Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has declared one Mrs. Amaka Okoro, who tested positive for coronavirus disease, wanted for treatment.

He announced this on Thursday, during a media briefing in Benin to update the state on the progress made so far to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

According to the Governor, the COVID-19 patient is a nursing mother, who has a baby that is already coughing.

“She lives at 2 Atoe Idubor Str, off 2nd Ugbor, Benin City. She has been unreachable since her results returned positive.” he said.

Meanwhile, Obaseki has extended the dusk-to dawn curfew imposed in the state to check the spread of coronavirus disease for another 14 days.

He, however, made an hour upward review of the curfew from 8pm to 6am.

“Since my last public update about 10 days ago, I am here to inform you that we have made tremendous progress in the area of screening, testing and improved awareness of our citizens about the virus.

“We are working closely with public and private hospitals, we have screened about 20,000 people and tested 297 citizens.

“This increased screening and testing is the reason for the increased number of cases in the state.

“We are aggressively pushing to screen our minimum target of about 500,000 people and test about one percent of them which is about 5,000, in the next few weeks.

“As we increase testing, we are likely to see an astronomic rise in the number of cases in the state.

“Of the 20,000 people, we have screened and of the 297 samples taken, we have recorded 37 confirmed cases as at today, discharged eight and lost three people.

“It is worthy of note that late testing was a strong factor leading to fatality. That is why I’m advising that everybody go out for screening at the numerous screening centres in the state,” he said.

Obaseki noted that the various screening centres offers free medical services, free face mask and free multivitamins .

“I’m confident that we can beat this virus if we follow the measures put in place strictly.

“I want to appreciate the good people of the state for their cooperation and compliance with the curfew which l imposed 10 day ago.

“I know that the curfew has created inconveniences and loss of income to many families. However, this is the sacrifice we have to make to protect the citizens and their families.

“We have decided to commence another round of palliative distribution to the vulnerable groups in our communities.

“With the lessons we have learnt in the past, we have put measures in place to make sure that only the targeted people receives these items,” he added.

Paris Saint-Germain(PSG) were crowned Ligue 1 champions, for the ninth time, on Thursday as France’s football league declared the season.

PSG led the table by 12 points from Marseille when the season was suspended in mid-March because of the coronavirus outbreak, which has gone on to kill more than 24,000 people in France.

The announcement by the LFP comes after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said on Tuesday that “professional sports leagues, notably football, cannot restart” because of the risks linked to the pandemic.

“There is no ambiguity about this declaration. We needed to make a final decision about this season.

“We acknowledge that the 2019-20 season is over,” said LFP president Nathalie Boy de la Tour, in a conference call with reporters.

Ruling out any possibility of following the lead of the Netherlands, who decided to void their season without a champion, relegation or promotion, the LFP said a final table was arranged on the basis of average points per game.

Ten rounds of matches remained when the campaign was halted, although PSG and Strasbourg both had a game in hand.

As a result, Marseille and Rennes will go into the Champions League next season, while fourth-placed Lille will play in the Europa League.

Toulouse and Amiens, the bottom two, are condemned to relegation, with Lorient and Lens coming up from Ligue 2.

The identity of the other European representatives depends on whether the finals of the two domestic cups are ever played.

Large gatherings of people remain banned in France until September.

However, if the French government and UEFA accept, both cup finals could yet be staged in August with European places still up for grabs.

PSG were due to play Lyon in the League Cup final and Saint-Etienne in the French Cup final. If the games are played, Lyon and Saint-Etienne would qualify for the Europa League by winning.

Lyon — seventh in the table when the season was stopped — would otherwise miss out on European qualification for the first time in over two decades.

Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has appointed as coronavirus ambassador, Femi Adeoye, the man who publicly reprimanded his son who travelled to Lagos despite his warning not to embark on the trip.

The video of Mr Adeoye refusing to cover up for his son over fear of contracting and spreading COVID-19 in Ekiti State went viral after it was shot days ago.

Adeoye said in the video that he would not take the young man home because his house had no space where his son could isolate himself.

He urged the authorities to take charge and keep his son under close observation.

    — Global Times Nigeria

However, Mr Fayemi met Adeoye on Thursday and commended him for the action as the state battles to contain the ravaging disease.

A Twitter thread by the government read: “Governor Kayode Fayemi @kfayemi has appointed Mr. Adeoye as a COVID-19 Response Ambassador in Ekiti State. He will help to propagate the message as a member of the COVID-19 Task Force @Ekiti_COVID19 in the State.

“By, in accordance with existing regulations, denying his son entry into his household having travelled from places under Federal lockdown against his fatherly advice, Mr. Adeoye has proved to be a worthy ambassador of Ekiti State resolve to end the #COVID19 pandemic.

“The Government and the good people of Ekiti State are very proud of this chivalrous act of courage and principle which are the hallmarks of the Ekiti person.

“Mr. Adeoye represents the kind of self-discipline, selflessness, and sense of collective responsibility that Ekiti State and Nigeria need desperately today to progress.

“Ekiti State will in future recognise Mr. Adeoye’s valour as an example of the rebirth of Ekiti Values Orientation which is the central focus of Governor Kayode Fayemi’s @kfayemi administration.”

Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Government on Wednesday ordered the suspension of a security officer who recorded the video.

The security officer, while recording the video, made fun of Adeoye, urging him to go home with his son, after he claimed the young man had been tested and certified free of COVID-19.

The officer was suspended for “incompetence and highhandedness” as the man’s temperature was only checked with a thermometer.

    1. Fellow Nigerians

    2. I will start by commending you all for the resilience and patriotism that you have shown in our collective fight against the biggest health challenge of our generation.

    3. As at yesterday, 26th April 2020, some three million confirmed cases of COVID nineteen have been recorded globally with about nine hundred thousand recoveries. Unfortunately, some two hundred thousand people have also diedpassed away as a result of this pandemic.

    4. The health systems and economies of many nations continue to struggle as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

    5. Nigeria continues to adopt and adapt to these new global realities on a daily basis. This evening, I will present the facts as they are and explain our plans for the coming month knowing fully aware that some key variables and assumptions may change in the coming days or weeks.

    6. Exactly two weeks ago, there were three hundred and twenty three confirmed cases in 20 States and the Federal Capital Territory.

    7. As at this morning, Nigeria has recorded one thousand two hundred and seventy-three cases across 32 States and the FCT. Unfortunately, these cases includes 40 deaths fatalities.

    8. I will use this opportunity to express our deepest condolences to the families of all Nigerians that have lost their lives loved ones as a result of the COVID nineteen Pandemic. This is our collective loss and we share in your grief.

    9. Initial models predicted that Nigeria will record an estimated two thousand confirmed cases in the first month after the index case.

    10. This means that despite the drastic increase in the number of confirmed cases recorded in the past two weeks, the measures we have put in place thus far have yielded positive outcomes against the projections.

    11. The proportion of cases imported from other countries has reduced to only 19% of new cases, showing that our border closures yielded positive results. . These are mostly fellow Nigerians returning through our land borders. We will continue to enforce land border arrival protocols as part of the containment strategy.

    12. Today, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has accredited 15 laboratories across the country with an aggregate capacity to undertake 2,500 tests per day across the country.

    13. Based on your feedback, Lagos the State Government and the FCT with support from NCDC is have established several sample collection centers in Lagos and the FCT. They are also reviewing their laboratory testing strategy to further increase the number of tests they can perform including the accreditation of selected private laboratories that meet the accreditation criteria.

    14. Several new fully equipped treatment and isolation centres have been operationalised across the country thereby increasing bed capacity to about three thousand. At this point, I will commend the State Governors for the activation of State-level Emergency Operation Centres, establishment of new treatment centres and the delivery of aggressive risk communication strategies.

    15. Over ten thousand healthcare workers have been trained. For their protection, additional personal protective equipment have been distributed to all the states. Although we have experienced logistical challenges, we remain committed to establish a solid supply chain process to ensure these heroic professionals are can work safely and are properly equipped.

    16. In keeping with our Government’s promise to improve the welfare of healthcare workers, we have signed a memorandum of understanding on the provision of hazard allowances and other incentives with key health sector professional associations. We have also procured insurance cover for five thousand front line health workers. At this point, I must commend the insurance sector for their support in achieving this within a short period of time.

    17. Nigeria has also continued to receive support from the international community, multilateral agencies, the private sector and public-spirited individuals. This support has ensured that critical lifesaving equipment and materials, which have become scarce globally, are available for Nigeria through original equipment manufacturers and government-to-government processes.

    18. The distribution and expansion of palliatives which I directed in my earlier broadcast is still on going in a transparent manner. I am mindful of the seeming frustration being faced by expectant citizens. I urge all potential beneficiaries to exercise patience as we continue to fine tune our logistical and distribution processes working with the State Governments.

    19. I have directed the Central Bank of Nigeria and other financial institutions to make further plans and provisions for financial stimulus packages for small and medium scale enterprises. We recognize the critical role that they play in Nigeria’s economy.

    20. Our Security Agencies continue to rise to the challenge posed by this unusual situation. While we feel deeply concerned about isolated security incidents involving hoodlums and miscreants, I want to assure all Nigerians that your safety and security remains our primary concern especially in these exceedingly difficult and uncertain times. As we focus on protecting lives and properties, we will not tolerate any human rights abuses by our security agencies. The few reported incidences are regrettableregrettable, and I want to assure you that the culprits will be brought to justice.

    21. I urge all Nigerians to continue to cooperate and show understanding whenever they encounter security agents. Furthermore, for their protection, I have instructed the personnel of the security agencies be provided with the necessary personal protective equipment for their own protection.

    22. As we continue to streamline our response in the epicenters of Lagos and the FCT, I remain am concerned about the unfortunate developments in Kano in recent days. Although an in-depth investigation is still ongoing, we have decided to deploy additional Federal Government human, material and technical resources to strengthen and support the State Government’s efforts. We will commence implementation immediately.

    23. In Kano, and indeed many of other States that are recording new cases, preliminary findings show that such cases are mostly from interstate travel and emerging community transmission.

    24. Drawing from these, I implore all Nigerians to continue to adhere strictly to the advisories published by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. These include rRegular hand washing, social physical distancing, wearing of face masks/coverings in public, avoidance of non-essential movement and travels and avoidance of large gatherings remain paramount.

    25. Fellow Nigerians, for the past four weeks, most parts of our country have been under either Federal Government or State Government lockdowns. As I mentioned earlier, these steps were necessary and overall, have contributed to slowing down the spread of COVID nineteen in Nigeria.

    26. However, such lock downs have also coame at a very heavy economic cost. Many of our citizens have lost their means of livelihoods. Many businesses have also shut down. No country can afford the full impact of a sustained lockdown while awaiting the development of vaccines or cures.

    27. In my last address, I mentioned the Federal Government will develop strategies and policies that will protect lives while preserving livelihoods.

    28. In these two weeks, the Federal and State Governments have jointly and collaboratively worked hard on thishow to balance the need to protect health while also preserving livelihoods, leveraging global best practice while keeping in mind our peculiar circumstances.

    29. We looked atassessed how our factories, markets, traders and transporters can continue to function while at the same time respecting adhering to the NCDC guidelines on hygiene and social distancing.

    30. We assessed how our children can continue to learn without compromising their health.

    31. We reviewed how our farmers can safely plant and harvest in this rainy season to ensure our food security is not compromised. Furthermore, we also discussed how to safely transport food items from rural production areas to industrial processing zones and ultimately, to the key consumption centers.

    32. Our goal was to develop implementable policies that will ensure our economy continues to function with while still maintaining our aggressive response to the COVID nineteen pandemic. These same difficult decisions are being faced by leaders around the world.

    33. Based on the above and in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on COVID nineteen, the various Federal Government committees that have reviewed socio-economic matters and the Nigeria Governors Forum, I have approved for a phased and gradual easing of lockdown measures in FCT, Lagos and Ogun States effective from Saturday, 2nd May, 2020 at 9am.

    34. However, this will be followed strictly with aggressive reinforcement of testing and contact tracing measures while allowing the restoration of some economic and business activities in certain sectors.

    35. The highlights of the new nationwide measures are as follows;

    • Selected businesses and offices can open from 9am to 6pm;

    • There will be an overnight curfew from 8pm to 6am. This means all movements are will be prohibited during this period except essential services;

    • There will be a ban on non-essential inter-state passenger travels until further notice;

    • There will be Partial and controlled interstate movement of goods and services from producers to consumers; and

    • We will strictly ensure the mandatory use of face masks or coverings in public in addition to maintaining physical distancing and personal hygiene. Furthermore, the restrictions of on social and religious gathers shall remain in place. State Governments, corporate organizations and philanthropists are encouraged to support the production of cloth masks for citizens.

    1. For the avoidance of doubt, the lockdown in the FCT, Lagos & Ogun States shall remain in place until these new ones come into effect on Saturday, 2nd May 2020 at 9am.

    2. The Presidential Task Force shall provide sector specific details and timing guidelines to allow for preparations by Governments, businesses and institutions.

    3. The above are guidelines. State Governors may choose to amend adapt and expand based on their unique circumstances provided they maintain alignment with the guidelines issued above on public health and hygiene.

    4. These revised guidelines do will not apply for to Kano State. The total lockdown recently announced by the State Government shall remain enforced be enforced for the full duration. The Federal Government shall deploy all the necessary human, material and technical resources to support the State in controlling and containing the pandemic.

    5. I wish to once again commend the front line workers across the country who, on a daily basis, risk everything to ensure we win this fight. For those who got infected in the line of duty, be rest assured that Government will do all it takes to support you and your families during this exceedingly difficult period. I will also take this opportunity to assure you all that your safety, well being and welfare remains paramount to our Government.

    6. I will also recognize recognize the support we have received from our traditional rulers, the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and other prominent religious and community leaders. Your cooperation and support has significantly contributed to the successes we have recorded to date. I will urge you all to please continue to create awareness on the seriousness of coronavirus among your worshipers and communities while appealing that they strictly comply with public health advisories.

    7. I will also thank the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Presidential Task Force for all their hard work to date. Through this collaboration, I remain confident that success is achievable.

    8. I also wish to thank corporate organizations, philanthropists, the UN family, the European Union, friendly nations, the media and other partners that have taken up the responsibility of supporting our response.

    9. And finally, I will thank all Nigerians again for your patience and cooperation during this difficult and challenging period. I assure you that government shall continue to take all necessary measures to protect the lives and livelihoods our citizens and residents.

    10. I thank you for listening and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Niger State Government has concluded arrangements to repatriate all Almajiri children to their states of origin.

The Secretary to the State Government and Chairman, Niger State Task Force on COVID-19, Ahmed Matane stated this in a statement on Monday in Minna.

SSG Matane said that the decision is in compliance with the Northern Governors’ Forum agreement to evacuate them to their states of origin to curb the spread of COVID-19.

”Evacuation of Almajiri children became necessary considering the unhealthy condition, congestion and filthy environment they were exposed to” he said.

Matane stated that the state government had closed down all formal and informal schools across the state but found out that the existence of Almajiri Schools “is becoming a cog in the wheel of progress.”

He enjoined proprietors of Almajiri schools to cooperate with the state government.

“The exercise will be carried out with vigor until Government is certain that all Almajiri children have been returned to their various States of origin and reunited with their parents,” Matane said.

Former Super Eagles forward and Nigeria’s soccer ambassador, Daniel Amokachi has revealed how all his attempts to get a miracle healing failed despite sleeping at the altar of Prophet T.B Joshua’s Synagogue Church of All Nations for weeks.

Amokachi had flown back to the Lagos-based Synagogue Church of All Nations while attempting to relaunch his career after suffering a protracted knee injury he sustained ahead of the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

“The Bull”, as fondly called, told Brila FM on Friday that he was not healed even though he saw miracles at Synagogue.

According to the former Everton star, “I was at the church on the invitation of a friend who is a member. My friend, at that time, told me about the man of God and that I could meet my miracle if I met with the Pastor.

“At first, I wasn’t giving to it, but I later agreed and flew down to Nigeria from England to see the Pastor.

“I slept by the church’s altar for several weeks to receive healing. I was not healed, but I saw lots of miracles that happened to people.”

His football career more or less ended after he left Turkish aide Beşiktaş in 1999.

He failed medical test after signing with 1860 Munich and the contract was cancelled.

The General Overseer of the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Movement, Pastor Lazarus Muoka, has claimed that Coronavirus will be a forgotten issue if churches are allowed to reopen.

Pastor Lazarus Muoka in a video shared on the church’s official page on Facebook described the decision by world leaders to close down churches as a wrong move.

According to him, God allowed the COVID-19 pandemic to happen so everyone can return to him.

“The devil has taken advantage of Coronavirus and we are looking for a solution elsewhere, instead of returning to the house of the Lord.

“If the world returns to God and enters into a covenant with him, Coronavirus will be crushed within one minute.

“ Coronavirus is God’s wrath against man, and cannot be stopped by the closure of borders, washing of hands, use of vaccines and the wearing of face masks.”

Femi Adesina, spokesman to President Muhammadu Buhari, has recounted how Abba Kyari, the late chief of staff to the president, appeared in his dream the night before he died.

He recalled that in the dream which occurred last Thursday, the late Kyari, who stood waiting for him, “oddly” did not wear his usual ‘flowing Agbada’ and was heavily bearded.

The former chief of staff to the president died last Friday after battling COVID-19.

In his tribute to Kyari on Friday, Adesina said he is not much of a dreamer and made nothing of the one in which Kyari appeared until after his death.

He wrote: “On Thursday night inward Friday, I dreamt. The President and myself were in a corridor in the Presidential Villa, and he was talking with me. Suddenly, by my right, I saw a figure waiting for me to finish with the President.

“It was Mallam Abba, clad in his usual white native attire, with the trademark red cap. But this time, there was no flowing Agbada, which I found rather odd. He never (or rarely) appeared without the flowing robe.

“He was heavily bearded, another surprise, and the beard was all white. I rounded off discussion with the President, and yielded space for the Chief.

“I made nothing of the dream, but after he died, I shared my experience with my friend, Mallam Garba Deen Mohammed. “He came to say goodbye to you, and you didn’t know it,” my friend said.

“I didn’t know till then that Garba Deen had the uncommon gift of interpretation of dreams. Well, I now know where to go the next time I dream.”

He recalled that his last contact with Kyari was on Friday, March 20, when Buhari met with Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, chairman of ECOWAS Commission, at the presidential villa.

“A seat had been designated for me, next to that of the chief of staff. Few minutes later, Mallam Abba (as he was often called by us) walked in. I rose to greet him,” he wrote.

“Femi, how are you? They have said we should not shake hands again,” he responded. Rather jocularly, he extended his right foot. I touched his foot with my own, and we both laughed. Leg-shake, instead of handshake.”

Adesina said they had finished from the meeting and while leaving, he looked back “instinctively” to Kyari and others as they walked behind him.

“Why did I do it? I didn’t know, still don’t know. But it turned out to be my last view of Kyari,” he wrote.

“He was laughing as he talked with the two people beside him. That glance I took turned out to be the very final. About 72 hours later, Mallam Abba was diagnosed with the deadly Coronavirus, which sent him sadly on a journey of no return.
