A 400 level student of the Kogi State University, Anyigba has been shot to dead by unknown gunmen, The Nation reports.

According to the report, the student was in an exam hall when the gunmen invaded the area and gunned him down.

It was gathered that he was shot at the faculty of management sciences, banking and finance department.

The Kogi state police command and the university authorities are yet to confirm the veracity of the report.

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr said he has never compared QPR midfielder Eberechi Eze with Reading star Ovie Ejaria, as the West African country work to secure their services for the national team.

Both players, who ply their trade in the Championship, are of Nigerian descent and are eligible to play for either the Super Eagles or England - the country where they were born.

As part of efforts to secure their allegiance, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has held meetings with Eze, who has scored nine league goals this term.

Earlier this week, there were reports quoting Rohr saying he prefers Liverpool loanee Ejaria to Eze, but the German coach described it as false statement and calls for respect of his relationship with the Nigerian media.

"My attention has been drawn to some statements online that I have described Reading FC player Ovie Ejaria as a better player than Queens Park Rangers' Ebere Eze and so the NFF should get him in the team immediately," Rohr said.

"This is totally false and very disrespectful to both players. I never compare players and I have not asked the NFF to make any approach for the player in question.

"I will never ask the NFF publicly to approach any player for our team. We have our processes and it certainly doesn’t include sharing such information publicly.

"Furthermore I think there must be restraint in press statements purportedly quoting me and my person in terms of interviews.

"I share a very good relationship with the media in Nigeria but this must not be abused to the extent of misquoting me and making wrong claims about my person."

Rap superstar Cardi B appeared in court Tuesday over her alleged involvement in a New York strip club brawl, as her lawyers called for access to social media evidence currently available to prosecutors.

The 27-year-old Grammy winner known for hits including "I Like it" strode into the Queens courtroom wearing black patent Christian Louboutin stilettos, a black feathered train trailing behind her as she sported an enormous matching hat.

Having previously pleaded not guilty to attempted assault charges including two felonies linked to the case, she stood before the judge with her hands complete with talon-esque mint green nail extensions clasped behind her back.

The hearing was a "control date" for both sides to appear and discuss scheduling and legal issues, namely the defense's bid to obtain evidence they say is currently only available to the prosecution.

The artist's lawyers said they had submitted a subpoena to Facebook, which owns Instagram, attempting to obtain direct messages from the image-sharing platform involving the complainants -- but their request had been denied.

They did not go into detail on the content of the social media exchanges.

Judge Joseph Zayas requested both parties meet and reach an agreement for the defense to access the Instagram messages.

He set a hearing for the two other defendants involved in the case for January 17, but excused Cardi B from attending.

Insisting on his client's innocence, her lawyer Jeff Kern said "the case is not close to going to trial."

Asked repeatedly by journalists whether the rapper -- just returned from concerts in Ghana and Nigeria -- might settle the case out of court, both Kern and her other lawyer Drew Findling skirted the issue.

Born Belcalis Almanzar to a Dominican father and Trinidadian mother, Cardi B's meteoric rise began during her days as a stripper, when she carved out a social media personality on platforms including Instagram.

On August 29, 2018, Cardi B was in the Angels Strip Club in Queens when her entourage reportedly lobbed bottles, chairs and a hookah pipe, which police said bruised a female employee's legs.

Cardi B allegedly ordered an attack on two sisters working at the club because one of them was rumored to have slept with her husband, the rapper Offset.

Initially facing only misdemeanor charges, the rapper in April rejected a plea deal from the Queens district attorney's office.

That offer would have given the Grammy winner a conditional discharge if she pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor.

The new, more serious charges filed in June include two felony counts of attempted assault with intent to cause serious physical injury, according to the case docket.

At that time the rapper brought Findling -- the so-called "#BillionDollarLawyer" who has made a name for himself representing hip-hop stars in Atlanta, Georgia, the de-facto capital of rap -- onto her legal team.

"We continue to aggressively defend this case," Findling told journalists outside the court.

Chelsea survived a late scare to move into the Champions League knockout stages with victory over Lille at Stamford Bridge.

Whenever you walk into a local restaurant or have your favorite meal served, the urge to squelch hunger pangs or derive pleasure in the savory taste of the delicacy set before you will most likely take precedence over every other thing. Then, you do not get to think about what had gone into the food [you are about to munch] in the process of preparation; talk less of considering the hygienic standard observed by those preparing the meal. A call for caution
According to a report on the website of the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in every 10 persons, falls victim of food-poisoning every year with over 400,000 deaths being recorded. Focusing on the home-front; an article published by Punch online revealed that an estimated 1.5 million persons suffer food-poisoning every year. Putting all these together with the increasing incidence of chronic/terminal diseases - though terminal diseases are not about food-poisoning alone - one would agree that there is a need to be more cautious about what he/she eats. If possible, you should do a thorough check on the food and the ingredients used in making the meal. More so, the mode of cooking should also be carefully considered - I hope to discuss this in a subsequent session.

Armed men suspected to be robbers on Sunday night killed the wife of Managing Director Maerskline Gildas Tohouo and critically injured the man at their Luggard Drive, Ikoyi residence.

The couple resides at the Cul De Sac Compound, the same as former Head of State Ernest Shonekan which is off Oba Adeyinka Oyekan.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 9pm after their electrician/building maintenance man came to the apartment under the guise of fixing an electrical fault.

Unknown to the couple, the man had smuggled an accomplice into the building who he claimed was a guest at the party going on at an expatriate’s flat, the next neighbour.

Having successfully smuggled his accomplice in, they were alleged to have tampered with electricity into the Tohouo’s and then requested their permission to enter their apartment to resolve the power issue.

As soon as he was granted access, the suspect and his accomplice allegedly separated the man from his wife; forced the woman to transfer some money to their account, collected her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and there after stabbed her.

They allegedly forced her to drink acid before suffocating her with a willow in order to cover up their tracks.

Tohouo was said to have been forced to drink acid as well and also stabbed but was able to send a distress alert to Maersk security unit which the Chief Security Officer (CSO) intercepted and contacted Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu.

It was gathered that Odumosu led an operation to the couple’s resident, surrounded the area and commenced a search for the attackers alleged to be ransacking the house for valuables.

Another account indicated that it was an assassination attempt on the duo whose three children were left unhurt.

According to a source, they had earlier had a dispute over generator, fueling insinuations the attack on them was an inside job.

A situation report circulated among estate residents availed our Correspondent stated the suspects came in armed with two knives and locked the couple in separate rooms.

“Their electrician came with his friend and had accessed based on recognition. They locked both husband and wife in different rooms. Forced the wife to transfer some money to them and also collected her ATM card.

“Equally forced them to drink acid. Wife was suffocated with pillow afterwards. Husband had opportunity to call his CSO who alerted the police.

“A team led by the CP arrived the scene and surrounded the premises while the suspects were still there. They were both apprehended.”

When our correspondent visited the estate Monday, security men at the gate denied entry insisting there was no one at home.

They also turned down pleas to volunteer information as one of them locked the estate gate behind him as soon as a vehicle entered.

Food sellers and their customers were seen discussing the issue among them describing the suspect as a “very young man.”

Police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) confirmed the incident, adding that two suspects have been arrested.

Elkana identified those arrested as Olamide Goke and Ade Akanbi, adding that the case has been transferred to homicide unit, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti.

He insisted that the suspects had gone to the house to steal from the family and that the knives they used in stabbing them were recovered.

Ismaila Mustapha a.k.a Mompha has regained his freedom after perfecting the bail conditions handed to him by a Lagos High Court.

Mompha who was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 14 counts bordering on fraud, money laundering and running a foreign exchange business without the authorisation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was granted a N100m bail on Friday, November 29.

The Dubai-based Nigerian businessman was admitted to bail with one surety who must be a landed property owner by Justice Mohammad Liman, who ordered him to deposit his passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court and report at the EFCC office every fortnight to show that he has not left the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari and Delta state Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa have joined others around the world to mourn the demise of renowned German Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke, who died at 79 years.

Buhari described Bonnke’s demise as a great loss to Nigeria, Africa and the entire world.

Bonnke was founder of Chirst for all Nations (CfaN) and has preached the gospel in parts of Delta and other cities in Nigeria and was reputed to have led over 77 million people to Christ in his over 60 years in envangelical ministry.

The president’s condolence message was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Saturday.

President Buhari condoled with the government and people of Germany, family and friends of the great preacher and teacher of the Bible, and all his co-labourers in the vineyard.

He prayed that the Lord would comfort all those that mourn him.

Buhari said that Bonnke’s crusades in Nigeria, across Africa and the globe strongly accentuated the message of Jesus Christ.

The Nigerian leader added that Bonnke’s vision and zeal for the salvation of souls helped the world in understanding the power of love and kindness.

The president prayed that the Almighty God would accept the soul of the departed preacher.

He hoped that Bonnke’s legendary contributions to the body of Christ in teaching and writing would be remembered by posterity.

On his part, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, the governor said Evangelist Bonnke will be sincerely missed by those whose lives he impacted on with his over 60 years of evangelism in Africa, America and other parts of the world.

He expressed appreciation to the late Bonnke for being a role model to many preachers in Africa and urged other religious leaders to emulate the sacrifice and commitment to the people of Africa as exemplified by the late Evangelist.

“The news of the passing of Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke came to me as a shock but I am consoled by the fact that his was a life of great impact and abiding accomplishments.

“He was an incredible preacher of the gospel of Christ and I commend him for his contributions to the growth of evangelism in Africa and beyond.

“He will be sorely missed by those whose lives he impacted greatly in his over 60 years in evangelical ministry.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I express my profound condolences to his wife, Annie; his children – Kai-Uwe, Gabrielle, Susie – and grandchildren as well as all members of Christ for all Nations (CfaN).

From the moment the teasers were released in the early weeks of 2019, the focal point for action film, ‘Muna’ has been Adesua Etomi-Wellington.

Adesua moved audiences to see the film in the cinemas as the trailers did little justice to the plot and motivation of the movie. Instead, it focused on showing us quick shots of Adesua displaying martial arts skills.

The trailers show that a Nigerian actress can fight like a female James Bond and shoot realistically.

Audiences long for action and with ‘Muna’ promising great action sequences starring the Adesua Etomi, cinema halls are packed full.

Settling down as the first scene jumped on the screen, we see a young girl fighting for her peer, who is about to be sexually abused. The setting is a rural community where life is simple and easy.

It is the child-saviour we follow as she reminisced on the memories of her late parents. We see her grandmother – Onyeka Onwenu delivering not-so-great lines with excellent acting. The sentimentality continues as the story progresses until Mr Patrick enters the picture.

There is a small twist viewers do not expect. It is subtle but it sets the tone for the rest of the story. The consequences birth ‘Muna’ and introduces Adesua displaying her fighting skills.

The audience sits back at this point as the main reason for coming to see the film had begun.

This was also where the mixed feelings began. The story up to this point has been somewhat rushed and why the motivation could be understood, it did not sink well enough for the audience to look forward to the cold revenge.

This was almost salvaged when another sentimentality was built. In a subplot, Muna falls in love with Tony, the son of a major human trafficking kingpin. The transition between the romance scenes and the revenge plot lost synergy at some point, losing the audience on the trail.

At some point, the plot seemed stretched with the fight-action sequence coming in to save the day sometimes.

Still, Adesua does a fair job with her martial arts and shooting skills. It is not Bond-level but it is better choreographed than the average Nollywood fight scenes.

This did not in any way excuse her uni-directional acting. Her portrayal of emotions and will of the character is mediocre at best, not even her glaring fitness and beauty prep for the role could reach into the souls of the audience and draw the empathy her character craved.

In spite these, the film has an international feel to it and it is a fair attempt at the fan-favourite action thriller genre. There are several layers each character peels, although the stiff directing does not let it show well enough for the audience to come along.

The beauty of action thrillers is to plot a case the audience will die to solve. There are sentiments in ‘Muna’ that did not fly strong enough to build a case.

Away from the acting, the idea behind the film built an important case against child trafficking and the various forms it could take.

It explores the menace in deeper ways than the average person thought possible, especially the planned mafia style the operations takes. At this time, the fight against child trafficking is more pertinent.

All in all, ‘Muna’ is a testament that Adesua is more than just a romance lead or face actress. It shows that she can be stretched physically to play any character as long as the director understands the motivations of that character.

Audition for ‘ A call to Service’, an advocacy movie geared towards promoting core values, Acts and Bye-Laws of the National Youth Service Corps(NYSC), on Saturday holds in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that youths, including and corps members, seeking acting opportunities, in large number, took part in the audition for the new movie, which held at the Bolingo Hotels.

Mr Jairuspaul Osazuwa, the script writer and producer of the film, told NAN on the sideline that “A Call to Service” is conceived to promote, tribal tolerance, national peace and unity, which the NYSC scheme champions.

He explained that the audition was to discover corps members that had potential and passion for acting in line with the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship development ( SAED ) initiative of the scheme.

He noted that Nigeria as a nation has faced a lot of challenges in recent times, and it was imperative to promote things and initiatives that binds citizens inrespective of tribal and religious divides.

“This is the first time a project of this nature and magnitude will be carried out in the history of the NYSC scheme.

“We are glad is it happening now under the Leadership of Brig-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, who is the executive producer of the Film “A Call To Service”.

“The initiative is birthed by the Director-General of the NYSC and it is aimed at projecting the scheme and spread the message of peaceful co-existence and selfless service to fatherland.

“The film will also promote the Acts and Bye-Laws of the scheme by putting the book on screen for effective communication to all stakeholders,” he said.

Osazuwa explained that the star-studded film will feature upcoming and seasoned actors drawn from across the country, including Nollywood veterans Pete Edochie, Ali Nuhu, Imeh Bishop Omoh,( Okon ) Steve Ebor and Bruno Iwuoha.

He disclosed further that Jairuspaul Osazuwa and the D-G of the NYSC will also feature among the cast of ‘A Call to Service.”

According to him, the film will be shoot in locations in FCT, Kano and Delta , among others.

NAN reports that NYSC was created on 22 May 1973 , based on decree No. 24 as an avenue for the reconciliation, reconstruction, and rebuilding of the nation after the civil war.

It was created “with a view to encourage and develop common ties among the youth of Nigeria as well as promote national unity.

Under the scheme, young university graduates under the age of 30 are expected to serve their fatherland for one year, known as national service year.

They are posted to states other than their state of origin where they are expected to mix with people from different ethnic groups and learn the culture of the indigenes in the location they are posted to.

This action is aimed at bringing about unity in the country and help the youth appreciate other ethnic groups.

The Department of State Services (DSS) says circulation of a video on attempt to rearrest Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the RevolutionNow protest in a courtroom was a mischief.

Dr Peter Afunanya, the DSS Public Relations’ Officer (PRO) in a statement on Sunday in Abuja said the video was meant to serve as propaganda to bring the service to disrepute.

He said the statement was in response to the serial misinformation being circulated in the media on the involvement of the service in the incident that occurred on Dec. 6 at the Federal High Court.

Afunanya said Mr Femi Falana, SAN, Counsel to Sowore had during the court proceeding informed the judge that he was suspicious of a move by the service to rearrest his client.

He said the court discountenanced the suspicion, noting that the service was law abiding and would not engage in the act.

The PRO said it was on that ground that the court adjourned till February, 2020.

According to him, when Sowore stepped out of the court and sighted operatives of the service within the premises, he ran back into the courtroom.

“In a bid to shield him from an imaginary arrest, his uncontrollable supporters mobbed him while chanting “you can’t arrest him”, thus the pandemonium that ensued.

“A critical look at the videos in circulation would convince any objective viewer that there was no DSS personnel during the entire period Sowore crowd acted out its orchestrated drama.

“DSS personnel were never, at any time, involved in the incident. In actual fact, it was his people who seized him,” he said.

He said reports had shown that the court had adjourned peacefully before suddenly, the unruly crowd imported into the courtroom went into frenzy on suspicion that DSS was sighted at the court premises.

Afunanya said the eventual re-arrest of Sowore was effected outside the courtroom adding that his counsel had affirmed it.

According yo him, the DSS could not have invaded a courtroom including the one presided over by a respected Judge who is not only handling its case but whose order was unconditionally obeyed within a 24 hour ultimatum.

He said the service hold the judiciary in utmost respect and would continue to work with it for national peace and public safety. (NAN)

The Police in Niger have arrested one Mohammed Isa, 27, of Dogon Ruwa village of Bosso Local Government Area of the state, for allegedly shooting and killing his neighbour, Umaru Abubakar, 30, with a Dane gun.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Usman Adamu, disclosed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Saturday.

Adamu said that on Dec. 5 at about 18:30 hours the cattle of Umaru Abubakar, a cattle rearer and Fulani by tribe, entered and caused mischief in the farm of the suspect, a Gwari by tribe.

He said Isa shot the cattle rearer at the farm.

” The victim was rushed to Minna General Hospital where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty, ” he said.

The commissioner said the police command had already begun investigation into the matter after which the suspect would be charged to court.

He warned people against taking the law into their hands.

The United Kingdom occasionally has small tremors. The most recent “significant” quake was a 4.6 magnitude felt in Cwmllynfell in South Wales.

The strongest in the last 20 years was a 5.2 in Lincolnshire.

No fewer than 17 persons escaped death in a multiple crash involving three vehicles on the old Enugu-Onitsha expressway in Anambra.

The accident occurred on the Nkpor/Umuoji stretch of the road.

Mr Pascal Anigbo, the Public Enlightenment Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the crash to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the vehicles included a red Mitsubishi bus with registration number JJT920ZW, a white Hummer bus without registration number and a truck marked KPE686XA.

Anigbo attributed the cause of the accident to wrongful overtaking.

He said 17 persons including 10 males and seven females were involved in the crash while seven persons were injured.

“The Mitsubishi bus did wrongful overtaking and collided with an oncoming bus and the two buses collided with a truck.

“The injured victims had been taken to Crown hospital Nkpor,” he said.

The FRSC officer also said efforts were on to recover the vehicles and valuables. (NAN)

Two Nigerian students, who were in Croatia for a table tennis tournament, were mistakenly deported to a refugee camp in neighbouring Bosnia, the UK-based Guardian newspaper has reported.

Three weeks ago, the day before Abia Uchenna Alexandro and Eboh Kenneth Chinedu were due to return to Nigeria, they were stopped in Croatia's capital, Zagreb, by two police officers.

The police thought they were undocumented migrants, the Guardian says.

“We tried to explain who we were and that our documents were in the hostel, but they took us to a police station,” Mr Chinedu is quoted as saying. “They paid no attention to what we were saying.”

The students were then sent across the border to a refugee camp in Bosina.

Mr Chinedu told a Bosnian website that the Croatian authorities forced him to sign a document that he did not understand.

Eventually, volunteers in the camp managed to contact the table tennis competition organisers who confirmed that they had been in Croatia legally, the Guardian says.

The two men now have tickets to fly back home via Istanbul in Turkey.

Heracles striker Cyriel Dessers has revealed his desire to play for Nigeria at international level rather than his country of birth Belgium.

The 24-year-old, who was born in Leuven to a Belgian father and qualifies for Nigeria through his mother, is uncapped at youth level.

Top scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie with 11 goals, he was named the league's November Player of the Month after scoring six goals and producing three assists.

He admits he has a slim chance of playing for Belgium but reveals that his performance has caught the attention of Nigeria selectors and he is open to playing for the three-time African champions.

"There has already been contact with the Nigerian association. After the match against ADO Den Haag, the assistant from Nigeria sent me a message that I was doing well," Dessers told Belgian outlet Sporza.

"But that is not going to be easy either because there are 300 million Nigerians worldwide.

"I have never been to Nigeria, also because the political situation has not been so calm in recent years.

"The last year is only slightly better. I would like to go there and it would be twice as good to do that even if it's only to play a friendly game against Madagascar or Mauritius."

Regarded as a strong centre-forward and standing at a little over 6 feet tall, Dessers started his career at local Belgian side OH Leuven but only made a solitary senior appearance against Mons in March 2014.

He then joined local rivals Lokeren at the start of the 2014/15 season, where he enjoyed regular football and scored seven goals in 40 appearances across two seasons.

Dessers crossed the border to the Netherlands and joined second-tier side NAC Breda in the summer of 2016, helping the team to immediate promotion with 29 goals in 40 matches.

A spell at FC Utrecht led the towering player to Heracles this summer and his 13 goals in 16 appearances have brought praise from the fans and media back in Belgium.
