Territory apart from the most populous state of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, home to Canberra, have re-introduced travel restrictions on South Australia, declaring it a coronavirus hotspot.

Local media reported passengers arriving from South Australia being in tears when told they would have to go into 14-day quarantine when touching down in Western Australia Monday morning.

Last week, Australia recorded three consecutive days of zero new locally acquired infections across the country, at a time when cases soared across Europe and the United States.

The nation of around 25 million people has recorded just over 27,700 coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic significantly fewer per capita than most developed countries.

The country has taken a lockdown approach, alongside rigorous testing and tracing to contain the virus.(dpa/NAN)

A girl being defiled

Mrs Bunmi Okesola, a volunteer with Sexual Assaults and Awareness Response Initiative (SOAR) on Monday said conspiracy of silence was the greatest barrier to ending Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) in Nigeria.

A conspiracy of silence or culture of silence describes the behaviour of a group of people by unspoken consensus will not mention, discuss or acknowledge a given subject.

Okesola, a child advocate told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that empowerment of parents and caregivers to give sex education to their children was paramount in reducing conspiracy of silence.

We need to educate parents on the importance of giving their children sex education for them to know the boundaries.

And this has to start early as soon as the child starts to talk; you let her or him know that not all people are his or her uncles, how not to sit on uncles legs etc, she said.

She said that many children had been permanently traumatised due to the silence of their caregivers or parents.

Some parents think that keeping silence is a way of protecting their children from stigma.

I know of a mother in a community who reported to us the rape of her daughter by a barber, and we wanted to take it to another level.

When we reported to the police, the woman withdrew by not picking our calls and finally asking us to leave the case for God to judge.

Okesola, who urged parents to expose the crime, said that bringing the crime and perpetrators to public glare was key to ending the crime.

The child advocate, who urged parents not to discard evidences of assaults in a bid to protect their children, called for Sexual Assault Referral Centres.

Caregivers or parents should stop discarding evidences like washing the blood stained pants because such evidences are required for prosecution.

Okesola said that such centres were necessary for the victims to make complaints and to rehabilitate victims and prosecution of offenders.

She assured that the referral centres would give succour and care to the victims of sexual assault and protection to their parents.

She also blamed the police and the slow judicial process as factors responsible for increasing the crime.

On many occasions, the police will dismiss the case in a hurry without further investigation or prosecution.

The police are not doing well in that regard, when you report the matter to them either they demand for transport fee or testing fees before investigation and prosecution, she said.

The child advocate decried the delay in the countrys judicial process as another reason to fight against gender based violence.

I remember taking a case to court but up till now, the matter is still not decided and this is a problem.

Okesola however urged all respondents to concertedly break the barrier of silence, saying it was instrumental to the lingering sexual and gender based violence.

A woman I remember reported her husband to us for abusing his step daughter in the first place and his own daughter secondly.

As soon as we wanted to take up the matter, the woman withdrew with a flimsy excuse that if we jail the husband, who will take care of her.

She reiterated the call for sexual assault referral centres, saying it was imperative for care and protection of victims. (NAN)

The Kaduna State Government says troops on internal security operations have rescued nine persons kidnapped along Kaduna-Abuja highway on Sunday afternoon.

The states Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan said this in a statement on Monday in Kaduna.

Aruwan said that the government received operational feedback that the victims were rescued by troops of Operation Thunder Strike (OPTS).

He explained that the troops on routine patrol along Akilubu-Gidan Busa axis of the Kaduna-Abuja road, received a distress call around 4 p.m., indicating that bandits had blocked the highway.

The bandits opened fire on a bus, forcing the driver to halt.

On getting to the location, they realised that bandits had already kidnapped nine persons from an 18-seater bus with registration No. Kaduna: MKA-151, he said.

According to him, the troops immediately mobilised and engaged the bandits in a firefight and in the process rescued the nine persons.

Regrettably, the driver and a passenger seated close to him lost their lives.

The Kaduna state government wishes to send its condolence to their families and pray for God to grant them eternal rest, he said.

He said the government will continue to work hard, in collaboration with the Federal Government to improve the security situation on the highway.

Aruwan said that the government was also working in collaboration with Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Sokoto and Kano State government, as well as the military, the police, Department of State Service and relevant stakeholders towards enhancing security in the region. (NAN)

The Ondo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has mourned one of its leaders, Dr Kingsley Shaba, who died on Sunday evening.

Mr Ade Adetimehin, the State Chairman of APC, made this known in Akure on Monday in a statement issued by Mr Alex Kalejaye, the State Publicity Secretary of the party.

Adetimehin described the demise of Shaba as a shock to party members.

Shaba, who was a member of the committee that worked out the blueprint for the current administration in the state, hailed from Isua in Akoko South East Local Government Area of the state.

He was a leading figure in the State Elders Forum of APC.

Adetimehin described the death of Shaba as an irreparable loss to APC family in the state.

He noted that the contributions of the deceased to the development and success of the party in the state were enormous.

He explained that Shabas demise would deny the entire APC family and the statethe services of a selfless illustrious son and a consistent promoter of peace and development.

Dr K. B. Shaba was a man of integrity and exceptionally hardworking. He was a very committed and dependable political ally.

The state chapter of APC equally recalls visiting the intelligent administrator in his house recently, when he spoke passionately about the gains of good governance and buoyant economy to the citizens, he said.

Adetimehin condoled with the immediate family of the deceased, the people of Akoko South East and the Anglican Community and prayed that God would grant the departed eternal rest. (NAN)

The Defence Headquarters says troops of Operation Accord have arrested 10 bandits with 88 rustled livestock, neutralised two and rescued kidnapped victims in recent encounters in Katsina and Zamfara States.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, in a statement on Monday in Abuja, added that the troops also recovered three AK47 rifles during the operations.

Enenche explained that the troops had on Nov. 15, engaged a group of bandits in firefight during a night patrol at Yar Tasha village in Katsina State, killing three while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot wounds.

He stated that the arrested suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence on their movements with rustled livestock along Katsina-Jibia road.

Upon interrogation, the suspects claimed that they migrated from Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State to Niger Republic, he said.

The suspects were arrested with 88 cows and an unconfirmed number of sheep and are currently in custody undergoing further investigation.

Similarly, troops deployed at Ungwan Doka on Nov. 15 rescued one Adamu Yahaya, who was earlier kidnapped at Unguwar Saida village in Faskari Local Government Area.

Currently, the gallant troops have continued to dominate the general area with patrols to provide security for locals and deny bandits freedom of action.

The Military High Command commends the gallant troops for their professionalism and encourages them to intensify the onslaught against criminal elements in the country, he said. (NAN)

NDLEA personnel on duty

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo Command, has appealed to the Edo Government to urgently assist the command with an operational base to enable the agency continue its operations in the state.

Mr Buba Wakawa, State Commander of the agency, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Monday.

Wakawa said the appeal had become imperative as the activities of the agency had been stalled, following recent destruction and burning down of the command headquarters by hoodlums who had hijacked the #EndSARS protest in the state.

NAN reports that on Oct. 21, 2020, the command headquarters was set ablaze by suspected hoodlums.

Wakawa had confirmed the development, claiming that some suspects who are awaiting trial were set free by the hoodlums, who he noted destroyed and set ablaze exhibits including vehicles in the premises.

The commander, therefore, said there was an urgent need for an equipped operational base as well as operational vehicles to get back to work.

We need to immediately commence operation to take away drugs from illicit circulation. We need to reduce the crime rate and improve the level of security.

Operational activities of the command have been grounded as we presently have no operational base, we lost vital documents.

Counseling and rehabilitation of clients stopped and we have observed a rise in sales and use of drugs and increase in crime and violence, Wakawa said.

He noted that the current situation in Upper Sakponba axis of the state capital, where the agencys command headquarters was located, had become known for illegal drug sales and open abuse.

Recent activities have clearly shown that drugs are catalyst of crime.

However, what is important now is how to restore peace and orderliness back to the community.

The priority is to get an operational base for the NDLEA to immediately commence work.

Expectations of members of the public are high but prominent among them is the security of lives and property, Wakawa said. (NAN)

The Patrons Association of Imo Oil Producing Communities (PIOPC) has urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to intervene in the arrest and detention of a state lawmaker, Heclus Okoro.

Its chairman, Chief David Mbachu, made the call in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday in which he said the release of the lawmaker was necessary to avert a breakdown of law and order.

Okoro,(APC, Ohaji/Egbema) was originally elected on the platform of Action Alliance (AA) before defecting to the APC in the House.

The police arrested and detained the lawmaker last Friday following a fracas that broke out between him and his colleagues at the Government House, Owerri.

ThePIOPC also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the police on Monday demanding Okoros immediate release.

Mbachu said that oil producing communities in the state would use all legal means to secure the release of Okoro, whom, he said was being victimised for siding with the impeached Speaker of the House.

In a statement she issued last Saturday, Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Hope Uzodinma on New and Electronic Media, Mrs Nneamaka Okafor,confirmed Okoros arrest for fighting inside the premises of Government House.

She alleged thatOkorowas in the Government House to fight when his colleagues were presenting the new Speaker tothe governor, a claim which was refuted by the PIOPC chairman.

The PIOPC chairman said Okoro was invited to the Government House by his colleaguesand upon arrival, was descended upon and beaten up.

Mbachu argued that if it was true that Okoro was at the Government House of fight, those with whom he fought ought to have been arrested also. (NAN)

Borno Government has called for partnership with traditional rulers on the implementation of the states recently launched 25-year Development Plan and 10-year Strategic Transformation Plan.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, Alhaji Sugun Mai-Mele made the call at a meeting with traditional rulers on Monday in Maiduguri.

Mai-Mele said as custodians of the peoples culture and traditions and being closer to the grassroots, the traditional rulers have key role to play in social re-orientation which is key to the successful implementation of the plan.

He lauded the traditional institution in the state for its sustained support to the implementation of laudable government policies and programmes and urged it to sustain the tempo, particularly at this critical time of the state governments commitment to restore the honour, dignity, and prosperity of the state, after a decade of insurgency.

Also speaking at the meeting, the special Adviser to the Borno State Governor on Sustainable Development, Dr Mairo Mandara, emphasised the role of the girl-child in facilitating development and the need to improve enrolment in schools.

In his remarks, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar-Garbai, assured the government of the traditional institutions commitment in facilitating the implementation of the development plan.

He, however, called for more funding of the institution for optimal performance.

Adamawas Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri said in Yola on Monday that special security arrangements had been made for the protection of NYSC members posted to the state.

Inaugurating the 2020 Batch B stream 1A Orientation Programme for the corps members, Gov. Fintiri, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Maxwell Gidado, urged the corps members to also be security conscious.

As the Chief Security Officer of the state, I assure you that you will only be posted to where we are sure of your safety.

However, it is pertinent to remind you that you are your own number one security officer; so, always be security conscious, he said.

The governor also promised to improve facilities in the camp to make it conducive, secure and convenient for corps members.

Malam Ibrahim Tukur, the NYSC Coordinator in Adamawa, said all the corps members, camp officials and other inhabitants of the camp had undergone COVID-19 tests before entry.

Tukur commended the governor for his passion and love for corps members, and said the governor recently provided an ambulance, 1,000 mattresses and pillows and some equipment at the camp clinic.

A Gombe-based non-governmental organisation, Jewel Environmental Initiative (JEI) has cautioned residents of the state against bush burning, especially in the rural communities.

Mr. Ismail Bima, JEI Chief Executive Officer, gave the advice on Monday in Gombe in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

According to him, the advice has become imperative in view of the commencement of dry season farming which often records a surge in bush burning.

Bima said that the negative impact of bush burning on the environment had made it extremely difficult for environmentalists to keep silent on activities that could contribute to global warming.

We have always campaigned against bush burning because of its negative impact on the environment and humans. Burning bushes involve the production of air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and pollutants such as fume and smoke, he said.

The environmentalist said his NGO had started the sensitisation of farmers in villages where bush burning was very rampant.

Our message is simple, do not burn bushes. We tell them the impact of such action on their farmlands, health and environment. The dry season is not a time to burn bushes, he said.

Bima said the group has visited villages around Gwani and Bima hills to sensitise the farmers and also to some villages in Yamaltu-Deba Local Government and parts of Akko and Dukku Local Government Areas.

According to Bima, bush burning has negative effects on the quality of the soil as it takes time to recover from the effects of burning.

He decried the activities of those burning tyres in abattoirs, pointing out that a report on it would soon be submitted to the Ministry of Environment.

He commended the state government for taking proactive measures to sustain the Gombe Goes Green initiative, adding that plants needed more water and care during the dry season.

Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has made provision for the supply of water to sustain the trees already planted, especially with the commencement of the dry season while sustaining planting, especially in schools, he said.(NAN)
