A member of All Progressives Congress (APC), National Committee on Ondo Governorship Election, Mr Osita Okechukwu, has dismissed fears that the APC may lose the Oct.10 election in the state.

Okechukwu, who spoke to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, said that he was optimistic that Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu would win the polls.

I dont harbour any fears of APC losing Ondo election; for Akeredolu and governor-elect of Edo, Godwin Obaseki, share a lot in common. One harbours no fears, he said.

He listed those qualities in the duo to include: One, they devoted much more resources in the past four years to physical infrastructural development than stomach infrastructure.

This is why some elites are antagonistic to both.

Secondly, both diligently reconciled with their fellow gubernatorial aspirants within their parties thus going into the election with the spirit of internal democracy advantage.

Thirdly, they both defeated same candidates in 2016 and one does not see the danger naysayers are hyping.

Fourthly, dont forget that they are products of our great party, APC.

Okechukwu, however, said that President Muhammadu Buhari had vowed to uphold the best tenets of free and fair election as the bedrock of democracy, making the use of the proverbial federal might a mirage.

This is a good omen for Nigerian democracy.

Yes the Presidents position of non-interference and creation of level playing field is a good omen to our fledgling democracy.

It is also in no manner particular hindrance to Akeredolus chances of winning the election, he said.(NAN)

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) key market indicators on Wednesday sustained positive rally, appreciating by 0.50 per cent due to monetary policy rate cut to 11.5 per cent.

Speficially, the market capitalisation rose by N67 billion to close at N13.474 trillion against N13.407 trillion recorded on Tuesday.

Also, the NSE All-Share Index inched higher by 128.12 points or 0.50 per cent to close at 25,783.02 from 25,654.90 achieved on Tuesday.

The performance was supported by bargain buying in MTN Nigeria Communications, Nigerian Breweries, Seplat, Mobil and Flour Mills.

Consequently, the month-to-date gain increased to 1.8 per cent while the year-to-date loss moderated to -4.0 per cent.

Analysts at Cordros Capital Ltd had predicted that the fixed income market would see a downward adjustment in yields, thereby making the equities market more attractive.

Market sentiment closed positive with 21 gainers in contrast with 14 losers.

International Breweries and Prestige Assurance dominated the gainers chart in percentage terms, rising by 10 per cent each to close at N3.60 and 60k per share, respectively.

UACN Property grew by 5.26 per cent to close at N1, while Seplat appreciated by 3.90 per cent to close at N400 per share.

Conversely, Associated Bus Company led the laggards chart in percentage terms, dropping 9.09 per cent to close at 30k per share.

Royal Exchange trailed with a loss of 6.90 per cent to close at 27k, while Eterna lost 6.72 per cent to close at N2.50 per share.

NPF Micro Finance Bank shed 6.15 per cent to close at N1.22, while AIICO Insurance depreciated by 3.37 per cent to close at 86k per share.

Transactions in the shares of Sterling Bank topped the activity chart with 85.21 million shares valued at N97.99 million.

FBN Holdings sold 82.74 million shares worth N413.70 million, while Access Bank exchanged 58.21 million shares valued at N366.71 million.

Zenith Bank traded 28.45 million shares worth N480.21 million, while MTNN accounted for 25.72 million shares valued at N3.13 billion.

In all, the volume of shares traded increased by 58.05 per cent as investors bought and sold 414.16 million shares worth N6.28 billion in 3,793 deals.

This was in contrast with 262.05 million shares valued at N4.39 billion achieved in 3,254 deals on Tuesday. (NAN)

The Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers and Advocates (COPA), a Human Rights, pro- democracy and good governance group has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing into law the Nigeria Police Act, 2020.

The coalition in a statement by its convener Mr Pelumi Olajengbesi on Wednesday in Abuja applauded the president saying the signing was timeous.

It would be recalled that President Buhari on Sept. 17 signed the police bill into law to enhance professionalism in their administration and regulation in the country.

The new law among other things provides for a more effective and well organised police force driven by the principles of transparency and accountability in its operations and management of its resources.

It also enables and establishes an appropriate funding framework for the Police in line with what is obtainable in other Federal Government key institutions to ensure appropriate funding for all Police formations.

Olajengbesi said that the police were at the heart of a seamless functioning of any political entity given its strategic role in the maintenance of law and order and as such must be preserved.

He noted that inadequate funding, lack of manpower, poor training and expertise in the police had continually been felt by Nigerians who had to bear the brunt of abuse of human rights, and so on.

It remains puzzling that an agency as strategic as such has been allowed to labour for too long under the limitations of an anachronistic legislation that among other things did not reflect the reality of evolution over the years.

We therefore commend all civil society organisations and individuals who have tirelessly sustained the clamour for a review of the enabling law governing the Nigeria Police.

We particularly commend Mr Segun Awosanya, (Segalink) for his selfless role in advocating for the reforms which have so prominently featured in the new law, he added.

He also commended the 9th National Assembly for midwifing a forward thinking legislation, while calling on the leadership of the Nigeria Police to ensure that the law yielded the desired result.

We urge the Inspector-General of Police to set proper tone for this new beginning by ensuring that utmost compliance and application is given to the law. (NAN)

The Central Naval Command (CNC), Yenagoa, on Wednesday inaugurated a Sea Exercise code-named EXERCISE AKERE, which is the Ijaw word for arrest or catch.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise which started in the Central Naval Command Area of Responsibility (AOR) will run from Sept. 23, 2020 to Sept.25, 2020.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of CNC, Rear Adm. Suleiman Garba, speaking at the event said that the aim of the exercise is to enforce the use of Automatic Identification System (AIS) by vessels operating in the Commands AOR.

Garba said that the Commands AOR covers one of the major coastal regions of the country which accommodates the bulk of the nations economic assets including oil exploration infrastructure.

According to him, It is therefore part of the CNCs responsibilities to protect these assets and ensure that the nations maritime economic activities are not disrupted.

There are internationally accepted rules guiding vessels operating in the maritime environment to ensure that they are positively identified.

Such rules include: flying visible flags and switching on of the AIS.

He said that the command had observed lately that some vessels operating within its maritime environment were in the habit of switching off their AIS.

He said that such an action used to impede the identifications of such vessels, thus interfering in the nations maritime awareness infrastructure from monitoring or tracking such vessels activities.

He said, This non-observance of the commands rules can be adduced to criminal intent by them so that their nefarious activities will not be detected.

Furthermore, the act of inappropriately switching off AIS can prevent the Nigerian Navy from determining vessels that are genuinely in distress probably due to either piracy or sea robbery attack and deserve rescue.

This act is considered to be a grave infraction of maritime security as it contravenes the rules governing the use and purpose of AIS and the general safety of other seafarers.

The FOC said that the act of deliberately switching off AIS for illegal activities had led to economic losses and sabotaging the nations economic growth and prosperity.

He said that with the approval of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the Fleet would fine-tune its process of enforcing the use of AIS and reduce infractions to the lowest possible level.

It is, therefore, the directive of the CNS to use this enforcement processes to help minimise economic sabotage in the nations maritime environment through enhanced patrol and operations.

He also said that Operations CALM WATERS II and SWIFT RESPONSE were still ongoing .

The FOC said that through them, other security agencies within the Commands maritime boundary are making efforts to rid the country of numerous security challenges being encountered.

Despite the increased presence of the Navy in the countrys maritime domain which had led to numerous arrests of culprits, the violation of switching off AIS has persisted.

This is considered as a leading cause of increase in maritime crimes such as: illegal fishing, poaching, sea pirates/robbery, kidnapping, arms smuggling and trafficking, illegal oil bunkering and anti-economic activities.

Garba added that EXERCISE AKERE was inaugurated to complement and consolidate on the achievements recorded so far by the ongoing operations.

We are deploying eight ships and a helicopter to carry out intensive patrols of the waterways and sea lanes.

This is to ensure strict compliance to the use of AIS by vessels in our maritime environment and prevent other maritime crimes for sustainable economic activities to thrive.

The ships will conduct Vessels Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) on all suspected vessels as well as arrest defaulters.

The exercise will also afford the fleet the opportunity to practise other evolutions such as: ship manoeuvres, emergency drills, communication exercises and gunnery firing , the FOC said. (NAN)

A High Court in Gusau on Wednesday dismissed a suit filed by local government council Chairmen challenging their dissolution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that thecouncil Chairmen were dissolved by the state government on June 4, 2020.

They filed the suit challenging that as duly elected officials, their tenure had not expired.

Those council chairmen that filed the case challenging their removal include Bakura Local Government, Alhaji Dandare Dakko, Gummi Local Government, Alhaji Sanusi Sarkin-Aski, Shinkafi Local Government Alhaji Sani Galadi, Gusau Local

Delivering judgment, Justice Bello Shinkafi, held:one does not need magnifying glasses to understand the multiplicity of action in the various suits filed at different courts of the same jurisdiction.

Filingtwo cases of the same fact at the court of the same jurisdiction was an abuse of court process, therefore dismissed the case.

Filing multiple suits is a violation of court proceedings as such, the case is hereby dismissed.

He held that the court will not rely on speculation to make a judgment, stressed that after both plaintiffs and defendants were heard, and argued extensively, based on relevant sections of the law, he dismissed the suit filed by plaintiff.

Reacting to the judgment, the counsel to the defendants and the Director of Litigation, Zamfara Ministry of Justice, Surajo Abdullahi described the ruling as a victory to the rule of law.

He said the judgment will serve as a deterrent to counsel to avoid entering same suits in different courts at same time.

In his reaction the counsel to the plaintiffs, Mr Surajo Garba, said he was satisfied with the decision of the court. (NAN)

President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the death of 23 people, as confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Commission, represents another disturbing and saddening incident in the litany of tragedies that have befallen our country.

The president made his feelings known in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Wednesday.

The presidential aide quoted Buhari as reacting to the petroleum tanker explosion earlier on Wednesday in Lokoja, the Kogi State Capital, which claimed the lives of travellers, school children, bystanders, including some students of Kogi State Polytechnic.

Buhari said he was seriously worried about the frequency of these unfortunate and large scale tragedies in the country which cause needless deaths.

These frequent incidents that result in loss of lives and property are national scandal caused by our indifference to safety standards.

Many accidents are preventable if proper proactive and precautionary measures are put in place or properly observed as routine policies.

Ours is a country where we move on whenever tragedies occur instead of taking preventive safety measures to forestall future calamities.

However, refusal to do the right thing can cause potential tragic problems that harm innocent people, he said.

The president, therefore, called on the countys transport authorities, traffic and road management agencies as well as law enforcement officials to sit up and enforce safety standards with more seriousness.

According to him, Nigeria is not having a shortage of laws and regulations, but the nations problem is lack of zeal to enforce those laws and regulations for the sake of public safety.

He condoled with Kogi State government and the families of the victims of the tragedy.

The people of Itele community in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun on Wednesday besieged the Governors Office in Abeokuta, demanding the appointment and installation of a new traditional ruler in the town.

The residents, led in protest by their Baales (village heads) and other community leaders, said that the absence of a monarch for nearly two decades had impacted negatively on the development of the community.

According to the protesters, the ancient town has been without a monarch after the late traditional ruler passed on over 15 years ago.

Some of the inscriptions on their placards are: Itele people are peace loving; No Ademola, No King and A town without a king is a ghost town.

Others are, Itele people deserve a king and Please, approve our king as nominated by all the kingmakers and family.

Speaking on behalf of the community, one of the Baales in Itele-Ota, Chief Oluyemi Onifade, told newsmen that the kingmakers recently elected Prince Ademola Asorota as the new king.

He, however, said that government had been foot dragging on his ratification and subsequent installation.

He alleged that some groups of land grabbers, allegedly positioning one of them as the new king, had plotted to thwart the process.

Onifade urged the government to speed up the process, warning that any manipulation against the peoples wish would plunge the town into crisis.

Ademola Asorota is an indigene of Itele from Iliwo in Itele. He is never an outsider. He is never an outcast.

What we are asking the government to do is to hasten the process.

Already, the process is ongoing, but please, let us fasten the process so that we can have an Oba in Itele; because it has drawn the town backward to the extent that no meaningful development is taking place in Itele.

We dont want chaos; we dont want crisis in Itele, he submitted.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protesters were addressed on behalf of the state government by Adesoji Adewuyi, Director of Chieftaincy Affairs at the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

He admitted that the selection process, which had started on Itele stool, had been stalled by a litigation.

According to Adewuyi, the ministry has transferred the matter to the Ministry of Justice for a legal advice before the government can take a final decision.

He, however, assured the protesters of governments transparent process to avoid crisis in the community.

The United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) says it is working hard with the Federal Government toward ensuring safe school reopening considering the importance of health to societal development.

Mrs. Azuka Menkiti, Education Specialist, UNICEF, Abuja made this known on Wednesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during aZonal Stakeholders Dialogue School Re-Opening Readiness in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.

NAN reports that theZonal Stakeholders Dialogue School Re-Opening Readiness was organized by the Federal Government in collaboration with UNICEF.

Menkiti said that UNICEF has developed a template to ensure safe school resumption while soliciting for traditional rulers and relevant stakeholders support in ensuring that the environment is safe for students and teachers.

We have organised a similar meetingon Monday for policy makers made up of state commissioners in order to ensure safe school reopening.

And today, we are organising this stakeholders dialogue for traditional rulers, SBMC, PTA, NAPPS among others on safe school reopening in order to ensure safety of our children and teachers.

UNICEF and Federal Government are committed and working hard in order to ensuring safe school reopening, hence the need for this stakeholer dialogue, she said.

The UNICEF official said that the meeting was aimed at sharing and reviewing school reopening readiness template and to get the views of stakeholders and their support towards school reopening.

We are here specifically to share and review the draft school reopening readiness template as adapted from the school reopening guidelines.

To agree on expected roles and responsibilities at all levels of education governance towards safe return to school.

To commit to minimum expectations and standards for safe return to school and to agree on best decisions in learning recovery upon school resumption, she said.

Mentiki also advocated for the continued use of face masks, frequent hand washing, hand sanitizers by students and teachers among other Nigerians as precautionary measures against COVID-19, adding that COVID-19 is real.

She urged stakeholders to continue to educate and sensitize their children and other people on the need to continue adheringto COVID-19 protocols.

The 36 state governors are to hold an emergency meeting over the threat by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to embark on an industrial action to demand that the Federal Government rescinds its decision on the recent hike in the prices of petroleum products and electricity.

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) disclosed this in a statement issued by its Head, Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Bello-Barkindo said that the emergency meeting scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday would seek ways of settling the rift and find a mutual agreement.

He said that all governors were expected to attend the first NGF emergency virtual teleconference to consider the matter which he described as of urgent national importance.

Bello-Barkindo said that the matter needs to be quickly resolved in order not to worsen the already bad situation of Nigerians as caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

U.S. expresses satisfaction over peaceful conduct of Edo election

The United States (U.S) government has expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the Edo State governorship elections on Sept. 19.

The U.S. government made this known in a message posted on the Facebook page of the United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria on Wednesday, as it hailed the people of Edo people for a credible and peaceful poll.

This is coming barely a week after issuing a visa ban threat on would-be perpetrators of electoral fraud in the last Saturday Edo State governorship election.

The U.S. government also lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies on the positive role played during the election, which it said, strengthened democracy in the country.

Congratulations to the people of Edo State on a credible and peaceful governorship election.

We thank the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigerian security services on the positive role they played in the election and commend their work in strengthening Nigerias democracy.

We recognize the critical role that Gov. Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu played in promoting peace.

We also thank our civil society partners for their invaluable work in upholding democracy and accountability in this election, the U.S. said.

The United States, however, expressed concern over cases of reported violence and vote-buying, including the intimidation of voters and civil society observers.

The U.S. government also called on all stakeholders, including INEC, political parties, and the security agencies to improve the electoral process during the Oct. 10 Ondo State governorship election.

The United States remains concerned with reports of some violence that did emerge during the election, and reports of vote-buying and intimidation of both voters and civil society domestic observers.

We will continue to encourage all stakeholders, including INEC, political parties, and the security services to improve the electoral process in the upcoming Ondo State governorship election.

Ndukuba, however, appealed to the Church not to allow the current challenges in the country to affect the spread of the gospel and the love for the country.

European Union

The EUs migration system has come under increasing pressure in recent years, with bottlenecks forming at external borders.

Under current EU rules, the country where people first generally arrive has to process their asylum claims.

This means countries with external borders carry a disproportionate burden.

While some countries argue for a mechanism to automatically redistribute asylum seekers, others such as Hungary, the Czech Republic and Austria strongly oppose this.

Rights activists are concerned that the new measures could see a tightening of asylum rules, including increased detentions at the EUs borders.

With the proposals set to cause fights between the EU countries, it is far from certain that they will be approved by the EU leaders and European Parliament.

Previous attempts have failed.

According to the commissions document registry, the EU executive body is to propose a set of new and amended regulations, including on the screening of asylum seekers and on crisis situations.

In the wake of the disastrous fire, earlier this month, at the Moria camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, which hosted some 12,000 people, the commission is also expected to propose a solidarity mechanism for crisis moments.

Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State

Zamfara Government says it has alerted security agencies to track the whereabouts of over N37 billion refunds on Federal Government projects executed by the state.

Alhaji Rabiu Garba, the state Commissioner of Finance, announced this while addressing journalists in Gusau on Tuesday.

Garba alleged that the immediate past administration led by former governor, Abdulaziz Yari might have misappropriated the money.

The commissioner said the amount was initially quoted at over N47 billion as the funds used by the former administration in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of 14 federal roads in the state.

We understood that the cost of the verified projects at the Federal Ministry of Works stood at over N37 billion.

But when we asked for refunds of the said amount, it was confirmed by both the Federal Ministry of Works and the Debt Management Office that the amount had been paid fully.

On further investigation, we gathered that the money was collected by the Director-General of Nigerian Governors Forum and one lady who also worked in the same place on instructions from former Zamfara government.

We wonder how people who are not indigenes of the state nor have they ever worked for the state should collect such a colossal amount on behalf of the government and people of Zamfara, the commissioner said.

He assured that the present administration under Gov. Bello Matawalle will do everything possible to recover the money so that we can use it in the development of the state.

But reacting in an interview with the News agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, the former Commissioner of Finance in the Yari led government, Alhaji Muktar Idris exonerated the administration from any wrongdoing.

Idris said that the immediate past administration constructed the roads at the cost of over N60 billion and claimed the same amount from the Federal Government.

But a federal government verification committee only approved N37.4 billion refunds which was on completed projects.

Due to dearth of funds to repay such projects to about 23 states, which stood at over N500 billion, it was agreed at the governors forum that the states would collect the refunds in two tranches via promissory notes that would mature in three years.

The states were to receive 40 per cent in the first instalment, in which Zamfaras due amount stood at N14.9 billion.

All the affected state governors also agreed that the director-general of the Governors Forum should collect for them.

I still have the documents with me where we put over N10 billion as discounted from N14.9 billion into our joint account because we needed the money.

So, we discounted and collected the amount through the Debt Management Office, Idris told NAN.

He explained further that the second promissory note was for N22 billion which was also discounted to a little over N17 billion.

All the money had been deposited into the state governments accounts.

Zamfara people are free to check and verify these facts, he said.

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has charged his counterpart in Edo, Gov. Godwin Obaseki to be magnanimous and graceful in victory.

Okowa gave the charge when the newly re-elected Gov. Obaseki, led a team on a thank you visit to Okowa in Asaba.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the media unit of the Delta Government House, Okowa congratulated Obaseki for the victory recorded in the election.

Okowa expressed appreciation to God for the victory, saying that he was inspired to support Obaseki because of his humility and the fact that he was being oppressed.

I want to congratulate you once again and I feel very excited that you won the election.

I believe God did this in your life because you have proven to be a very humble man and people who boast too much dont usually end well.

I urge you to show lots of magnanimity and grace, but do not allow the lions and the tigers to torment the people again.

May God give you the enabling grace to fulfill all your campaign promises.

Your people are expecting a lot from you because of their huge support and I pray that God assist you with more funds to provide for the needs of the people.

I thank all our party members and the Edo people for their resilience in ensuring your re-election.

Now that we are all in the same political party, it makes it easier for us to relate with ourselves in this region, he said.

Okowa also commended the Edo Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, for his loyalty and dedication, describing him as a supportive, humble and reliable partner.

In his remarks, Obaseki said that his re-election will pave way for integration and consolidation in the South-South region.

The Edo Governor was accompanied by his wife, Betsy, Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu and wife, members of the National Assembly from Edo and other top government functionaries.

He said the delegation was in Asaba to thank Okowa and the people of Delta for their support to his re-election.

Obaseki said that the support of Gov. Okowa and Deltans had rekindled the spirit of the old Bendel.

He added that his re-election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would pave the way for regional cooperation and development with all the governors in the South-South belonging to one political party.

On Sept. 20, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Obaseki winner of the Saturdays governorship election in Edo State.

INECs Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, declared Obaseki winner of the election after polling the highest number of votes as mandated by the law.

The results collated in 18 LGAs early Sunday, show that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, won in 15 Local Government Areas of the state.

Obaseki, who is the PDPs governorship candidate defeated his closest rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with a total of 307,955.

Ize-Iyamu, however, polled a total of 223,619.

Twenty-three people, including seven school children, have died in a fuel tanker fire accident which occurred at Felele area of Lokoja,Kogi, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Idris Ali, who disclosed this in Lokoja, said the seven school children comprised 10 male adults and six female adults.

Ali said that three of the children were females while the remaining four were burnt beyond recognition.

He said five of the dead victims were students and staff of the Kogi State Polytechnic located few metres away from the scene of the incident.

According to him, 24 people were involved in the accident which occurred some minutes before 8 a.m., and that only one female child survived with a minor injury.

The commander said that 10 vehicles, including five cars, three tricycles and two motorcycles were also burnt in the inferno.

He said that the corpses had been deposited at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, where the only survivor was also receiving treatment.

He said that 11 corpses had been claimed for burial by their relations.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident has thrown some schools that lost their children in the accident into mourning as they hurriedly closed down.

One of them is the Baptist Group of Schools at Ganaja, which lost three pupils and their parents to the accident, and whose management immediately closed the school till Sept. 28 in honour of the deceased.

NAN gathered that the accident occurred when an Abuja bound fuel tanker had a brake failure and in the process fell down at a spot close to GT Plaza and spilled its content on the road, which immediately ignited fire.

The fire engulfed the entire spot and extended to other parts of the area, including a major bus stop where school children , workers and other people were waiting to board vehicles to their various destinations.

Meanwhile, Gov. Yahaya Bello has expressed shock and sorrow over the fatal tanker fire accident .

The governors reaction was contained in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Mohammed Onogu.

Bello lamented the loss of lives and property in the accident which he described as very sad and tragic.

He expressed his deepest condolences to the relations of the dead victims and grieved with those that lost their property.

He also commiserated with the students and staff of the state Polytechnic , urging them to remain calm and peaceful and bear the loss of their colleagues and staff with great fortitude. (NAN)

Edo Election: Residents congratulate Obaseki

The much publicised governorship election in Edo has taken place as scheduled on Sept. 29 and the winner has emerged.

Looking back at the peaceful conduct of the election, it has, incontrovertibly, proved wrong cynics expectations of violence during the election, a development that many political observers see as a sign of hope for the countrys democratic process.

The election began with the enthusiasm of the electorates who complied with all security measures and filed out in various quarters of the state, expecting a credible election.

With peaceful presentation and impressive turnout of voters in most wards across the state, critics agree that Edo citizens really know what they want with respect to who governs them.

While security agencies, going by security reports, did not envisage violence, they, nonetheless, provided a security network described as a better deal by many observers and civil society organizations.

With total compliance with restriction of movement across the state, the process of making the election peaceful and credible was very smooth.

Even in fairly remote places such as Uzzebba, Igueben, Auchi, Ososo, Ekpoma, Jattu and Ughoton, among other towns and villages in Edo, voters expressed the willingness to contribute to the making of a leader for another four years.

But, who wins the Edo governorship election is a riddle solved by the choice of Edo citizens via the announcement of the results by the umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that announced votes cast for each of the candidates.

With the benefit of hindsight, Edo has 192 wards and 18 local government areas with most of electorates holding Permanent Voter Card (PVC) in Edo South district.

Now, for the election that produced the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki for a second term in office on Saturday, INEC announced that only 1.72 million voters had PVCs.

Out of this, Edo South District alone has 1,281,414 card carriers, meaning the attention of all the candidates would be in the district.

INEC however claims that the level of ineligible voters in Edo is on account of failure of many citizens to collect their PVCs.

So, observers believe that if there would be any electoral malpractice, it is likely to be more pronounced in Edo South.

Although some voters alleged that certain political parties attempted to induce them to vote for their candidates, the claim could not be substantiated by security operatives.

Even, Gov. Godwin Obaseki of the state who won the election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged that vote buying was visible in many polling units.

Obaseki stated further that he expected better preparations from INEC for the governorship poll, rather than voters waiting in the queue for more than an hour.

According to him, to wait for one and half hours in the queue before exercising his franchise was a bit disappointing.

Given that this is a sole day election, I expected a bit more planning and preparation and resources should have been put into this election.

Obaseki, who won by scoring the highest votes cast of 307, 955, in a brief acceptance speech, however, dedicated the victory to the collective resolve of the Edo electorates to destroy Godfatherism in the state.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing a free and fair election; irrespective of the platform he contested the election.

Also, the Chairman of PDP in Edo, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, said that the people of the state voted for the governor again because they believed he meant well for the state.

Aziegbemi said: This is somebody we can give the umbrella to, so that the people of Edo will smile again.

During the accreditation and voting, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the peaceful and smooth electoral process.

The process is good and going on smoothly; there is no thuggery and violence, Ize-Iyamu said.

But in a twist, after the verdict, Ize-Iyamu, who scored 223,619 votes, expressed concern about the results of the election.

I thank and appreciate my supporters who had to endure many evils, including being prevented from voting, for their support and determination during the election.

I assure you all that I am studying the results along with other party members and will announce my next move, he said in a message.

In the same vein, the Chairman, Edo APC Media Campaign Council, Mr John Mayaki, said that the party rejected the result, citing alleged strong arm tactics in the process.

Our people were arbitrarily arrested; many of the figures were fabricated. Areas where we won, they cancelled them; they decreased the votes in areas we had advantage.

They rejected our results and jerked up theirs, Mayaki alleged.

However, among the citizens, opinions are divided on which political parties and candidates could deliver specific development projects in the state.

Many voters in the state note that while peaceful and credible elections are essential tools for the development of the state, a good candidate would be needed for such development projects

They argue that all stakeholders must ensure that efforts are made to make democracy work irrespective of personal interests.

Miss Gina Osewenkae, a teacher, said that the election was free and fair.

We expect more from him for the next four years, Osewenkae said while referring to the winner, Obaseki.

Mr Ehisunwen Osayande, a resident, said majority of people voted their conscience. We commend the media and INEC for monitoring votes strictly.

Also, Mr Lucky Osagie, a resident of Benin, said that the Edo election had taught Nigerians to defend and wait for their votes to be counted after elections.

Nigeria can have a free and fair election if godfatherism is put aside. INEC did a very good job by monitoring votes strictly, Osagie said.

Many residents of the city also commended the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, for maintaining neutrality in the election.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the INEC, and security agencies for the success of the election.

IPAC described the poll and its outcome as exemplary and recommended the same method applied in Edo for the Ondo State governorship election on Oct.10.

IPAC Chairman, Tade Ademola said that the level playing ground allowed by the President and INEC had further deepened Nigerias democracy.

Obaseki, Ize-Iyamu and other 12 candidates participated in the contest with 557,443 accredited voters and 537,407 valid votes.

The rejected votes were 12,835 and the total number of voters cast was 550,242.

Many political analysts, therefore, conclude that holding such election amid forecast of violence which never occurred is a testimony that if political actors allow the will of the electorates in any election to prevail, there will be less apprehension during elections. (NANFeatures)

FG restates commitment to job creation

The Minister of Environment, Dr Mohammed Mahmood, has pledged the Federal Governments commitment to training of beneficiaries of high-pressure polyurethane foaming machines to create more jobs.

Mahmood made the pledge during inauguration and hand over of four sets of portable high-pressure polyurethane foaming machines to beneficiary companies in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister supervised a demonstration of how the equipment worked.

The equipment is a spraying and pouring machine under the UNIDO component of stage II of the Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) phase-out Management Plan (HPMP).

While handling over the machines to beneficiaries, the minister commended UNIDO and the Multilateral Fund of the Montreal Protocol for their assistance.

He said that the machines were intended to help beneficiaries manage their transition from the use of HCFC based foaming equipment to HCFC and Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) free ones by replacing the existing equipment to use environment friendly methyl formulae (MF) as the foaming agent.

Mahmood added that the transition was aimed at phasing-out the eligible consumption of 30.5 metric tonnes of HCFC-141b used in the manufacturing of polyurethane foam in the production of cold rooms and other commercial refrigerators.

In order to achieve this phase out target, the government, in collaboration with UNIDO, will ensure that adequate training is provided on the use of the machines, inspect the installation and routinely monitor their use, the minister said.

The Regional Director of UNIDO, Mr Jean Bakole, explained that Nigeria, in conjunction with UNIDO, was not only contributing to the protection of the ozone layer but also supporting the industrialisation drive in the country.

Nigeria, being a party to the Montreal Protocol, has an obligation to phase-out HCFCs.

This cannot be achieved without the manufacturing and servicing players of refrigeration and air-conditioning, agriculture, fire-fighting sectors and so on, Bakole said.

He said that the UNIDO-Nigeria Country Programme spanned from 2018 to 2022 and had nine programmatic components with component eight as Environmental Protection.

This country programme will contribute towards the industrialisation drive without compromising the Nigerian Environment.

Responding on behalf of the other three beneficiaries, Mr William Adebisi of Coldcare Limited, thanked the government for the gesture.

Adebisi promised that the beneficiaries would put the machines to good use and create more employment opportunities. (NAN)

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with former governor of Ekiti, Ayo Fayose, over the sad loss of his immediate elder sister, Mrs Moji Ladeji.

The presidents condolence message is conveyed in a statement by Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Buhari prayed Gods comfort for the former governor on the sad incident.

The president equally condoled with the nuclear family of the deceased, the larger Fayose and Ladeji families, friends, relations and associates.

He urged them to take heart, since death is the ultimate end of all mortals.

Buhari also prayed that the soul of the departed would rest in peace.(NAN)

Enugu govt. sets up emergency response plan to mitigate flooding

Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State says the state has set up an emergency response plan to mitigate any incident of flooding.

Ugwuanyi made this known in Enugu on Wednesday while receiving a delegation of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) who were in the state on flood advocacy visit.

The NEMA delegation also paid a similar advocacy visit to the 103 Battalion Akwunanaw in Enugu, which had been designated the Disaster Response Unit (DRU) of the state.

Ugwuanyi was represented by the Executive Secretary of Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Mrs Nkechi Eneh.

He said the state had received tremendous human and material support from NEMA in the areas of capacity building, training and relief materials.

The governor said that the state recorded cases of flooding yearly with huge negative impacts.

Ugwuanyi said that the state was also aware of the 2020 flooding as predicted by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMeT).

As part of the ongoing implementation of the states emergency response plan to mitigate flooding and its devastating impact; we have engaged council chairmen and various chairmen of the Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs) to embark on the following:

Organize flood sensitization campaign in communities most likely to be impacted and we have engaged in massive desilting of drainages to allow free flow of water.

Put in place mechanism and sensitization to discourage dumping of refuse inside water channels and removal of water hyacinths or weeds from water channels to allow free flow of water, he said.

Ugwuanyi also noted that the state Ministry of Health was already working on mechanisms to prevent public health hazards from flooding by providing emergency drugs for women and children affected by flooding.

These include mass immunization of children in the 10 council areas predicted to be impacted by NIHSA through Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENS-PHCDA).

Another is the acquisition of mobile toilets through the state Ministry of Environment, he said.

The governor thanked NEMA for the advocacy visit and engagement, and urged the agency to do more for the state.

He said more should be done especially as it concerned relief for the 2018 Uzo-Uwani council area flooding, which affected 3,500 hectares of farmlands with 2,500 persons displaced.

Also speaking, Lt.-Col. Yusuf Salisu, Commanding Officer of 103 Battalion, Akwunanaw, assured NEMA that officers and men of the command were ready to attend to any emergency when called upon.

Earlier, the Director-General (DG)of NEMA, AVM Muhammadu Muhammed (Rtd), called on the state to activate all contingency and emergency flood plans especially sensitization and preparation of all stakeholders.

Muhammed was represented by Mr James Eze, NEMA Team Leader of the advocacy visit.

He urged the state government to take proactive flood mitigation plans like opening of drains and waterways and massive flood sensitization campaigns in communities.

The NEMA DG also urged the government to identify high grounds and appeal to its residents in lowland and flood plains to relocate to such places as well as open effective communication between it and NEMA.

There is a need to stock SEMA warehouses to enable swift reaction to supply food and non-food items to Internally Displaced Persons prior to NEMA and other stakeholders intervention, he said.

NAN reports that in Enugu State, council areas prone to high risk of flooding include Enugu East, Udi, Nsukka, Enugu North, Enugu South and Oji-River.

Council areas that have low flooding risk are Igbo-Etiti. Ezeagu, Uzo-Uwani and Nkanu East. (NAN)
