No fewer than 550 pilgrims from Niger who performed this year’s hajj in Saudi Arabia on Saturday escaped death at the Minna International Airport as the Max Airline plane conveying them back to Nigeria skidded off the runway.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), an authoritative source at the airport who pleaded anonymity, said the incident occurred at about 5.00am on Saturday.

He said that the aircraft, a Boeing 744 with registration number 5N/DBK, developed a technical fault which resulted in its forced landing.

The source said that the development caused damage to one of the four engines of the aircraft.

He said part of the tarmac and facilities at the airport were also damaged by the aircraft as a result of the accident, adding that the passengers were rushed out of the plane after it halted off the runway.

“Nobody died, but I have never seen this type of thing in my life. Only God saved them from a terrible disaster.

“The fire that would have followed would have spread to all parts of the airport because we don’t have fire fighting vehicles in this airport,” he said.

NAN also reported that officials of the Accident Investigation Bureau from Lagos have inspected the partly damaged aircraft, after which they went into a closed door meeting.

Hajiya Hassana Isah, Public Relations Officer of the state Pilgrims Welfare Board, confirmed the incident to journalists, but did not give details.

Isah assured that the development would not affect the return journey of the over 2, 000 pilgrims from the state still in Saudi Arabia.

Teenager Bianca Andreescu became Canada’s first Grand Slam singles champion Saturday with a rollercoaster 6-3, 7-5 win over 23-time major champion Serena Williams in the US Open final.

The 19-year-old Andreescu became the youngest Grand Slam winner since Maria Sharapova at the 2006 US Open, handing Williams a fourth consecutive defeat in the final of a major to again deny her a record-equaling 24th Slam title.

“It’s so hard to explain in words but I’m just beyond grateful and truly blessed. I’ve worked really, really hard for this moment,” said Andreescu, who had won just two Grand Slam matches ahead of her US Open main draw debut.

    0_1567912222866_Serena-rues-another-missed-opportunity--e1567900256535.jpg

“This year has been a dream come true. Being able to play on this stage against Serena, a true legend of the sport, is amazing.

“It wasn’t easy at all. I tried to prepare my best like I do every match, I tried not to focus on who I’m playing. I’m really proud of how I dealt with everything.”

Andreescu tied Monica Seles, who lifted the 1990 Roland Garros trophy in her fourth major, for the record as the fastest player to win her first Slam title in the Open era.

Williams, 37, suffered a second finals loss in a row at Flushing Meadows, after a 2018 defeat against Naomi Osaka best remembered for a furious tirade against chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

“Bianca played an unbelievable match, I am so proud and happy for you. It was incredible tennis out there. If anyone could win this, outside of Venus, I’m happy it’s Bianca,” Williams said.

Appearing in a 33rd Grand Slam final, and fourth since the last of her 23 major titles, Williams made an inauspicious start at Arthur Ashe Stadium by conceding her opening service game with successive double faults.

Andreescu, who wasn’t even born when Williams won her maiden Slam at the 1999 US Open, responded with a comfortable hold, a pattern that repeated itself until the Canadian threatened to run away with the opening set.

Serving at 2-4, Williams erased five break points with a combination of aces and booming groundstrokes but Andreescu was knocking on the door once more as the American served to stay in the set.

A forehand winner earned the youngster a set point, and Williams duly her gifted her the opener with another double fault.

Andreescu had failed to even reach the main draw at Flushing Meadows the past two years, twice falling in the first qualifying round, and her confidence continued to flow as she surged 2-0 ahead in the second — Williams again doubled-faulting on break point.

That prompted forlorn looks from the Williams box, where her close friend Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was seated alongside sister Venus and fashion titan Anna Wintour.

The American carved out four opportunities to hit back the following game, benefiting from a huge stroke of luck when a forehand brushed the tape and trickled over to haul herself back on serve.

Undeterred, Andreescu promptly regained the initiative with another break and looked to be marching towards the title when she followed a routine hold by again breaking the Williams serve for a 5-1 lead.

Andreescu brought up championship point in the ensuing game, but Williams smacked a forehand winner to stay alive and then rattled off 14 of 17 points to peg her opponent back at 5-all.

“I was just fighting at that point, just trying to stay out there a little bit longer,” said Williams, feeding off the energy of 24,000 cheering fans as she briefly sparked hopes of an incredible comeback.

“The fans started cheering so hard it made me start playing a little bit better and fighting a little bit more.”

The Canadian stemmed the bleeding by holding for 6-5 and an errant Williams backhand handed Andreescu two more shots at the title. Williams saved the first with an ace but Andreescu secured victory on the next with a blistering forehand return.

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is stepping up his secessionist campaign as he warned Nigerian governors owing workers to stay at home.

He said they should not bother to leave Nigeria if they are owing workers as they would be embarrassed with picketing anywhere they go.

He spoke on Ben TV in an interview, saying his group would continue to hold Nigerian politicians accountable for the services they were elected to render by the electorate.

He said governors in Nigeria who have refused to pay their workers’ salaries, but travelling aimlessly across the world would be stopped from doing so.

“Very soon, any governor who has not paid salaries will not come abroad anymore. If you owe salaries you’re not allowed to go abroad anymore. “You bank teachers’ salaries, you bank the salaries of pensioners, you cannot come abroad anymore.

“So this is just the beginning. “We’ll not attack them. We’ll just ask them questions. It is called picketing. It’s allowed within the ambit of democratic rules. “So, if we see you, we’ll ask you what you’ve been doing with teachers’ salaries, nurses’ salaries and why you’ve not been paying people and what are you doing here? “Any governor owing workers once we catch you abroad you’ll tell us what you’ve been doing with the salaries you’re supposed to pay.

“There’s no time on this earth that any process of agitation will be palatable for everyone or easy for everyone to buy into. When Nnamdi Azikiwe was campaigning for Nigeria to be free from colonial rule, he was sent to prison.

“Many people felt he was radical and declined to associate themselves with him. But in the end, he succeeded in freeing Nigeria not knowing that we are jumping from the frying pan to fire.

“Awolowo was the same thing. He was a firebrand. Many people didn’t like his approach from the beginning, but on reflection and review of what he did and how he managed to accomplish them, people have come to understand that he meant well for his people.

“So, now that these things are happening, most people would not appreciate it, but I’m sure that in many years to come, historians will look back to what’s happening today.”

Meghan Markle supported her good friend, tennis star Serena Williams at the U.S. Open Finals on Saturday.

The royal mom was all smiles in Williams’ box at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where she sat in front of Anna Wintour and behind Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian, to watch her friend play against Bianca Andreescu in the final.

The outing marks the Duchess of Sussex’s first trip overseas without her 4-month-old son, Archie. On Friday, Meghan, 38, made an unexpected last-minute trip aboard a commercial flight from London, PEOPLE confirmed. Prince Harry remained home with their son in Windsor.

The royal’s last trip to America was in February for her baby shower with close friends.

Meghan first met Williams at the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami where they immediately hit it off. Last summer, the tennis pro and her husband Alexis Ohanian, who both attended the royal wedding, joined Meghan to watch Harry compete in a polo match in Ascot, England. Williams also helped throw a baby shower for her friend in N.Y.C.earlier this year.

In July, Meghan and some friends watched Serena’s match at the Wimbledon championships. She then joined sister-in-law Kate Middleton for the women’s final.

Williams said that having Meghan’s support and friendship “is great,” telling reporters during her post-match press conference in July: “She’s such a great friend and a great person as well. And always positive, no matter what.”

The tennis star continued, “It’s so good to have people like that, just to know,” adding that Meghan, 37, is “such a fan of the sport.”

In a recent interview, the tennis star shared that she is refraining from offering parenting advice to Meghan for now.

“I never pass on words of wisdom because I feel like everyone, when they have a kid, especially when you just have a baby, it is so difficult to just be,” Williams told BBC Breakfast ahead of Wimbledon. “And it’s just like, get through the first three months, four months, and then we can talk.”

Tiffany Haddish is nothing but positive when it comes to Kevin Hart's recovery.

The Night School actress gave ET an update on her close friend and frequent co-star's health status, following his serious car crash last week.

"He's OK. He's doing fine," Haddish told ET at the Harper's Bazaar ICONS event at The Plaza Hotel in New York City on Friday. "As far as I know, from the last I heard, he's fine."

Expressing that Hart will be back to normal soon, Haddish added, "He's already walking. He's good."

While Haddish did note that Hart's "back gonna hurt," she couldn't help but take a dig at her buddy for previously making fun of her when she was injured.

"He was making fun of me because I tore my meniscus," she recalled. "I was wearing a boot while we were doing press for Secret Life of Pets 2. I had a sleeve on my leg, a brace, and he was making fun of me, talking about, 'Tiffany, you ain't gonna get no man. Ain't no man gonna want you with a brace on your leg. You need to get the surgery.' And I said, 'I don't have time to get surgery. I'm gonna let my body do what it do and heal itself.'"

"And look, I'm rocking high heels and I'm walking. I might walk with a limp, but call me a pimp," she jokingly added before sending Hart a message. "And now I'm gonna make fun of you. When you get back, moving good, Kevin, I'm coming for you. I'm coming for your back."

As ET previously reported, Hart was in the passenger seat when he was involved in a car crash in his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda on Sept. 1, near Calabasas, California. A source told ET on Friday that he fractured his spine in three places.

    0_1567910312917_tiffany1.jpg

"He has a long road of recovery ahead but is doing well and [Hart] hopes he will be released from the hospital soon," the source said.

Meanwhile, a second source told ET that Hart had been "heavily sedated" since undergoing surgery.

"Kevin's spinal injuries are very serious, he sustained several fractures and had no choice but to have surgery as soon as possible," the source explained. "Since the surgery he has been heavily sedated. The physicians are doing everything they can to keep him out of pain."

"The family isn't ready to talk about it and want privacy at the moment," the source added of how the comedian's family is coping. "They also don’t want people to worry, so [his wife] Eniko has put on a strong face and is saying he is doing well, but it’s very serious. He has suffered a great deal and has a long road ahead."
