    0_1582858779864_3-men-allegedly-hypnotise-dupe-Ibadan-high-chief-of-N300m.jpg

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibadan zonal office, has arrested three persons for allegedly duping the Otun-Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun. The suspects – Babatunde Ologunja, Olusola Olaoye Babatunde and Olufemi Lawal – and others still at large were accused of conspiring to dispossess the Ibadan high chief of sums running to about N300m.

Balogun, who is next to the Olubadan in the Olubadan-in-Council hierarchy, was a senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in National Assembly between 1999 and 2003.

His younger brother, Dr Kola Balogun, a current senator, had written a petition to the EFCC as a ‘concerned member of the Aliwo family’, seeking the commission’s intervention in smashing the syndicate and ensuring that members paid for their alleged crimes.

The younger Balogun feared that the high chief may have been charmed by the suspected fraudsters as he was still unable to come to terms with the reality of his situation.

“This request became necessary because we believe strongly that the victim has been hypnotized; he is not in a position to admit it and his health condition is deteriorating,” the senator stated in the petition.

According to the anti-graft agency’s acting spokesman, Tony Orilade, preliminary investigations revealed that for the past four years, the suspects have consistently collected various sums of money from the high chief.

The sums, according to findings, were not attached to any particular project and no receipts were issued to indicate the existence of any genuine transactions between the parties.

As the time of their arrest, the syndicate had allegedly received about N300 million through bank transfers from their victim. Orilade said the commission has designated for possible forfeiture four vehicles and six landed properties traced to their alleged fraudulent activities. He added that the EFCC was still on the trail of their fugitive partners.

Soldiers at the Nigerian Army Brigade, Malam Fatori, Borno State, currently fighting the Boko Haram insurgency were thrown into mourning, on Wednesday.

This is happening as a depressed soldier, who allegedly got information that someone was sleeping with his wife, turned his gun on seven of his colleagues and later shot himself.

There were initially reports that two of those shot have been reported dead, while the rest are in critical condition.

The sad development happened as suspected members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province, ISWAP, abducted Mohammed Abba, head of the Civilian Joint Task Force, JTF, in Bambula community in Chibok Local Council of Borno State.

Narrating how the soldier shot seven of his colleagues and himself, a source said:-

“I couldn’t help but voice this out. At about 6a.m., this morning (Wednesday) at 118/119 BN Malam Fatori, Borno State, a Corporal fired seven soldiers and fired himself.

“Two have been reported dead, while the rest are in critical condition. The soldier has been going through depression as a result of family issues; information got to him that someone has been sleeping with his wife while he is on duty.

“Soldiers in this particular location spend almost one year before being given pass to visit their families. How do you leave a soldier in the war front for nine to 12 months without him seeing his family?

“Some soldiers’ children don’t even know their fathers. Many homes have been shattered and broken.

“The Battalion Commander has refused to comply with directive of the Theatre Command that soldiers should be allowed to go on pass every three months.

Confirming the incident last night, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sagir Musa, said the Corporal serving in Operation Lafiya Dole, Army Super Camp 15, located at Malam Fatori, killed himself, two others and injured three in the process.

“Two of his colleagues were also injured during the incident and are currently in stable condition in our hospital in Maiduguri.

“Efforts are ongoing to contact the families of our gallant colleagues, who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. May their gentle souls rest in peace.

“Meanwhile, investigation into the case has since been instituted to determine the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.”

Sources attributed the action of the Corporal to either depression or poor visibility, as the terrain where the incident occurred was poor in the early hours of the day.

In a post she shared on her IG page, Etinosa stated that there is no relationship between bleaching and the kingdom of God.

She also insinuated that the Pastor’s alleged “side piece” also bleaches. Read here.

The plot to kill Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, by his own men is getting intense.

According to The Nation, the hierarchy of the two terrorist groups, Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), no longer place their trust in Shekau.

The struggle for supremacy among the two major terror groups operating in the North East is also a factor in the race to eliminate Abubakar Shekau.

The source quoted by The Nation, said many of the Boko Haram and ISWAP Commanders have been killed as a result of infighting among the insurgents.

It was also reported that a fresh crisis hit the terrorists’ camps after the extermination of Muhammad Shuwa, Abu – Mossad Albarnawee and Baa Idirisa on February 9, 2020.

The death of these two top commanders, the source said has deepened the suspicion and distrust in Shekau’s camp.

He disclosed further that most of Shakau’s key Commanders and fighters had deserted him and are secretly planning to execute him.

According to the source, “key Commanders under the leadership of Mallam Bakura have been constantly planning to kill Shekau because of his high handedness, erratic disposition, mental imbalance and non-adherence to pristine Islamic tenets or the original BHTs’ doctrine and Ideology.

“They further accused him of serial clandestine killings of some terrorists Commanders that he viewed as threats to his despotic leadership. Also, it was revealed that Shekau has an uncontrollable mad desire for women including his fellow jihadists’ women and daughters”.

All these the source said have “increasingly alienated him from some of the high profile Commanders that are now surreptitiously planning to eliminate him. It is just a matter of time that Shekau will be no more.

The Source added that “the latest information from though yet to be confirmed is that Shekau has been eliminated by his detractors who are averse to his inordinate lust for raping women and under-aged girls including those married to his fellow jihadists fighters. His penchant for the use of girl child for suicide bombings has been a great issue of concern in the terrorists’ camp.

“The major point of disagreement between the two camps lies in what a source described as Anti-Islamic activities and indiscriminate killing of people whether moslem or Christians, children or adults including raping women who are married or unmarried.

“These problems are compounded because of the increasing operational activities of Nigerian troops and the multinational Joint Taskforce in Northern Borno State”.

Another young man attempted to commit suicide on Wednesday night after he alighted from a cab and jumped off the Third Mainland bridge into Lagos lagoon.

According to RRS who shared photos from the scene, the young man who tried to kill himself by jumping into the lagoon, however landed on floating logs of wood beneath the Third Mainland Bridge.

The incident came less than two weeks after a 22-year-old graduate of the Lagos State University, Daibo Toju Davies, alighted from a vehicle and jumped into the Lagos Lagoon.

However, today’s victim was rescued but sustained some injury. He was then rushed to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, where he was later referred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba in Surulere.

The cab driver when interrogated by RRS officials, said he picked the yet-to-be-identified man from Igando, a suburb of Lagos.

He said; “I carried him (the passenger) from Igando and he insisted I pass through the Third Mainland Bridge. On getting to the bridge, he asked me whether this was Third Mainland Bridge and I answered yes. He told me that he was pressed and that I should wait for him to ease himself. I was curious. At this time, he was forcing me to wait. I stylishly drove him to the point where the RRS men were standing inward Lagos. I told him I was no longer interested in the trip before I approached the police officers leaving him inside the car.” the cab driver said.

Nigerian artiste, Iyanya Mbuk, popularly known as Iyanya, was granted bail in the sum of N20 million on Thursday by an Igbosere High Court in Lagos over alleged car theft.

Iyanya, who rose to fame after winning the first season of Project Fame West Africa and best known for his hit single “Kukere”, is facing a count charge of stealing.

The charge was preferred by the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police.

Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile, while granting Iyanya bail, said: “I have perused the affidavit and the counter-affidavit of the parties; there is a prima facie case of criminal conversion against him.

“However, there is nothing to show that the defendant will interfere with the proceedings of this case and nothing to show that he will jump bail if granted.

“Bail is, therefore, granted to the defendant in the sum of N20 million with one surety in like sum”.

She ordered that the surety should have a landed property in Lagos and possess its certificate of occupancy.

She also ordered that the bail should be perfected within the next seven days “otherwise the bail shall be revoked”.

The judge adjourned the case until May 27 for trial.

However, counsel to the defendant, Mr D. I. Onyiwara, had filed the bail application supported with a 30-paragraph affidavit and a written address, urging the court to grant him bail, NAN reported.

He argued that the alleged offence was not capital.

Onyiwara said that the charge resulted from a broken-down business transaction.

He added that the defendant would not jump bail.

“The defendant had always submitted himself to the SFU whenever needed,” Onyiwara said.

Prosecution counsel, SP Chukwu Agwu, had filed a 13-paragraph counter-affidavit, urging the court not to grant bail to the defendant.

NAN reports that the police filed the charge against the singer since March 15, 2019.

His arraignment was adjourned six times after the charge marked LD/9024c/2019 was filed, due to his failure to appear before the court.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty on Feb. 4, after Okikiolu-Ighile threatened to invoke the power of the court to ensure his attendance to take his plea.

The SFU alleged that Iyanya dishonestly converted to his personal use or of another person, a black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado jeep marked MAVINIY, with chassis No. JTEBX7FJ7EK165480 and engine No. 2TR1385954.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Health, Professor Akin Abayomi said that the Chinese citizen who presented at the Reddington Hospital, Ikeja yesterday and who was suspected to have Coronavirus has tested negative to the infection.

Abayomi made this known on Thursday morning in Lagos and gave assurance to residents that there was no case of Coronavirus in the state at present.

“I will like to reassure Lagosians that our vigilance levels are very high and we are putting more measures in place to safeguard the state,” he said.

Abayomi, in a statement, explained that the ministry’s attention was drawn to a suspected case of Coronavirus at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja.

“From our investigation, we gathered that a Chinese citizen, who arrived in Nigeria from China seven weeks ago, presented at Reddington Hospital on Wednesday, complaining about fever.

“The hospital in keeping with the advisory we earlier issued correctly maintained a high index of suspicion, isolated the patient and reported the case to the Ministry.

“We took up the case, transferred the patient to the state isolation unit at the Mainland Hospital which is our specialised infectious disease hospital.

“His blood samples were taken to the Virology laboratory for analysis and it came out negative,” the Commissioner said.

Lagos and the Federal Government have been on hyper-alert for the virus, which has infected over 80,000 people worldwide and is on the rage in South Korea, Italy and Iran, outside of the epicentre in Wuhan, Hubei province of China. An estimated 2,744 people have died, mostly in China.

Abayomi appealed to Lagos citizens on Thursday to refrain from posting unverified news about the coronavirus that can cause unnecessary anxiety in the state.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) also said the 11 suspected cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) tested in Nigeria were negative.

Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Director-General of NCDC, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Ihekweazu reassured Nigerians of their safety against COVID-19, following rumours of a confirmed case in Lagos.

He said the tests were conducted by the NCDC National Reference Laboratory and Virology Laboratory at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

“Four laboratories in Nigeria have the capacity to test for the coronavirus. These laboratories are within the NCDC laboratory network and are in contact 24/7. If a new case is confirmed, it will be reported accordingly.

“We are in close communication with the Lagos State Ministry of Health and other states, and will inform the public once there’s a confirmed case in Nigeria,” the director-general said.

Ihekweazu assured Nigerians that the NCDC would continue to closely monitor the outbreak globally.

“We urge Nigerians to disregard rumours and discourage further spread. NCDC will inform the public if a case is reported in Nigeria,” he said.

The NCDC boss said that when a high-risk traveller with symptoms arrive in the country, he/ she would be taken from the airport to an isolation centre and samples would be collected immediately for testing.

“If confirmed, appropriate management will commence but if negative, he/she would still be monitored for 14 days and retested.

“When a high-risk traveller that is not symptomatic comes into the country, the person is advised to stay at home for 14 days and report immediately if he/she develops symptoms.

“Furthermore, his contact details are obtained and an official is attached to him/her to monitor him daily for 14 days to see if he develops symptoms.

“If he develops symptoms within 14 days of arrival in the country, samples would be collected from him for confirmation.

“If confirmed he/she goes into our isolation centre where he would be managed appropriately,” he explained.

An 18-year-old girl, Abosede Idowu has been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend, Aliyu Ibrahim to death.

According to the police, Idowu was arrested following a distress call received from Seriki Hausa in Shagamu that the suspect and her deceased boyfriend were arguing over the sum of N3,000 as a result of which they were dragging a knife with each other and that eventually, the girl used the knife to stab the boyfriend on his chest which resulted to his death.

“On receiving the distress call, the DPO, Shagamu, SP Okiki Agunbiade detailed his detectives to the scene where the suspected teenager was apprehended. The blood stained knife which she used to stab the deceased was also recovered.

“She further stated that it was the deceased who brought out the knife and while dragging it with him, the knife stabbed him on his chest. The corpse of the deceased has been released to his relation on their demand to bury him in accordance with Islamic right,” the police said in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi.

David Lyon and the All Progressives Congress have lost their bids to overturn the Supreme Court ruling of 13 February, which sacked Lyon as the duly elected governor of Bayelsa state.

In a ruling today, the court dismissed the applications for review of the judgment, which rendered Lyon’s election invalid because of what the five-man panel of justices attributed to the alleged certificate forgery committed by Lyon’s running mate,Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo.

According to Justice Amina Augie who read the judgment, the applications lacked merit, adding that the decisions of the court are final, a position that may well foreshadow the outcome of other reviews pending before the apex court.

“There must be an end to litigation. Even if we review this judgment, every disaffected litigant will bring similar applications and the finality of Supreme Court judgments will be lost,” Amina Augie said.

She added that the applicants failed to point out errors in the 13 February judgment.

She then pronounced that the judgment is final for all ages and that no court on earth can review it.

She added that the applications are frivolous and vexatious and awarded the cost of N10 million against the applicants to be personally paid by their counsel.

The Supreme Court panel that heard the review arguments was composed of seven justices, headed by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta.

The panel gave its judgement after listening to the submissions by lawyers.

Legal luminary Afe Babalola represented Lyon and Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, the deputy governor-elect.

Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria, argued that the apex court has the power to set aside its earlier judgment.

He insisted that the application is not for a review of the judgment but to set aside the judgment sacking Mr Lyon who overwhelmingly won the election.

Mr Babalola added that the judgment of the court delivered on February 13, amounts to a denial of fair hearing. He urged the court to reverse its decision.

Chief Wole Olanipekun, another senior advocate, representing the APC asked the apex court to set aside its judgment on the ground that the court had no jurisdiction to have entertained the appeal in the first place.

He explained that the suit was first filed at the Federal High Court as a pre-election matter, which is the foundation of the matter that made the appeal get to the apex court.

Mr Olanipekun, therefore, restated his argument that the apex court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

He added that all humans are fallible so it is not beyond the apex court to make a mistake.

Mr Olanipekun also faulted the interpretation of the judgment of the court by INEC which issued a certificate of return to Senator Douye Diri of the PDP, urging the court to grant the application to set aside its earlier judgment.

Counsel to the PDP, Tayo Oyetibo, also a SAN, argued that the application by David Lyon is an invitation to violate the nation’s constitution.

Monguno and Abba Kyari even shook hands on Wednesday
Major-General Mohammed Babagana Monguno, the National Security Adviser resurfaced Wednesday at the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

Monguno had set off concerns about his status in the administration after he was absent at last week’s FEC meeting and also the meeting on Monday between President Buhari and Service chiefs.

Speculations that his absence may be a fallout over his leaked memo that the President’s Chief of Staff, Malam Abba Kyari, was meddling in his duties, by holding meetings with security chiefs and giving them instructions.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has disbanded the Zonal Intervention Squad in Ogun following the death of a Remo Stars FC defender, Kazeem Tiyamiu.

Represented by a Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Peter Ogunyonwo, the IGP disclosed this when he accompanied Governor Dapo Abiodun on a visit to the parents of the deceased on Tuesday in Sagamu.

He added that their offices have also been handed over to the State Police Command.

The DIG said the death of Kazeem would prompt the police to carry out more reforms, insisting that the officers involved, who have since been arrested, were on illegal duty and did not obtain clearance from the police formation in Sagamu before the operation.

Police officers from the ZIS unit in Abeokuta had arrested the footballer and allegedly pushed him to his death on February 22.

Ogunyonwo, however, pledged that a full investigation would be carried out to bring those involved to justice, adding that the police would do everything possible to purge itself of “trigger-happy elements”.

Abiodun, in his remarks, appealed to the people of Sagamu to eschew violence and not give criminals opportunity to perpetrate their acts.

He promised to use every instrument of government available to unearth the circumstances surrounding the killing and the crisis caused in the town.

“We will use every means possible, not only to ensure that justice is served, but that it is seen to have been served. We’ll ensure that this will be the last of such avoidable deaths in the hands of security officers in our state,” he said.

Others who accompanied the governor were the Commissioner of Police in Ogun, Kenneth Ebrimson, and the State Director of the Department of State Services, David Tuska.
