With the advent of social media, celebrities have never been closer to their fans now like never before. Through these social media platforms, celebrities can easily relate to their thousands and million fans around the globe in just seconds.

One of the easiest medium through which celebrities can reach out to their teeming fans is Twitter. It uses a follower-ship mechanism different from Facebook that uses friends. You can follow any known celebrity on Twitter just by clicking the follow button. By such approach, it is very common to see a celebrity or popular figure amassing thousands and millions of followers.

This is very common. It is the age of the social media.

Many Nigerian celebrities are on Twitter, just searching their names will bring out replica of names, but looking for the celeb name with a blue mark by the side tells you the real celebrity you're after.

    Celebrities snapchat username in Nigeria

Anyway we won't be looking at Twitter, but rather Snapchat, another platform for users to keep in touch with their celebrities and artists alike. According to Wikipedia, "Snapchat is an image messaging and multimedia mobile application. One of the principal concepts of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are only available for a short time before they become inaccessible. "

Snapchat user penetration in Nigeria is definitely lower than Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but it still has large usage and also most of our celebrities have user handles or rather usernames on Snapchat. Getting their usernames ain't easy since there are bound to be impersonations and Snapchat have no verification process currently in place, but painstakingly we present to you a few usernames of Nigerian / International celebrities on Snapchat.

kidnappers get the death penalty in lagos
The Lagos state Government today signed into law a bill stipulating death penalty and life sentences for kidnappers. This was signed by the Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode today at the State House. He reiterated that “The Prohibition of the Act of Kidnapping” would address the issue of insecurity in the state.

According to him, "Security is of utmost importance to our administration and we are confident that this law will serve as a deterrent to anybody who may desire to engage in this wicked act within the boundaries of Lagos state.

“The governor charged the judicial system in the state to execute the law to the letter and “make sure that any criminal caught faces the full wrath of the law.

"While we use this law to address the challenge of kidnapping and punish the criminals, we are also putting in place appropriate measures, particularly in our schools and other vulnerable targets, to prevent security breaches.”

Recently, Daily Post reported that the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Public Account, Hon Moshood Oshun, explained that the inclusion of a death penalty in the recently passed bill against kidnapping by the Assembly was to deter people of the state from taking up such vices.

40 ft container with 661 pump action rifles impounded by customs in lagos

Some Nigerian Customs officers are been held in connection with a 40 ft container impounded in Lagos with 49 boxes containing 661 pieces of Pump Action Rifles.

The 40-foot container, which was cleared at the Lagos port, was intercepted by Customs officials who were on patrol.

The officials were said to have discovered that although the manifest said the container had “steel doors and other merchandise goods,” boxes of the weapons were concealed deep in the container.

Our correspondent was told that the rifles, tagged, ‘JOJEFF made in Italy,’ could take up to 10 cartridges and could wreak a lot of havoc.

Other items found in the container were diapers, office cabinet, towels, mattresses, soft drinks, toiletries, among others.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.), during a press conference on Monday at the FOU, Zone A, Ikeja, said the container came from China, but was routed through Turkey to “cause confusion.”

He explained that three suspects, Oscar Okafor (importer), Mahmud Hassan (clearing agent) and Sadique Mustapha (escort) had been arrested.

He said the suspects were undergoing interrogations at the agency’s office and would not be paraded until their culpability was established.

He said, “On Sunday, January 22, 2017, the roving team of the NCS, Federal Operations Unit, while on information patrol intercepted a Mack truck with number plate, BDG 265 XG, conveying a one by 40-foot container with number: PONU/825914/3 along Mile 2 Apapa Road.

“The truck was immediately taken to the premises of FOU Zone A, Ikeja, where physical examination revealed 49 boxes containing a total of 661 pieces of pump action rifles concealed with steel doors and other merchandise goods. In the declaration of the items in the container, the importer concealed the weapons and declared them as still doors.

“These rifles are under absolute prohibition; therefore, their importation is illegal. The importation and transaction of pump-action is totally against the law of this nation.

“Such a deadly contravention of the law is even more unacceptable considering the fragile security situation in some parts of the country. We have kidnappers and armed robbers and there is insurgency, it is more intense. There are also the cattle rustlers, who are also using the same weapon. So, they are deadly.”

Ali explained that investigations had commenced into how the truck escaped the vigilance of Customs officers at the port, adding that all officers involved in the clearance were in detention.

He noted that the importer, exporter, escort, officials of the agency and others, would be prosecuted at the end of investigations.

Apostle Johnson Suleman, the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, on Sunday challenged the DSS and Federal Government to compel the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to produce the Fulani herdsmen he gave money in order to stop the southern kaduna killings.

He said El-Rufai confessed openly that he indeed paid some herdsmen to stop the killings which has brought so much agony and pain to the people of southern kaduna in the latest sectarian clash. The clash between the people of southern kaduna and fulani herdsmen dates as far back as 1993.

Suleman, who has been officially invited by the Department of State Security (DSS) to appear before them on the 30th of January, 2017, said the governor should be made to answer charges of murder and other related crimes against humanity. This was contained in a press release by his media aide and communications Adviser, Phrank Shaibu.

He said naming the beneficiaries of the money would disabuse the minds of Nigerians of the conflict that Christians were the targets of incessant attacks by Fulani herdsmen and will also prove the sincerity of the Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The governor of Kaduna State confessed that he paid money to some Fulani herdsmen as compensation to stop the killings in Southern Kaduna. That means he knows those who have committed atrocities against Christians. El-Rufai must be made to produce them to answer charges of murder and other crimes. El-Rufai can be safely regarded as an apologist of the herdsmen and with a fact.

He quoted a tweet credited to El-Rufai's twitter handle, dated July 12, 2012, ‘We will write this for all to read. Anyone, soldier or not that kills the Fulani takes a loan repayable one day no matter how long it takes.”

The Federal Government, Suleman said, would be engaging in double standards by asking the DSS to invite him while allowing El-Rufai to move about freely.

    This is a developing story...

Banks play a crucial role in the economics and life of the citizens of every nation and that's why it's failure has adverse effects and is "generally considered to be of more importance than the failure of other business firms" - Wikipedia.

Banks facilitate economic sustenance, create enabling environments for businesses to thrive and grow, create job employments, helps the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of every nation, helps investors with capital, assists small medium scale enterprises, facilitate loans and more importantly warehouse a legally recognised medium of payment which is key for meeting a financial obligation.

This legally and globally recognised medium of payment is called "Money" or a "Legal Tender"

The lifeline of every bank is depositors funds and also creditors funds. When the bank fail to provide depositors access to their funds, the bank has failed in it's primary obligations as a bank. This often creates a panic, and most times, it's this panic that actually kills the bank faster than it's incapacity.

The creditors funds help the banks startup, help with liabilities and serve as a capital base for it's banking operations.

In Nigeria, the minimum capitalization for any of it's bank is N25 Billion Naira. This minimum capitalization was introduced in 2005. This led to a lot of consolidation in the Banking sector.

In the words of the then Central Bank Governor Prof. Charles Soludo, "Consolidation of banking institutions through mergers and acquisitions. Banks that do not meet the minimum paid up capital by end of December 2005 or which remain un-sound/marginal would be liquidated by January 2006", (Banks Consolidation and N25bn Recapitalization -Another Perspective By Bello Abdullahi.)

According to the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, the following list of 45 banks are termed Closed Financial Institutions.

By terming them as closed, they've had their licences revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria, between 1994 and 2006. The Federal High Court issued orders for them to be wound up and appointed the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) as Liquidator of the banks.

The Corporation is currently winding up the banks.

Here is the 4th part of this series Agro Business in Nigeria Part IV

Today we shall be profiling the agricultural products and raw materials that are fairly abundant in Nigeria and which has demand outside the shores of this country and also their location locally.

    Raw Cashew Nuts Exports Profile

    Description
Cashew (Anacardium Occidentale L.) is a tree crop of considerable economic importance to Nigeria and other tropical countries. Apart from being a source of useful products and byproducts for feed, medicinal and industrial applications, cashew gives also a useful shade, while ornamental and alley trees are suitable for the control of soil erosion, particularly for the protection of watersheds and dams.

    Harvest
Cashew nut setting begins in the middle of dry season, while harvesting takes place mainly in February of March. The entire harvest period occupies about 16 weeks. In the Eastern and Western parts of the country, where quality cashew nuts are grown, nuts are allowed to drop to the ground before they are collected. This practice ensures that only ripe nuts are collected. Nuts normally fall to the ground with their apples attached; the two are normally separated with a twisting action during collection. The remnants of the apple flash adhering to the nuts are removed with a sharp knife. After picking, the nuts are dried in the sun for 2 to 3 days, to reduce their moisture content to about 12%. Properly dried nuts are packed in jute bags and can be kept for 6 to 10 months, if stored in suitable condition.

    Location
Major cashew growing areas in Nigeria are, by order of importance: Enugu, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Ebonyi and Cross River states in the eastern part of the country; Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Ogun States in the Western part, as well as Kwara, Kogi, Nassarawa, Benue, Taraba, Niger in the Middle Belt and Sokoto and Kebbi states in the North West part of the country. The majority of export quality nuts come from Western and Eastern parts of the country.

    Specification
According to SGS (quality inspectors), the standard for raw cashew nuts, unshelled, is specified as follows:

    • Nut count: 180 – 200 per kg

    • Moisture content: 8 – 10% max

    • Defective nuts: 15% max

    • Float Rate: 18%max

    • Admixture 0.25% max

    • Foreign matter 0.25% max

    • KoR: 48-50 lbs/bag

    Uses
The cashew nut is a popular snack, and its rich flavor means that it is often eaten on its own, lightly salted or sugared. In addition to this, cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL), a byproduct of processing cashew, is mostly composed of anacardic acids. These acids have been used effectively against toot abscesses due to their lethality to bacterial.

    Export Market
The major buyers of cashew nut from Nigeria are mainly India and Singapore. Smaller percentage goes to Europe.

    Cashew Nut Specification in Detail
The crop season in West Africa is from March to June. There is not a general standard for cashew nuts but some parameters can establish the quality of the cashew and the appreciation on the market.

    • Out-turn/Yield: It is the quantity of cashew kernel that can be obtained after decorticating (remove the shell of a cashew nut) 80kg of raw cashew nuts. The count is in pounds per 80kg . A good out turn is from 43 – 48 lbs. An excellent out turn is from 48 – 55 lbs.
    • Nut count: It is the number of raw cashew nuts pert kg
      170 excellent
      180 - 190 very good
      190 – 200 good
    • Moisture/Humidity: For export 12% and less, otherwise there are risks for the goods during the shipping
    • Foreign matter : 5% max
    • Float rate: This is the total number of cashew nuts that will float when poured into water. A good float rate is 18% max

The Nigerian Federal Government will starting from January 2017 stop importation of brand new & Tokunbo used vehicles through the Nigerian Land Borders. This is as a result of a new Prohibition Order enacted by the Nigerian Federal Government and sent to the Nigerian Customs Service.

This order will take effect as from January, 2017.

The Nigerian Customs through it's spokesperson, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, advised importers of vehicles through the land borders to utilise the grace period up till December 31 to clear their vehicles landed in neighbouring countries’ ports.

One of such major ports for vehicles importation is the Seme Port, where Ships laden with imported vehicles berth at Cotonou and then vehicle importers drive them in through Badagry Lagos and Ogun State respectively.

This move by the Federal Government will surely draw mixed reactions from the Nigerian populace who are currently passing through a bitter recession, the first of it's kind in 20 years. This ban also follows the ban on importation of rice through the land borders since April, 2016.

How this new prohibition will help Nigeria's automobile policy is yet to be seen, but will definitely help local producers like Innoson Vehicles and Manufacturing Industries, that have championed the course for local content production capability in automobile production.

Foreign vehicle manufacturers have been setting up assembly plants in Nigeria, examples are Nissan which was launched during the past Government of President Goodluck Jonathan.

A Director of NADC ( National Automotive Design and Development Council), Mr. Aminu Jalal, speaking on behalf of the government, added that it was a means of controlling the influx of used vehicles, popularly called ‘Tokunbo’, into the country.

Mostly, these Tokunbo vehicles fail road worthy tests, the Government will like to protect the lives of it's citizens in this regard and prevent Nigeria from been a dumping ground for old and used vehicles.

Stakeholders in the automotive industry had earlier called for strict regulation of the importation of vehicles, noting that poor implementation of the auto policy was driving down the volume of their products.

The Nigerian automobile policy prescribed the imposition of 70 per cent tariff on imported cars, both old and new ones.
