The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) has established The Prince of Wales Global Sustainability Fellowship Programme with an ambition to unlock the potential of the University to partner with business, government and finance institutions on real-world challenges and opportunities that must be addressed in order to build a sustainable economy.

The Programme aims to foster new cross-disciplinary thinking on sustainability, leading to practical insights, tools and recommendations for decision-makers to carry into their organisations alongside important advances in fundamental knowledge. From 2020 the Programme will be based atCISLs new premises; a low carbon retrofitted building in the centre of Cambridge, which will serve asa vibrant, collaborative atmosphere for transdisciplinary research, education and industry and policy engagement.

Working in close association with academic departments and Cambridge colleges, the Programme will attract outstanding candidates to undertake transdisciplinary research into themes such as health, social inclusion, industrial transformation, natural capital, sustainable finance, future cities and leadership for sustainability.

• • Industrial transformation:How will industries, jobs and markets evolve in future decades in response to global challenges, and how should public policy act with business to smooth this path and ensure economic development is inclusive and sustainable?

• Health:How can companies become agents of improved wellbeing in low-income countries through preventing the causes of ill-health?
• Leadership:How can companies shape the economy to deliver positive sustainability outcomes, while at the same time ensuring successful and resilient organisations?

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be committed to the values that underpin CISLs work and, our Fellows will be expected to have the following attributes:

• PhD or equivalent in a relevant area;
• Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge to design and execute research of a high standard;
• The skills and experience to work independently and manage own workload with limited oversight, while also seeking to foster fruitful collaborations;
• The ability to continually update knowledge in the specialist area and engage in continuous professional development;
• Sufficient project management skills and experience to oversee a substantial research project, including financial management, establishing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, reporting and overseeing more junior staff, as required;
• Significant experience, results, and recognition in cutting-edge research;
• The creativity and initiative to develop a new project and the intellectual energy and independent thinking necessary to deliver the research;
• Strong publication record in major international journals, including first-author publication in a relevant area;
• Well-developed communication skills and the ability to discuss and present research findings orally and in writing to a wide range of audiences.
• Experience of primary data collection, data management and cleaning and of designing and running quantitative and qualitative analyses.
• Clear enthusiasm for engaging flexibly and responsively to opportunities for impact.

Method of Application

This exciting new Programme offers Fellows the opportunity to develop and lead research projects of relevance to one of the defined topics. Fellows may have the opportunity to enhance their impact by teaching on CISLs executive and graduate programmes, and/or supervising students studying for the Masters in Sustainability Leadership and other CISL graduate programmes.

The latter may involve simple measures such as minor changes in leadership. In other cases, adequate control may result in setting new goals, formulating new plans, changing the organizational structure, improving staffing and making major changes in techniques of leading.

It is important to bear in mind that controlling involves much more than mere measurement of deviations from plans. True control implies that corrective action can and will be back on course. It is thus to a great extent, the function that closes the loop in the system of management.

What is the Basic Control Process
Control techniques and systems are essentially the same for cash, office procedures, morale, product quality, or anything else. The basic control process, wherever it is found and whatever it controls, involves three steps:-

• Establishing Standards

• Measuring performance against these standards

• Correcting deviations from standards and plans

Because plans are the yardstick against which controls must be devised, it follows logically that the first step in the control process would be to establish plans. However, since plans vary in detail and complexity and since manager cannot usually watch everything, special standards are established.

Standards are by definition simply criteria for performance. They are selected points in the entire planning programe where measures of performance are made so as to give managers signals as to how things are going without having to watch every step in the execution of plans.

The police have confirmed the release of the Chairman, board of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Mohammad Mahmood Abubakar and his daughter, Yasmin.

The Police made the confirmation in a post on Twitter and also claimed the arrest of a suspect, who was in possession of an AK47 Rifle.

This is to bring to the knowledge of all Nigerians that Dr Mohammed Mahmoud Abubakar, the Chairman of UBEC and his daughter, Yesmin Mohammed who were kidnapped yesterday along Abuja-KADUNA expressway have been released.

Mahmood and his daughter were kidnapped on Monday along Kaduna-Abuja expressway at about 3.30 pm..

An aide of Mahmood, Hussain Danladi, had earlier confirmed the release on Tuesday.

Danladi told some online news platform that no ransom was paid for their release.

But an audio recording published by Daily Trust suggested otherwise.

According to details of the audioa phone conversation between Abubakar and a relation identified as Saleh, N13million was raised to be paid as ransom.

Abubakar said in the conversation: Saleh, please be hurry, time is not on our side It would take some time before we decide on the collection point, and we have planned to resolve this issue within one hour.

Let them go anywhere and get the money within one hour.

But Saleh responded that they were able to raise N13 million and if the kidnappers demanded the money in Dollars, they would have given the ransom money to them.

Saleh said: We are on it and we were able to raise N13 million. The challenge we are having now is night and somebody told me if it would reach in the morning, he would give us N50 million and if they demanded the money in dollars, we would give them this night.

The UBEC Chairman then said that the kidnappers were taking good care of them even though his daughter was wounded on her leg during the operation.

He said, I understand, but if you can get it (money), then go and get it anywhere. We dont want it to pass one hour, these people are taking good care of us, Yasmin was wounded on her leg, but they are assisting her. Please go anywhere and get the money.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday reiterated that no part of the country, regardless of its geographical location or political leaning, would suffer neglect during his administration.

Buhari disclosed this at the inauguration and handing over of Erosion/Flood Control and Road Improvement projects at the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa.

The President, who was represented by the Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, said that the project was one of the ecological intervention programmes approved for the first quarter of 2018.

He added that it was approved by the Federal Executive Council on August 8, 2018, with a completion period of six months.

It was fully completed in March 2019. The project is expected to check flooding menace within the university campus, he said.

The President said that the completion of the project has also underscored the Federal Governments concerted effort and sincerity of purpose in tackling environmental problems in the country.

Todays project inauguration and handing over must be commended as it will offer the community an opportunity to take ownership of the project in order to ensure its care, maintenance and stability.

I, therefore, call on the benefiting community to see the projects as yours, jealously guard it and prevent dumping of refuse in the constructed drainage channels, he said.

In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Fatima Batul-Muktar, said that provision of infrastructure such as roads and drainage network was critical to the development of tertiary institutions.

Federal University Dutse has had problem of road and drainages within its permanent site since establishment in 2011.

Movement of pedestrians and motorists within the permanent site which constitutes ninety per cent land area of the university was a nightmare, especially during rainy season.

Relief however came in August 2018 through the Ecological Fund Office with the award of contract for erosion/flood control and road improvement works in the university, she said.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Hassan Ibrahim, promised that the state is always ready to assist the university whenever the need arises

He lauded the Federal Government for the gesture and contractors, CONTECH Engineering Ltd., for timely completion of the project.
