A 54th minute own goal by Olawale Abisoye on Sunday gave hosts Kwara United Football Club of Ilorin a 1-0 win over visiting MFM FC of Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the win was in a Group A Match Day 14 fixture of the 2018/2019 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

MFM FC nearly got an equaliser with fifteen minutes to go, when Akuneto Chijioke connected Zikiyes throw-in but Chinedu Nwanze cleared his line.

The hosts kept their nerves during the closing stages of the game to hang on to the maximum three points.

MFM FCs coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, who conceded defeat in his reactions to the result, said he was happy with his players performance.

The better side won. They are very strong at home. We came here with a game plan to at least pick a point, but our performance wasnt bad Ilechukwu said.

The Lagos State Police Commands Gender Unit has arrested a 44-year-old man and his 19-year-old son for allegedly raping and impregnating a 13-year-old girl.

The Lagos State Police Commands spokesperson, DSP Bala Elkana, said in a press statement that the case was reported at the gender unit of the command by the mother of the victim.

He said that the unit received a complaint that a minor was being defiled by her sisters husband identified as Kabiru Oke of No. 1, Olatikupo St, Egbeda and his son, Oke Faruq,19, living within the same premises with his father.

He said that the girl had been living with the suspects for some time now, and that her sisters husband started having carnal knowledge of her since last October.

The second suspect, being the son of the first suspect, started having unlawful carnal knowledge of the same minor on Jan. 10, 2019.

The suspects have constantly threatened to kill the victim if she ever tells anybody about the affairs. The victim exposed them when her mother suspected some changes in her and discovered that she was pregnant, Elkana said.

The PPRO said that the girl had been taken to Mirabel Centre by the gender unit of the police command for medical examination, while the two suspects had been arrested and charged to a magistrate court .

The case was, however adjourned till May 13, 2019 while the suspects were remanded in Kirikiri Prisons. he said.

In a related development, the PPRO said that one Marainerume Alfred, 45 ,of Oke Itunu Church Close, Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos had also been arrested for defiling a 14-year-old girl.

He said the matter was also reported to the gender unit of the police command by the mother of the survivor.

The complainant stated that they were living in the same street with the suspect.

That the suspect usually invited the survivor into his shop while on her way from school, along Iyana Ejigbo road, where he was selling Nigerian Films and would have unlawful sexual intercourse with her.

The suspect committedc the crime between May 2018 and March 27, 2019.

The suspect in his statement to the police said that he turned the survivor into his sex partner after he divorced his wife in May 2018.

The matter was discovered on March 27 , 2019 at 2p.m., by the survivors grandmother who perceived some odours from the survivors body when she returned home and subjected her to questioning.

The survivor opened up to her grandmother and narrated the whole story.

She further stated that, the suspect threatened that she would die if she ever disclosed it to her parents.

That the suspect usually gave her some drugs to take and equally mixrf salt and water for her to take after sex to prevent her from getting pregnant.

The PPRO said , Investigation is ongoing, and the suspect will be charged to court for defilement after its completion.

Institute of Forensic and Investigative Auditors of Nigeria, CIFIAN, has raised the alert over N25 billion cyber fraud recorded in the nations financial institution in the last five years

The Pro-tem President of CIFIAN, Dr Victoria Enape, who disclosed this, weekend, during the induction ceremony of about 120 members in Abuja, expressed concern over the increased volume of financial frauds in the country.

She said CIFIAN was worried about the development, which is inimical to the development of any country, warning that: If nothing is done about it now, the future generation will have nothing to fall back on.

Tasking the newly inducted members, she said: We are commissioning all members to go and be good ambassadors of CIFIAN in their various organisations to ensure that jointly we prevent fraud, corruption and cyber crimes in Nigeria and stop further loss of billions of naira as being recorded in the last five years.

As you are aware, the recorded fraud volume in Nigeria financial institution due to cyber increased dramatically to about N25 billion in the past five years.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), says it will soon commence probe of banks over stamp duties collection as it expects to recover more than N100 billion from the probe.

A statement by Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, the commissions spokesperson on Sunday in Abuja, however, did not specify when the probe would commence.

He, however, said the probe would involve a forensic investigation of the funds that had so far been collected as stamp duty by 22 Deposit Money Banks (DMB) from 2000 to 2018.

According to him, RMAFC is the only constitutional body vested with the powers to monitor all revenue accruals into the Federation Account.

To this end, the commercial banks had been deducting the sum of N50 on every deposit with a value of N1,000 and above since January 2000.

At the moment, the total sum of N33 billion had been realised through the collection of stamp duties which falls far below the expectation of stakeholders.

It is expected that at the end of the exercise, over N100 billion would be recovered, he said.

Mohammed added that the commission had concluded arrangements to engage the services of reputable forensic audit firms to carry out the probe.

He said that the probe would be comprehensive as it would cover the affixed stamp used on cheque books prior to the introduction of electronic transactions.

He also said that if the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), was properly repositioned through appropriate legal and regulatory framework, and the introduction of appropriate technology, the agency could generate over N500 billion.

Therefore, the commission is using this medium to appeal to the National Assembly and the Federal Government to initiate measures for the amendment of the NIPOST Act to enable it to expand the economy and attract more revenue to the federation, he said.

Mohammed said that in a similar development, RMAFC had also embarked on the reconciliation exercise of signature bonuses and other miscellaneous revenues from the oil and gas industry to enable the commission engage other stakeholders.

This, he said, was with a view to reducing revenue leakages and enhance remittance into the federation account.

He added that the commission, therefore, seeks the support of stakeholders, especially the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to enable it succeed in the exercise.

RMAFC was established to monitor accruals into and disbursement of revenue from the Federation Account, review from time to time, the revenue allocation formula and principles in operation to ensure conformity with changing realities.

President Muhammadu Buhari has departed Amman Jordan for Dubai, to begin the second leg of his Middle East visit.

In Jordan, he attended the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa, where he spoke on the vast investment opportunities in Nigeria and x-rayed the Boko Haram rebellion in the North east as a manifestation of lack of economic and social inclusion.

Buhari told WEF that his administration is determined to industrialise Nigeria, leveraging on the nations comparative advantage and recognising the private sector as the agent of growth.

He described the Middle East as a natural partner in the development agenda, urging African and the Middle East countries to focus on policies that would deliver shared economic prosperity for their citizens.

While in Dubai, Buhari will attend the Annual Investment Meeting, which opens today and ends on Wednesday.

Passengers and Staff at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport were thrown into confusion on Monday afternoon as fire broke out on the arrival section of the Airport.

The cause of the fire was not known as at the time of filling this report but a source at the Airport said that there was ongoing renovation at the arrival hall, which was totally razed.

Reports say the inferno, which raged for about one hour, started around 2:10 p.m.

It took the efforts of men from the Fire service and airport workers to put off the fire.

The source said:

It was a mysterious fire outbreak. It happened at the arrival section of the airport where the authority was carrying out renovation work.

It would have caused bigger havoc but for the arrival of men of the fire service.

It started around 2:10 p.m., and raged for 50 minutes. It damaged equipment and infrastructure but people assisted in savaging the situation.

When contacted the Police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that he has not being officially briefed.

Nine persons suspected of being involved in train ticket racketeering have been arrested in Abuja and Kaduna in sting operation by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Five of the suspects were arrested at Idu and Kubwa stations in Abuja on Saturday. They were identified as Clement Zakka, Udim Sunday Samson, Adams Danladi, Otitomoni Omobolanle and Hassan Dauda.

The Commission swung into action after receiving an intelligence report alleging that some group of people at the Idu and Kubwa train stations have been racketeering train tickets.

Their action made it difficult for passengers to have direct access to tickets, thus sabotaging government efforts in ensuring easy transportation across the country.

They will soon be charged to court.

Arrests of suspected racketeers were also made at Rigasa station in Kaduna on Sunday.

Investigations revealed that some members of staff of the station in connivance with some touts were defrauding unsuspecting travellers and selling train tickets at a higher rate. For economy ticket of N1,300 /N1,500 they were selling at a rate of N2,000 to N5,000 and for First Class which goes for N2,500 was being sold for between N7,000 to N15,000.

Three persons, including a staff of the station and two touts have been arrested.

The Station Manager, Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Parcel Booking Officer of the Kaduna Railway Station have also been invited for questioning.

Sen. Ali Ndume has insisted on contesting for the Senate Presidency even after meeting with the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting between the vice-president and Ndume lasted for over an hour.

The agenda of the meeting was unknown to State House correspondents, but NAN learnt that it was not unconnected with the forthcoming election of a new leadership for the ninth National Assembly (NASS).

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has endorsed the candidature of Sen. Ahmed Lawan for the seat of Senate President and Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila for the position of Speaker of the House Representatives.

But, Ndume has continued to insist to contest for the seat of senate president.

The senator, who declined to comment on the outcome of his meeting with the vice-president, simply told the correspondents that he was on consultative mission to the State House.

Sudanese protesters on Monday sought talks with the army on forming a transitional government, as thousands braved a deadly crackdown by security agents for a third day to urge the military to back them.

The country has been rocked by more than three months of protests that erupted over a hike in bread prices before transforming into nationwide demonstrations against President Omar al-Bashirs iron-fisted 30-year rule.

At the biggest rally so far, thousands of protesters have since Saturday been camped out around the army headquarters in Khartoum which also houses Bashirs residence and the defence ministry.

They are calling on the military to protect them and to back calls for Bashir to resign.

When the army is here, we have no fear, protesters flashing victory signs chanted as military vehicles with soldiers fanned out around the complex, onlookers said.

Riot police have fired tear gas at the protesters, but they have failed to dislodge them.

Officials say 38 people have died in protest-related violence since December.

Interior Minister Bushara Juma said seven protesters died on Saturday when forces tried to disperse them and 15 were wounded along with 42 members of the security forces. In all, 2,496 protesters were arrested.

Defence Minister General Awad Ibnouf vowed to preserve the security and stability of Sudan.

Sudans armed forces understand the reasons for the demonstrations and is not against the demands and aspirations of the citizens, but it will not allow the country to fall into chaos, Ibnouf told the top brass at a meeting, according to the official SUNA news agency.

History will not forgive if the armed forces let the country lose its security.

The group spearheading the protests on Monday appealed to the army for talks on forming a transitional government.

We call on the Sudanese armed forces to talk directly with the Alliance for Freedom and Change for facilitating the peaceful process of forming a transitional government, said Omar el-Digeir, a senior member of the group.

Digeir said the protest organisers had also formed a council to initiate talks with security forces and the international community aimed at agreeing a transition that gives power to a transitional government that represents the wish of the revolution.

We reiterate our peoples demand that the head of the regime and his government have to immediately step down, Digeir said.

Reading from a statement, he also called on the armed forces to withdraw their support for a regime that has lost its legitimacy and to support the peoples alternative for a transition to a civilian democratic government.

Since protests erupted across Sudan in December agents of the powerful National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) and riot police have cracked down on demonstrators, but the army has not intervened.

Soldiers put up barricades in streets near the army compound after reinforcements of intelligence agency members and riot police arrived in the early hours, witnesses told AFP.

After that, security forces began firing tear gas at protesters, one said on condition of anonymity.

Gunshots were also heard, witnesses said, but it was unclear who fired.

Some activists on the ground said it was the army shooting in the air, but this could not be confirmed independently.

Protest organisers urged the military to protect the demonstrators.

We want you, the young officers and soldiers, to remain committed to the role of the national army, which is of protecting the people, said the Sudanese Professionals Association.

A few hours later security personnel again fired tear gas at the demonstrators, witnesses said.

Protest organisers urged the residents of Khartoum and nearby areas to join the demonstrators.

Crowds of people carrying food and water were later seen walking towards the complex to take part in the protest, according to onlookers.

Some companies have told employees not to come into work until further notice.

The rally outside the army headquarters has been the largest since protests began on December 19 in the central town of Atbara, quickly spreading to the capital and towns and cities across the east African country.

New research has linked both red and processed meat to a higher risk of certain health conditions, such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, and even some cancers.

Previous studies have examined the effects of eating moderate-to-high amounts of meat on mortality. However, the impact of consuming a small amount has remained largely untested.

Researchers at Loma Linda University Health in California aimed to address this imbalance in a new study, according to a report by
We wanted to take a closer look at the association of low intakes of red and processed meat with all-cause, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer mortality compared to those who didnt eat meat at all, states lead author Saeed Mastour Alshahrani.

The teams findings suggest that eating small amounts of red and processed meat could increase a persons risk of death.

Another study provides more evidence that a plant-based diet is healthful.

The researchers used data from people who took part in the Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2).
Between 2002 and 2007, this cohort study recruited close to 96,000 Seventh-day Adventists living in the U.S. and Canada.

Adventists are an interesting group for scientists looking into factors relating to the diet. About half of these believers are vegetarian, and those who do choose to eat meat consume very little of it.

To see whether meat consumption had any effect on mortality, researchers analyzed two factors. The first was the cause of death of more than 7,900 Adventists over an 11-year period. The second was a dietary assessment of the same individuals using food frequency questionnaires.

The researchers noted that meat intake was low. Among the people who reported consuming meat, 90 percent ate 2 ounces or less of red meat per day.

When they evaluated the deaths, the investigators found that cardiovascular disease was responsible for almost 2,600 of them, while more than 1,800 deaths related to cancer.

The results, which feature in the journal Nutrients, showed that there was an association between the consumption of a combination of red and processed meats and a higher risk of both total and cardiovascular disease deaths. Processed meat alone did not show a similar trend.

Certain groups appeared to be more susceptible to specific meat types. For example, unprocessed red meat was significantly related to a risk of all-cause mortality for white people but not for black people. When the researchers looked specifically at the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality, they noted that this was only significant among women and black people.

Black people and women also had an increased risk of all-cause mortality from eating processed meat. However, the team only identified a link between processed meat consumption and cardiovascular disease in women.

The researchers did not report any significant findings relating to cancer, but they noted that other studies have found evidence of a relationship between meat intake and this disease. As a result, they suggest that this association may only become apparent with higher meat consumption.

The authors of the new study believe that their work supports previous conclusions. Our findings give additional weight to the evidence already suggesting that eating red and processed meat may negatively impact health and lifespan, comments Michael Orlich, Ph.D., co-author of the study and co-director of AHS-2.

The study also shows something new by demonstrating that eating even a small amount of red and processed meat could be worse for health than eating none.

The study has both strengths and limitations. Researchers adjusted the results for various factors, including obesity, physical activity, and low intake of fruit and vegetables.

To strengthen the findings, they also took into account specific dietary factors, such as intake of dairy, whole grains, and legumes. It also helped that relatively few of the participants smoked or drank alcohol.

However, the study relied on questionnaires, which could cast doubt over the results because people may not recall consuming food that they eat very little of or consume irregularly.

More research will be necessary to support the findings of this study. It is also still unclear precisely what causes red and processed meat to lead to adverse health outcomes.
