The state Commandant of the corps, Babangida Dutsinma, made the disclosure during inspection visit to some of the agricultural investment sites on Saturday in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that sites visited included Golden Acres Limited, Federal Livestock Development Project, National Grains Reserve Silo, National Livestock Training Centre and Zonal Headquarters of National Livestock Project.

Dustinma said the visit was to assess the level of the protection given to the sites and their requirements for enhanced security.

He explained that the Corps had singned a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to train agro rangers at the
NSCDC training college in Katsina.

The target is to seethat agriculture allied investments both under federal and statesare properly manned and secured.

Security is everyones bussines, what is important is intelligence information.

If residents can provide us with useful information, we have personnel who are well trained and will curtail some security challenges particular at this time when raining reason has began.

No fewer than 68 members of two cult groups have renounced cult membership and surrendered weapons arms in Rivers.

The National Coordinator of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), CSP Ebere Amaraizu, made the disclosure in a statement in Enugu on Saturday.

Amaraizu said that the repentant cultists were members of Iceland and Degbam cult groups.

He said that they embraced peace by renouncing their membership and surrendering armsto become better citizens and contribute to nation-building.

He said that the renunciation was done at Ogbakiri in Emohua Local Government Area of the state.

The POCACOV coordinator said that the event was witnessed by some heads of security agencies, divisional police officer of Rumuji, community members and other stakeholders.

Twenty-five members of Iceland cult group and 43 cult members of dreaded Degbam cult group denouncedtheir membership, surrendered their weapons and offered to become better citizens.

DSP Yusuf Abdullahi, Commander Anti-Cultism Unit, Elele Zone, and the POCACOV Coordinator in Rivers, representing POCACOV national coordinator, also witnessed the event and thanked the repentant cultists for taking the bold step.

It is good that youths willingly repent and offer to become better citizens to contribute to national development.

POCACOV will further re-orient and continually admonish them not to go back; but to remain steadfast in their new and more beneficial way of life, he said.

NAN reports that POCACOV is an initiative of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, meant to prevent youths from joining cultism and offering olive branch to repentant ones with a view to making them better citizens.

Gov, Babagana Zulum

Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno has executed 326 capital projects across the state in the past one year, an official has said.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Usman Jidda, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Maiduguri.

Jidda said the administration also implemented 49 policies and programmes.

Some of the projects executed by the administration under Gov. Babagana Zulum are construction of 6,544 sub-urban and low-cost houses in 12 Local Government Areas of the state for resettlement of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees.

The 133 boreholes, 37 new primary healthcare centres in 17 Local governments, 30 new and rehabilitated roads, and the ongoing construction of the first flyover in Maiduguri, he said.

On security, Jidda said that 300 surveillance vehicles were procured and distributed to security agencies and volunteers in the state.

The SSG said that commissioners would conduct sectoral briefings with more details on the projects executed in their respective ministries from June 15.

A Community leader in Anambra, Chief James Uyamadu, says most rural dwellers in Anambra have yet to come to terms with the reality of COVID-19 spread in the state.

Uyamadu said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Sunday in Igbakwu, Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra.

NAN reports that Ayamelum is an agrarian clan in Anambra and predominantly rural.

The community leader said that the state Task Force committee on COVID-19 needed to step up its enforcement measures jointly with communities if the virus must be contained within the state.

This time should not be business as usual because we have got a challenge in our hands, which if we fail to face squarely may wipe out the people of the state.

There is need for government to keep a close eye on the activities of the COVID-19 task force team, so that they are made to be on their beats for greater results, he said.

Uyamadu said that a high level of ignorance of the reality of the deadly virus among rural dwellers existed adding that vigorous sensitisation needed to be given to them through various channels.

It is a feat that needs to be tackled fast before the wild spread of the virus gets into the communities of the state and wipe out the residents.

The churches, kindred meetings, age grade meetings, among other channels are required to be engaged well for a high positive result to be achieved, he said.

Uyamadu said that ignorance of the existence of the virus among the people especially the rulers dwellers would remain a major factor responsible for community transmission if not checked.

As a catechist in Saint Marys Catholic Church, Igbakwu, I have had various encounters with people and with my interactions with them, majority of the rural dwellers believe that Coronavirus does not exist.

Across the state, common belief of the people is that the issue of the Coronavirus does not exist.

To them, it is a scam and a platform for siphoning the nations wealth by the government, he said.

Government should help matters and operate in a very open manner as well as create awareness against stigmatisation and explain how the virus moves.

This is important so that people who contract it will not be seen as evil persons, he said.

He said that the traditional ruler of the community, in his efforts to support government on the fight against the virus, had continued to use local town criers to inform the people about their parts in the fight.

Uyamadu urged religious leaders to dwell more on informing the people about the existence of the virus in the state and the need for them to observe the precautionary measures to avoid the spread in the communities.

The relaxed measures do not imply non existence of the virus. This must be drummed into the ears of the people in the manner they would understand, he said.

Uyamadu also said that the community leaders should educate the people on the COVID-19 law and advise them to strictly observe the rules and regulations put in place by the governments.

He said observation of social distancing, hand washing with soap and running water, use of sanitisers, as well as the use of face masks should be well talked about.

He urged religious leaders to keep a service at a time which should last for only one hour while burial rites performers should keep to the 30 persons per gathering rule.

Uyamadu said that more stringent measures needed to be applied for huge success to be achieved in the fight against COVID-19. (NAN)

A Consultant Haematologist at the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Uche Nwokwu says Nigeria is yet to meet up to 10 per cent of its blood need in the country.

Nwokwu made the call in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja to commemorate the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD)

WBDD is celebrated every June 14, to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

We are still far from what is needed but unfortunately, in a country of over 200 million and we are not yet met up to 10 per cent of our blood need as a country.

So many people die because of blood loses, in our country where they are security challenges, where they are killings and trauma, crises in various communities, road traffic accidents, various diseases condition and people are going for various surgeries.

The blood need of the country is quite huge and we are very far from meeting that need, so Nigerians are encouraged to willing go to any blood donation centres around.

Federal Government has established the National blood Transfusion Service, and that has zonal offices across the country.

They can voluntary go to those centres and donate, and when they are donor drive activities in their neighbourhood, they are encouraged to donate as they donate, life is saved.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) stipulates that at least one per cent of the population must be able or willing to donate blood.

Nigeria needs between two to four million units of blood annually with the population of 200 million going by the indicators that the WHO had provided to be able to meet the transfusion requirement of Nigerians.

Nwokwu said there is still blood supply deficiency in the country despite the efforts of the Federal Government and Civil Society Organisations on awareness creation.

He attributed the blood supply deficiency to some myths surrounding blood donation.

I mean, the awareness and response is still far from expected because of the myth surrounding blood donation so there is still phobia for donating blood.

They are afraid of the consequences of fainting, of losing blood themselves and that has affected blood donation.

They are also traditional belief on blood that has affected the response of Nigerians to donate blood.

The consultant, urged Nigerians to dismiss the myths surrounding blood donation and donate blood regularly.

They are benefits of donating blood; Apart from the moral satisfaction of saving lives, if you donate blood within two weeks, your system has a way of replacing the blood you have donated.

It essentially makes one healthier if you donate and it is advisable to donate blood quarterly, once in three or four months is allowed. It makes the person healthier.

Personally, I donate twice every year -January and July. I have been doing that and I have not had cause to need blood myself and have not to fall sick. In fact, I can remember the last time I took drug for malaria.

I do it as sacrifice and God has been using it to strengthen me.

Archbisop Adewale Martins

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins, has called on NGOs to take up the challenge of partnering with youths in Nigeria to restore whatever that was lost in the environment.

Martins made the call in a statement issued by Mr Oladapo Soneye, Head, Communications, Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), in Abuja.

The Bishop spoke at a programme in commemorating the 2020 World Environment Day and the Fifth Anniversary of Laudato Si.

Laudato Si is the second encyclical of Pope Francis that called on people of the world to take swift and unified global action against consumerism and irresponsible development, environmental degradation and global warming.

Martins also the Grand Patron, Network of Young Catholic Carers for the Environment in Nigeria (NYCCEN), said more than ever before, youths should be engaged to achieve conservation of the environment.

According to him, it will be more encouraging when we see more organisations taking up the challenge to work with youths to restore what we have lost in the environment just like what NYCCEN and NCF are doing.

He expressed his appreciation in the collaboration between NYCCEN and NCF in mobilising the teeming youths to care for the environment, now on the verge of collapse.

Also, the Minister of State for Environment, Mrs Sharon Ikeazor, said that faith-based organisations have unparalleled reach and mobilisation power, because of the large numbers of their devotees in every corner of Nigeria.

Ikeazor said she believed that faith-based organisations have enormous potential to influence national and global policy and tip the scales positively on the global movement needed to address environmental challenges.

She added that young people were socially conscious active agents of change, responsible idealists and well versed in technology to combat environmental crises facing the country.

The Federal Ministry of Environment is working, and will continue to work with youths in our efforts to restore, protect and conserve Mother Nature.

Most of our ecological interventions are community-based, the minister said.

Also, Dame Marie Fatayi-Williams, NYCCEN Initiator, expressed displeasure at the rate human activities continued to pose great threat to the environment.

Fatayi-Williams said that this was making the earth one huge dump site, which has become an existential threat for all.

This is a time to be sorry for our cruelty to creation for our plundering and overexploitation of its riches, consumption habits and lifestyle that had led to the loss of biodiversity, pollution, climate change, disease and poverty, she said.

Fatayi-Williams applauded the Popes Laudato Si initiative, which had spurred interest and participation from youths, especially the plastic recycling to bricks.

She said that it would help put money in the hands of the poor and unemployed youths.

Commenting, Dr Muhtari Aminu-Kano, NCF Director-General, revealed how the foundation engaged Nigerian youths in 2019 to combat climate change.

, in his presentation titled All Hands on Deck: Building an Inter-faith Youth Movement for the Environment in Nigeria.

Aminu-Kano said in 2019, the foundation embarked on a nationwide youths advocacy on climate action which involved over one thousand youths to call for urgent action from the governments, businesses and individuals.

He said that youths comprising secondary school pupils, tertiary institution students, religious groups and civil society organisations (CSOs) were constantly being engaged in environmental education, waste management, beach clean-up exercise, recycling and tree planting.

NCF is developing Youth Action Manual on Climate Change for youths from ages five to 25 years to guide their efforts, Aminu-Kano said.

Commenting, Prof. Rosemary Egonmwan, Head, Conservation Unit, Department of Zoology, University of Lagos (UNILAG), said that robust biodiversity and healthy ecosystems were essential in any country for sustainable development and human wellbeing.

It is, therefore, very important to conserve biodiversity and use its components in a sustainable manner in order to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Apart from serving as a source of inspiration, information, tourism and recreation, Nigerias biodiversity also satisfies scientific and educational pursuits, she said.

Also, Revd. (Fr.) Joshtrom Kureethadam, Coordinator, Ecology and Creation, Vatican Dicastery for Integral Human Development, shared a seven-year action plan of Laudato Si Initiative.

Kureethadam said the essence was to make communities around the world to be totally sustainable in the spirit of the integral ecology of Laudato Si.

The coordinator said that actions would commence from families and run through primary and secondary schools, universities, Catholic Churches, hospitals, businesses, farms and religious groups.

NYCCEN was established by catholic youths who are passionate about the environment.

They engaged other young Catholics in using available means and platforms to campaign for restoration of harmony between man and earth. (NAN)

The Federal Government has pledged to scale up its annual blood collection rate and sustain ongoing efforts to expand the reach of its services through the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) across the country.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire made the pledge at a news conference to commemorate the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) on Sunday in Abuja.

WBDD is celebrated every June 14, to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

According to the minister,in 2019, about 24,483 units of blood were collected and screened from volunteer blood donors through the 17 centres of NBTS network.

19,676 units of blood were issued to various hospitals nationwide for transfusion purposes.

The National Blood Transfusion service wishes to increase its scope of work, by scaling up its annual blood collection rate and sustaining ongoing efforts to expand the reach of its services.

I am pleased to announce that the legislative process of the Bill for the establishment of a National Blood Service Commission is at an advanced stage and awaiting public hearing at the National Assembly.

My Ministry is currently considering proposals for a major investment, from public and private sectors, to upgrade the capacity of the National Blood Transfusion Service to enable it achieve its potential.

To achieve its potential to produce blood components and plasma derived medicinal products at a commercial scale, that meets international best standards and to enter the world market.

This will ensure optimal utilisation of each unit of whole blood collected, the minister said.

According to him, our population of over 200 million, Nigerias estimated blood need is about two million units per year.

Unfortunately, much less than that is currently collected, leaving unmet needs that lead to avoidable deaths, morbidities and ill-health. You can help change this.

In line with its mandate, Nigerias NBTS strives to provide adequate supplies of safe blood, screened with modern fully-automated enzyme linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA) technology.

Ehanire said during the COVID-19 pandemic, the supply of safe blood was at risk, because regular blood donation drives have had to be postponed or deferred.

He said regulations for self-isolation, lockdown and fear of infection had hindered the usual blood donors from accessing blood donation centres.

Transport and trade restrictions have also led to disruptions of global supply chains, putting countries at risk of shortages of critical supplies and equipment used for blood donation, processing, testing and transfusion, to patients in need of blood.

According to him, the need for blood is universal because safe blood is a critical and indispensable healthcare requirement nowadays, both for treatment and urgent interventions.

It plays an essential, life-saving role in maternal and child care, especially bleeding after delivery, in severe anaemia, sickle cell disease, accidents and emergency situations after natural or industrial disasters.

Blood transfusion is also key at most complex surgical operations.

The minister, however, said access to safe blood was still the privilege of not many people in the world.

Most low-and middle-income countries struggle to make safe blood available to their citizens, because the quantity of blood donation is insufficient and the standardised equipment for testing blood is expensive and scarce.

Globally, 42 per cent of blood collection and use is in high income countries, which constitute just 16 per cent of global population.

Blood donation is therefore needed all over the world to assure individuals and communities of access to safe and quality-assured blood and blood products whenever the need arises, the minister said.

In addition, Ehanire called on people of goodwill to become life-savers by volunteering to join the people who regularly donate blood to make safe blood available to everyone in need of it.

Your involvement and support will help to ensure greater impact for World Blood Donor Day, increase the worldwide realisation that giving blood is an act of solidarity and service to mankind.

Your support is an act of service to mankind and that services providing safe blood and blood products are an essential element of respectable health care systems, he said.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Sunday denied news making round that Ms Mary Uduk, its Acting Director-General has resigned from the commission.

Mrs Efe Ebelo, Head, Corporate Communication, Securities and Exchange Commission, stated this in a statement obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Ebelo described the purported resignation of Uduk from the commission and a send forth party slated for June 15, as false.

Our attention has been drawn to a publication in the media on June 14, 2020, wherein the Acting Director General, Ms Mary Uduk is purported to have resigned from the Commission and a send forth party slated for Monday June 15.

The Commission therefore wishes to inform the general public that the Acting Director General of the SEC has not resigned her appointment with the Commission, neither has she handed over to anyone.

Uduk like every other staff of the Commission is awaiting the arrival of the new DG, Mr Lamido Yuguda who was cleared by the senate last week, Ebelo said.

She noted that no send forth party was being planned for Uduk as reported by the national paper.

Stakeholders in the capital market and the general public are therefore advised to disregard the contents of the aforementioned publication as they are false, Ebelo added.

NAN reports that Senate on June 10, confirmed the nomination of Yuguda as the new Director General of SEC.

Also confirmed alongside Yuguda were three Executive Commissioners nominees namely; Mr Reginald Karawusa, Mr Ibrahim Boyi and Mr Temidayo Obisan.

Their confirmation followed the submission of the report of the Committee on Capital Markets which was presented before the Senate by the Chairman, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

The Lagos State Government has asked 56 property owners sealed in Ikoyi and on Banana Island axis to produce their building plan permits and evidence of stage certification.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, said this in a statement by Mr Mukaila Sanusi, the spokesman of the ministry on Sunday.

Salako, had during an ongoing Special Enforcement Operations , said that the government was alarmed at the rate of unapproved and illegal structures springing up in Ikoyi and on Banana Island of the state.

The exercise continues to send strong signals of governments determination to guard the State Operative Development Plans.

Also, it is meant to curb illegal physical developments as the buildings/building construction sites sealed since the beginning of the Special Enforcement Operation midweek have reached 56 in number.

On Saturday alone, 22 were sealed for building permit and conformity issues. Of this total, 16 were sealed on Banana Island whilst six were sealed at Adeyemi Lawson, Mcpherson and surrounding streets in Ikoyi, he said.

Salako urged the affected property owners to report to his office at the Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja to perfect their documents.

He also advised property owners and developers to always obtan valid documents from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) before they start construction.

The rate at which developers in these elite areas flout our planning laws by going ahead to erect buildings without the necessary permits is disturbing.

This untoward act that is inimical to the sustainable development of our environment must be curtailed in the interest of all, he said.

Salako said that property owners in Ikoyi and Banana Island must produce on demand, their planning permits and evidence of stage certification or risk their property being sealed.

He said that the measures were in compliance with the states policy of Zero Tolerance for Illegal Developments adding that, the exercise would be extended to other parts of the state.

Plateau Government has allocated portions of land of the Brewery Agro Research Company (BARC) to people, to reinvigorate the Jos International Breweries (JIB).

The land located in Zallaki community of Bassa Local Government Area was allocated to different categories of qualified people.

The beneficiaries include: farmers associations, civil servants and pensioners.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that JIB was established in 1975 by the Joseph Gomwalk administration which BARC farm was part of its subsidiary.

Gov.Simon Lalong while issuing certificates of lease to beneficiaries of the allocation on Saturday at the farm, said government was committed to boosting the states economy through agriculture and reviving all its moribound companies.

Lalong said during the operation of the brewery, which got its raw materials mostly from the farm, massive revenue was generated leading to establishment of subsidiary companies such as Pioneer Milling Company, Plateau Bottling Company Ltd. and
BARC.

According to him, during the boom days of BARC which was sold to a private farmer for more than 20 years, it employed more than 4000 workers through direct or indirect means.

In its days of glory, the farm was into cultivation of dry and irrigated crops such as grain, vegetables and tree crops and cattle ranches for rearing cows.

Poultry farms with parent and hatchery units;Pig rearing ; Abbatoir for poultry,Pigs and cattle as well as operated a big farm for fishery,he said.

The governor said the farm was leased to beneficiaries whom included civil servants, farmers associations and pensioners, saying the measure was part of efforts to revamp the farm.

The desire to return the farm to operations in the era of economic diversification that is driven by agriculture, made us to consider the re-acquisition of the farm through purchase of 90 per cent of its shares.

So far, we have paid N1 billion for the re-acquisition of BARC Farm shares, representing about 70 per cent of the total sum, and we are hoping to complete the balance before the end of the year,he said.

He said portions of the land were allocated for the current cropping season to be cultivated temporarily, pending when suitable investors would take over management of the entire farm.

Our dream in the long run is that the Farm which has potential for occupying over 30 per cent to 40 per cent shares of the Agro-allied market in Nigeria, will leverage on these existing structures to cultivate crops that the State has comparative advantage in, Lalong said.

He assured the beneficiaries of safety, saying hunters whom were part of the State Governments home grown security outfit, Operation Rainbow, would be deployed at the farm.

He also that said steps were already being taken to ensure acess to the farm through repairs of its deplorable roads.

The governor advised the people of the state, especially civil servants, to embrace farming as an additional source of income.

He said that agriculture was the hope of government and individuals in coping with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy, saying it was one of the comparative advantages of Plateau.

The Managing Director of Plateau Investment and Property Company (PIPC), Mr Chris Yilzak, said operation of the Farm would have multiplier effects on the state economy especially establishment of agro allied companies.

The State Commisioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Hosea Finangwai, commended the governor for his efforts at boosting agriculture in the state.

Finangwai said the governor had been providing farm inputs, counterpart funding for Agricultural programmes,among other gestures.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Eugene Manji, who is also the Chairman of the State chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC), assured the governor that they would keep to the terms of the lease.

Manji thanked the Lalong for the provision of security at BARC, saying it would encourage more people to farm there.

NAN reports that the governor also distributed bags of Fertilisers to beneficiaries of the farm allocation.

No fewer than 51 medical personnel had so far tested positive for the Nobel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Bauchi State.

Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, the Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (BASPHCDA), made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday in Bauchi.

Mohammed said that 17 inmates of the correctional facility in the state also tested positive to the COVID-19.

He lamented that one of the medical personnel lost his life to the virus in the line of duty.

The chairman disclosed that an isolation centre had been established in the correctional facility to ensure that no inmate escape.

We have 51 medical personnel, who have been infected so far in the state and out of this figure, one lost his life in the line of duty.

Also, we currently have 17 inmates who have been confirmed positive for COVID-19.

We created an isolation centre in the facility because we dont want the inmates to escape.

Fourteen of them are currently on treatment in the isolation centre inside the facility, Mohammed said.

Mohammad, who is also the Chairman, Bauchi State Contact Tracing Committee on COVID-19, however, advised health workers in the state to be very vigilant and ensure that they properly make use of their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

He said that the state government was conducting an active community search, taking samples from members of the communities for testing.

We are engaged in massive community search, trying to take samples of members of the communities, said the BASPHCDA boss.

NAN reports that Bauchi state had so far recorded 402 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 230 had been discharged, 11 deaths and 161 patients on admission.

Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen, has appealed to Nigerians to observe safety guidelines to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

Mr Rotiba Gabriel of the Ministrys Press Unit said in a statement that Tallen made the appeal when the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) paid her a courtesy visit in Abuja.

The group was led by Salute Nigeria Initiative and Police Campaign Against Cultism and other Vices (POCACOV)

The minister stressed the need for parents, most especially women to wash their hands, use face mask and follow the rule of proper hygiene.

She also advised them to boost the immune system of the family in other to remain safe from COVID-19.

She commended the efforts of the Presidential Task-force on COVID-19 and others for all the proactive measures to keep Nigeria safe from the pandemic.

Tallen, noted that the increasing cases of rape and killings, especially during the COVID-19 was worrisome.

She called on all stakeholders to strive towards ridding the society of the menace and ensuring perpetrators were reported to authorities for prosecution.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Mr Chielo Ojirika, stressed the need to educate women on the measures to protect the family against the COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world.

Ojirika, disclosed that the group was working on producing a campaign video on COVID-19 to educate more Nigerians to observe good hygiene practices.

He further condemned the rates of rape and other forms of violence against women and children, calling for incarceration as the major punishmentfor rapists which would deter others.

The Light Interveners Foundation (LIF), an NGO, on Saturday took itsCOVID-19 awareness campaign to Utako market in Abuja, to enlighten people on how to curb its spread and stay safe.

Mr Israel Abam, Chairman of the foundationsaid that the gesture was to support Federal Governments effort to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

We know that the COVID-19 situation in the country and the world is serious so we decided to contribute whatever way we can to the fight against the virus.

No matter how small it is; it will be appreciated. We decided to come to a major market in the city where lots of people come to shop, Abam said.

He said that lot of sensitasation needed to be done as people still go about their normal life without minding the effect of the virus.

We found out that many people are not using face mark or observing social distancing.

We are here to create awareness and sensitize the market leadership so that they can educate the community on the danger of COVID-19.

We met with the management of the market to give our message and hope to return to meet with the associations to carry out the sensitszation programme.

We need to be alive to do business so people must take care of themselves. Abam said.

He further said that the foundation would be giving out hand sanitizer, cotton high quality face masks and vitamins C zinc supplements.

He said that the foundation would also distribute handbills conveying safety measures and personal protection items.

Abam added that the foundation would also train selected organisations on crowd control as a measure of safety

Mrs Adaku Okoro,, who sells food items, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that most people in the market do not believe that COVID 19 exist.

People are not taking measures against the virus, she said.

She called on the government to put more effort in sensitising the people. (NAN)

National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

The Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Abdalla Adamu, has called on Nigerian students to rise up to the challenges of the modern world and join government in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.

Adamu made the call in an address to new students during the universitys 19th matriculation ceremony, which was held online on Saturday through Zoom application.

A statement issued by Mr Ibrahim Sheme, Director, Media and Publicity, NOUN disclosed that Adamu urged the students to assist government in eradicating future diseases like the current coronavirus.

The VC urged them to see any challenge they encounter in their quest for knowledge as a building block.

One block at a time, and you will erect a mansion, he said, adding, You are in the best position to do this because your learning is powered by your personal desire to learn.

Adamu noted that while many students enter higher institutions in order to become educated and get jobs, the matriculating students at NOUN already had jobs and occupations.

According to him, NOUN has optimised its online facilitation exercise such that students can easily interact directly with their lecturers because technology has become a commodity.

He pointed out that the university was the only one having a Directorate of Learning Content Management System (LCMS) which in due course could become a full-fledge online university.

He added that all the academic programmes of the university were fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in order to ensure their integrity.

Our programmes, quality assurance and delivery mechanisms are therefore more solid than those of many conventional universities who keep coming to us to see how we work this technological magic.

Adamu, who informed the students that his tenure of five years would end February 2021, noted that the 19th matriculation would be his last with the university.

I want to meet you in the next four years, during your graduation, not as Vice-Chancellor, full of knowledge and ready to take on the world as a result of your studentship in NOUN.

I want to proudly watch you graduate with flying colours as simply the best of the best, he said.

The matriculation oath was administered online on the students by the Registrar of the university, Mr Felix Edoka.

It ended with exchanges between the vice-chancellor and some of the students, who joined from remote locations as the event was beamed live on the social media and NOUN platforms.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bauchi State Council on Saturday elected and inaugurated new executive officials to run the affairs of the council for the next three years.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that theoffices of Chairman, Secretary, Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Assistant Secretary were keenly contested for, while the other positions were declared unopposed.

Alhaji Umar Said of the stateIinformation Chapel was elected chairman having polled 150 votes to defeat Bashir Idris of the Bauchi State Tadio Corporation.

Malam Abbas Maikano of the NTA emerged Vice Chairman with 114 votes to beat Hashimu Bulkachuwa, while Mr Garba Gadau was elected Secretary of the council with 120 votes after defeating his sole challenger, Malam Kabir Garba of Bauchi Radio who got 107 votes.

Mr Abubakar Waziri became the Treasurer with 162 votes to beat Mr Mohammed Inuwa of Globe FM who scored 62 votes, while the post of Assistant Secretary went to Hajiya Adama Ibrahim of the state Information Chapel with 205 votes to defeat Mr Sani Muazu of same state information charpel who scored 84 votes.

Mr Nazib Sani of Blueprint newspaper and Malam Danjuma Saleh of Bauchi Radio Corporation emerged Financial Secretary and Auditor, respectively, unopposed.

In his acceptance speech, the new Chairman, Malam Umar Said, appealed solicited for support from all, including losers, for the progress of the NUJ.

Power comes from the Almighty and He gives whom he wishes. I know how the NUJ members yearn for development.

I want to assure you that the new exco shall hit the ground running, Said said.

He pledged regular consultations and Congress meetings by the council to carry all members along and ensure effective service delivery. (NAN)

The Nigerian Youth Compact on COVID-19 (NYCC), says it will provide a minimum data of 10 million youth across the 774 local government areas in the country.

The National Chairman of NYCC, Comrade Gambo Haruna, made this known on a live streaming programme, which was monitored on zoom and Facebook by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on saturday.

The NYCC organised programme was tagged: One Stop Youth Talk.

Haruna assured that NYCC would achieve the data through five key areas, which were: Data gathering, Advocacy, Capacity building, Access and Resource in accordance with the United Nations Global Compact on Humanitarian Action and COVID-19.

He emphasised the importance of data in planning and the fight against Coronavirus, more importantly the Post-COVID.

He added that it was more threatening to the youth, without proper planning, to cushion the aftermath of the pandemic.

It will be a worthless effort if meaningful and accurate data of the youth in the country are not properly documented.

They will be the most hit during the post-COVID for constituting more than 60 per cent of the population and also being the drivers of the economy of Nigeria.

The youth compact can boast of accurate data of the youth in almost all the local government areas in the country, barely a week after it was unveiled, he said.

The Chairman expressed satisfaction with the massive inflow of the youth into the NYCC website to upload their data.

He also commended the associations partners like the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), Common Wealth Association of Youth Workers (CAYWA) Commonwealth Association of African Youth (CAAY), YES Project, Action Aid, Minister of State for Education, FCT Minister of State and several others for their efforts in the project.

Haruna urged the youth to register as members of the project, reminding them that the world was being reset and might not fully recover from the pandemic.

Mrs Millicent Osakwa, the moderator of the One Stop Youth Talk as well the head of publicity, said the youth compact welcomed membership from youth within the ages of 18 years and 40 years.

Osakwa said that the organisation was partnering Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Community Based Organisations and Faith Based Organisations in actualising the project.

She noted that the programme would be a weekly exercise that would engage Nigerian youth across the globe.

Nigeria records 627 new COVID-19 cases, another high for two consecutive days, the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control(NCDC) says.

In a tweet on Friday, the centre said Nigeria has 15,181 cases of the COVID-19.

The NCDC also said that as at June 12, 12 deaths were recorded.

The however said that no new state had reported a case in the last 24 hours.

NCDC said that Lagos state again led the state ranking with 229 new cases. Abuja trailed behind, reporting 65 new infections.

Other states with new infections include Abia (54), Borno (42), Oyo (35), Rivers (28), Edo (28), Gombe (27), Ogun (21), Plateau (18), Delta (18), Bauchi (10), Kaduna (10), Benue (9), Ondo (8), Kwara (6), Nasarawa (4), Enugu (4), Sokoto (3), Niger (3), Kebbi (3), Yobe (1), and Kano (1).

The NCDC said that till date, 15,181 cases had been confirmed, 9891 active cases 4891 cases have been treated and discharged deaths , 88, 432 samples have been collected, and 399 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The health agency said that in spite of the difficulties faced as it responds to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in the country, it will remain focused and committed to its mandate of protecting the health of all Nigerians.

The NCDC called on Nigerians as they celebrate Democracy Day to reflect on their journey as a nation and TakeResponsibility for the future they all seek.

NAN reports that the NCDC said it is ready to active the GeneXpert labs in locations and would start functioning on June 14.

Meanwhile, the measures for COVID-19 still remain easing of lockdown phase 2, public spaces, mandatory use of face masks, temperature checks, Physical distancing of 2 metres, Facility/business owners must provide hand washing facilities or sanitizers. (NAN)

AGF Abubakar Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, says no names were dropped in the case of Taraba alleged kidnap kingpin, Bala Hamisu, also known as Wadume.

He disclosed this in a statement issued by Dr Umar Gwandu, his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, in Abuja.

Malami said what his office did was to severe the charges in view of the unavailability of the soldiers who in their own case needed to be released by the military authorities, as they are undergoing military processes before their release.

The interest of justice requires and legitimately allowed for segmentation of the case in the interest of speedy trail, the AGF said.

He said it was in the interest of justice to accord speedy trial to the accused persons that were readily available to stand trial as against delaying at the expense of other co-accused persons, who in the peculiarity of the case, are not available for immediate arraignment.

It is a common practice that absence of a co-accused will not constitute impediment to the progress of a case.

Those available are entitled to fair trial and have their cases determined within a reasonable time as a matter of Constitutional rights.

Moreso, looking at the fact that the available accused persons are not to be held responsible for the unavailability of the co-accused persons, Malami said.

He said his office had taken steps to procure the availability of the co-accused and shall have them arraigned immediately upon procuring their availability by the military authorities. (NAN)

Botswana President, Mokgweetsi Masisi

Botswana brought back a strict coronavirus lockdown in its capital city, Gaborone, and surrounding areas after the southern African country recorded 12 new cases of the virus, a senior health official said on Friday.

Diamond-rich Botswana ended a 48-day national coronavirus lockdown late last month, allowing businesses and schools to reopen under controls, but its borders are still closed apart from for returning citizens and imports of essential goods.

But Malaki Tshipayagae, the countrys director of health services, said in a televised announcement that officials had recorded four new imported cases at its borders and eight at a private hospital in Gaborone, bringing cumulative cases to 60.

We are still to determine whether the hospital cases are local transmissions, Tshipayagae said.

From midnight today the greater Gaborone area will revert to extreme social distancing until further notice, where only essential services will be allowed to operate.

Before the new cases were announced, Botswana only had one active case of the coronavirus, while it recorded only one coronavirus death.

But the economy has been severely hurt, with real gross domestic product seen contracting 13 per cent this year while the budget deficit could more than double.
