Britain has begun the search for the next boss of its central bank ahead of Carneys departure in nine months time.
As you might have noticed, I do like it when women are in senior positions. I think women should be encouraged to apply for senior positions, she told a committee of senior parliamentary lawmakers.
It will be important to take the decision as to who is the right person to be the governor of the Bank of England, but I would encourage applications from female applicants, May who started her career at the Bank said.
Speaking separately, the Banks top oversight official said the next governor should be the best person for the job regardless of gender, but also said that a female governor would be an event of historical significance.
It will be a brilliant moment for this institution when we appoint our first woman governor and it will be a brilliant moment for the institution when we appoint our first BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) governor, Bradley Fried, chairman of the BoEs Court, told the Treasury Committee.
Carney, a Canadian, became the first foreign governor in the Banks three-century history when he took up his role on 1 July, 2013. He is due to step down on 31 January next year.
Many of the people expected to be front-runners to replace him are male, including former BoE deputy governor Andrew Bailey who is now chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority, a markets regulator, and current top BoE officials such as deputy governor Ben Broadbent and chief economist Andy Haldane.

Congratulations have poured in from around the world following the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussexs son.
The newborn was delivered at 05:26 BST on Monday, with Prince Harry saying the baby boy was absolutely to-die-for.
the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were delighted and looking forward to meeting him.
Meghans mother, Doria Ragland, was said to be overjoyed, while former US First Lady Michelle Obama said she and Barack were thrilled.
The baby, who has not been named yet, is seventh in line to the throne, behind the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and his children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis and Prince Harry.
Speaking after the birth, Harry said he planned to make an announcement in two days time so everyone can see the baby.
He said Meghan and the baby were doing incredibly well, adding that they were still thinking about names for the infant.
Arthur a traditional royal name that is among the middle names of the babys grandfather, the Prince of Wales, and his uncle the Duke of Cambridge is the favourite with many of the bookies, while Alexander and James are also popular.
Buckingham Palace said the baby weighed 7lbs 3oz (3.2kg), and that the duke was present for the birth.
In a statement the Palace said that the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were all delighted with the news.
It added that Meghans mother was overjoyed at the arrival of her first grandchild and was with her daughter at Frogmore Cottage the Sussexes home on the Windsor Estate.
Prime Minister Theresa May, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Scotlands First Minister Nicola Sturgeon were among the politicians to offer their congratulations to the royal couple on Twitter.
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who married the couple in May last year, said: May God bless the new family with love, health and happiness.
Congratulations also came from celebrities and famous figures in the United States, where Meghan was born.
Patrick J Adams, who starred alongside Meghan in the US legal drama Suits, wrote on Twitter: Just heard that the world just got heavier by 7 pounds and 3 ounces. Much love to him and his incredible parents.
The baby is a dual citizen, having automatically acquired US citizenship, via Meghan, at birth.
from his home in Mexico, Meghans father, Thomas Markle, said he was proud his grandson was born into the British royal family and he was sure that he would grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honour.
Meanwhile New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said a donation will be made to a group which prepares baby boxes for families in need, and 10 native trees will be planted in New Zealand in honour of the royal baby.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison also sent his huge congratulations to the couple.

Australia is headed for a bad flu season after a surge in cases in summer and autumn.
Experts predict about 4000 people will die from complications due to influenza this year as the number of infections increase again following a quiet 2018.
There have already been 40,000 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza in 2019, almost three times the number recorded at the same time in recent years.
Experts from the Immunisation Coalition have urged people to get vaccinated now so they are protected during the winter flu peak.
What we are really concerned about is that these very large numbers dont continue on through winter, medical virologist Professor William Rawlinson said today.
He said the number of flu cases could end up being the highest since 2017, when a quarter of a million laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded.
The 2017 influenza season was the worst since the 2009 swine flu pandemic.
Last year there were 58,570 confirmed influenza cases in Australia, although the laboratory numbers do not show the full extent of the flu because most people do not get tested.
Prof Rawlinson predicted about two million people will get the flu this year, as typically occurred in a busy influenza year.
Its likely this will be the highest number since 2017 although Id be very concerned that it may be higher because we havent seen so much in 2018.
Immunisation Coalition chairman Professor Robert Booy said there has been a sustained and rising summer and autumn surge that is continuing to increase.
The best explanation is that 2018 was so quiet that we have reduced community immunity, so there are more people who are vulnerable to catching infection and therefore transmitting infection, he said.
While the latest ABS statistics showed 1200 people died due to influenza in 2017, Prof Booy said modelling showed the actual number of deaths on average each season was about 3000 to 4000.
The Immunisation Coalition expects about 4000 deaths this year.
Im not saying were getting more deaths this year than any other year, Prof Booy said.
Weve got a very busy early season but its nothing like the peak that we had in 2017.
He urged people to get vaccinated to protect themselves as well as more vulnerable people such as those with impaired immunity, chronic medical conditions, indigenous Australians, young children and the elderly.

A group of indigenous Gbagi people of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),Abuja, on Tuesday disrupted traffic on the Umar Musa Yardua Way to protest against the Federal Government.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protesters blocked the highway for about an hour causing gridlock.
Some air travellers who were rushing to catch their flights at the airport were frustrated by the development.
Although, the protesters had opened the road before NAN arrived the spot but one of the protesters, Fred Ekeng, said that the protest was to drive home their demand for recognition as indigenous people.
Ekeng said the protest was to tell government that the people should be given their proper place in the territory.
According to him, the people are saying no to ceaseless taking over of their land.
We came here to express our displeasure with the way the government and the military are ceasing our lands without compensation and treating us like second class citizens in our own land.
We are saying that henceforth, the position of the Minister of FCT should be held by an indigene instead of an outsider.
We also want the government to treat us with respect because they keep taking over our lands and pushing us into the interiors without proper compensation, he said.

The scholarship is part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project: The African Diaspora and Pentecostalism in Australia: New Perspectives on Materiality, Media and Religion.
This project investigates the new African Diaspora in Australia and its embrace of Pentecostalism, particularly after arrival. The African community in Australia has often been associated with poor settlement outcomes, and has also been on the receiving end of a racialised moral panic. The project aims: to understand the range of challenges African-Australian communities faces; to determine why so many of their members join Pentecostal churches; to investigate how Pentecostal churches support these communities translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging, and; to contribute to policy efforts to improve outcomes for African new arrivals in Australia.
Within this larger project, the PhD candidates will conduct ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia, and with African Diasporas in the country.
